Layer Structure

In 1990, Sony (Japan) introduced the lithium-ion battery. Sony uses LiCoO2 as cathode material. This material is expensive, uncertain and their use for some military applications has been set. A considerable investment in this battery technology that utilizes LiCoO2 made with an operating voltage range of 4.2 to 2.75V. However, during operation at high temperature LiCoO2 shows produced an exothermic reaction that eventually lead-free oxygen and may cause a fire hazard.

Another promising material is LiNiO2. However, the phase pure oxide is difficult to produce, resulting in poor or low capacity around 140-150 mAh / g It also provides space reduction due to the formation of NiO2 during storage and removal of lithium ions. Toxicity and high costs are additional subjects for cobalt-and nickel-based oxides layers.

New LiMn1/3Co1/3Ni1/3O2 layer structure is used in lithium-ion Batteries because of the safety and are non-toxic. The disadvantage is that the structure is destroyed once ejected from the cathode material below 2.5 V. The cost of the material is also higher than LiCoO2 due to the difficulties of process control.
