Re: Replacement for Dusty

Among the candidates speculated to replace Baker, if he is fired, are former managers Lou Piniella, Tom Kelly, Jimy Williams, Gene Lamont and Braves third base coach Fredi Gonzalez.

This whole thing was discussed at some length by a couple of talking heads on "Mike & Mike" this morning. The only two of the above names that were specifically mentioned were Piniella and Kelly. The general concensus was that Kelly is enjoying his retirement and doesn't want to manage anywhere again; and that Piniella is more likely to end up managing the Yankees next year after Torre gets fired when the Yankees miss the playoffs. The name I haven't heard, but was expecting to, is Bob Brenly. First of all, he's already on the Tribune Company's payroll, so they could hang the "interim" tag on him for the rest of this season and see who else might pop up on the radar screen over the winter. And secondly, he's already done something Dusty has never done...win a World Series.
