Complaint filed against Petaquilla Gold

Minister of Environment Mirei Endara filed a criminal complaint today for environmental crimes against the company Petaquilla Gold and its legal representative, Richard Fifer.

Endara explained that the project has been abandoned since 2013, forcing the state to implement actions to mitigate environmental damage. She added that some $30 million are required to cope with this process. Recently, at a Cabinet Council meeting, the minister requested a $2.5 million loan to pump water from retaining ponds at the site and to perform other tasks.

The official explained that one of the main problems at the site are the accumulation of potentially dangerous tailings, which could result in widespread pollution.

She said that the project was abandoned without executing a closing plan.

Company representatives have said that there is no danger of contamination
