Acquisitions were Apple directed, part of Project Onyx and Project Cascade.

They were intended to support research that Apple had GTAT doing in addition to the Big Boule. This research was on manufacturing methods to bring APPLE PATENTS to market. This is why selling those techs when significant progress had been made for pennies on the dollar is fraudulent conveyance and will result in unjust enrichment at the expense of GTAT shareholders.

All of that tech will make it back to Apple's supply line in the not too distant future.
