You know this, butt worth a post for others who don't understand the workload demands and stress:

In my first gig, we had a room with a couple of futons and no windows - in a quiet area, so you could catch a nap during all-nighters or as needed during the day. It was used a fair amount. Same reason you have free drycleaning service pickup and delivery at the office. And services like Waiters On Wheels, and now Fresh Diet and Seamless.

I feel sorry for the kids today with text messaging, cell phones, and always-on email with smartphones and web access. I remember when pagers/beepers came along and I had to carry that albatross around - still have it in a souvenir box - an old Motorola with the smoked transparent plastic case w/ belt/pocket clip.

Karoshi has come to America.

I wonder what is was like in the old 'old days' before telephones or telegraphs - business got done with letters. Not many nights of lost sleep or need for Bolivian Marching Powder or highly caffeinated brains running on empty.

Flip side: I wonder how much worse it will get in the future. Surely this is nott the end of the time-compression efficiency competition. Now with videoconferencing on notebooks and smartphones (Skype, GoToMeeting, WebEx) one needs to look presentable 24/7 for the spontaneous 'need' for a videocon. If it's available, of course somebody will think it MUST be used.

Humans are nott designed to live in this technology zone.

Regards,

Karoshi-san
