Substitute coppoer for SOI and that quote's just about identical to all the flatulence we heard from the Intel apologists in 1999 - just before the freight train of Athlon on copper ground them into the dirt.

Intel wasn't back to being competitive until it got a copper process on line.

Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it, and Intel is singing the same old tune "copper's too hard, we don't need it" with a slightly different turn of phrase, "SOI's too hard, we don't need it", and it looks like they're going to wind up getting the same hammering, at least until they manage to figure out an SOI process of their own.

But this time they may find that world has passed their 32-bit processors by, while IBM foots the bill for FAB capacity to saturate the market with Athlon-64s.
