appreciation
by the way, i have a new found appreciation for the yankees. make no mistake, i will always loathe them for the financial advantage they have - but i learned something this weekend. as i've noted here, last season was the first season i ever had a team in my home town, a team to call my own. as a result i'd never before witnessed, the yankees coming to town - and what that means.
what does it mean?
it means, everything. i and the nationals and the rest of their fans know they are not going to the post-season this year, so this weekend "is" the national's post-season. biggest crowds since baseball came back to DC, (including the first game last season - the first game in 30+ years at RFK) and a playoff type atmoshpere. i imagine every team and every city gets-up for the yankees in the same fashion, making what the yankees accomplish year-in-year-out something that should be noted and appreciated. sure they have a payroll nearly four times that of "my" nationals that allows them to field an all-star team, but that they win 90-110 games every season when every team plays them like it is a barometer for their entire season? well, it doesn't help me like them them any more - but it does give me a greater appreciation for what they accomplish. okay, off to the rubber-match.....
