Woody Guthrie and tears of joy

Before I head to bed tonight, I'll probably have a few more moments to reflect on the fact that tonight I had a chance to listen to some Woody Guthrie songs that had never been recorded in the 50+ years since they were written, their original tunes lost forever with Woody himself, until a couple artists of this musical generation were approached by his daughter with the idea of recording them with music they could compose themselves. And they did. And some of it is really, really beautiful music. And tomorrow I'll listen some more. Probably a lot more.

And so, the craft of one of this nation's greatest writers is preserved for a new audience, though not too many people will ever hear it, because radio is the way it is.

The birds are singing in your eyes today
Sweet flowers blossom in your smile
The wind and sun are in the words you say
Where might your lonesome lover be?

Birds may be singing in my eyes this day
Sweet flowers blossom when I smile
But my soul is stormy and my heart blows wild
My sweetheart rides a ship on the sea

- Woody Guthrie
