ANAVEX 2-73 releases a secret weapon when metabolized by the body: ANAVEX 19-144.

I was reviewing the preclinical data on ANAVEX 2-73 and ANAVEX 1-41 more closely and came across something I hadn't noticed before: ANAVEX 2-73 is both an active drug and pro-drug for ANAVEX 19-144, which is also active. I had always wondered why much of the company's early focus was on ANAVEX 1-41, but then it was ANAVEX 2-73 that jumped out of the lab and into the clinic. This is probably why.

From the original PR dated July 26, 2011:

ANAVEX 2-73 is not only active in and of itself, but is also a pro-drug. Its only metabolite, ANAVEX 19-144, is also active in these animal models. The metabolite of ANAVEX 1-41, ANAVEX 2-140, does not display such activity.

This could be an incredibly important aspect of ANAVEX 2-73's efficacy. In a Alzheimer's field strewn with single-stage rockets failing to reach orbit, ANAVEX 2-73 is a multi-stage rocket that will hopefully reach orbit around an effective treatment for this dreadful disease.
