Flobewon, Took your advice, used patience (aided by some gin and tonic) and my update did finally finish. However still had problems getting defender to run, sometimes it would come on and then stop later. I think I may have found the cause. I also had IObit malware fighter running and since I disabled it in the startup menu, I have had no problems with defender. Evidently, IObit malware fighter and defender don't get along. Fingers crossed it stays that way.
