It could have been an innocent question about profitability but sometimes these kinds of questions get thrown in to cause confusion about what actually gets reported. We know that profitability will not be this quarter, as you say. But if enough questions about it get raised, and then the company reports a loss as expected, even if the numbers were better than expected, some people will look at it and say, why didn't they report a profit like some predicted and make what may actually be a good report seem like something not so good. It also happens when analysts get too excited about a company and drive up expectations too much prior to earnings and makes what is reported seem disappointing instead of being the good report that it should have been.
