In this example the person on stage communicates directly with the audience (one to many). An extension of that example would have everyone in the audience communicating back to the person on stage at the same time and he could hear every word of every person and understand it all (one to many, and many to one). And a further extension would be every person heard every other word and understood them all as well (many to many).

Do you know where the hardware and software are today relative to this analogy? I get the impression that all-optical hardware are around 1024 simultaneous (many to many) connections.
