...we'll see some sort of open source push at a consumer friendly GUI for it? Or will a major vendor step up with deep pockets and take it on? The standing interfaces look a bit like Windows 95 or earlier. Or will the "free" aspect always supercede "ease of use" for sales?

Perhaps more troubling will be when computers truly fragment into specialized devices, eliminating the need for the all encompassing desktop/laptop model, and where providing an overarching user interface is not such a mammoth task. Successful devices will still likely be the best combinations of fit between features, price and interface, but as it stands Apple rarely offers the price aspect that large marketshare seems to go hand-in-hand with. I guess iPod was the rare example where its best of breed features made it the leader, but it's to be seen if they can repeat.
