Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf on Sunday signed a bill legalizing medical marijuana, making the state the 24th in the country to authorize a comprehensive medical marijuana program.

The “truly historic legislation,” the governor said, gives patients with serious medical conditions access to medical marijuana with a physician’s certification at designated state dispensaries to alleviate pain. The law also sets standards for tracking plants, certifying physicians and licensing growers, dispensaries and physicians, according to the Associated Press. Patients can take the drug in pill, oil, vapor, ointment or liquid form.

“The signing of this bill, which will improve the quality of life for patients and their families throughout Pennsylvania, shows that Harrisburg can come together to address big challenges on behalf of the people of the commonwealth,” Wolf said in a statement.
