Another report on Snapdragon 810 overheating. Samsung might ditch it.

New Galaxy S6 Leak Hints At Radical Change Of Direction

Samsung might be about to ditch Qualcomm QCOM +1.71%’s processors for its upcoming Galaxy S6 smartphone, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Qualcomm’s new 810 chip reportedly overheated during Samsung’s tests, which cemented the Korean company’s decision to drop it from its new Galaxy S model.

Instead, Samsung will use its own Exynos chip in its new flagship line – a decision backed by its need to become more self-reliant as it builds a new $15 billion factory. As it stands, Samsung is the world’s second largest chipmaker, just behind Intel INTC -0.91% with 10.5% of market share.

The source claimed that the new flagship handset will house Samsung’s “most advanced” chip.

Qualcomm’s is the dominant technology used in most flagship smartphones including; Motorola, LG, HTC and Sony devices. The new 810 chip that Samsung has reportedly shunned will boast a 30% increase in gaming performance whilst using 20% less power, which is thanks to its 64-bit CPU and new Adreno 430 integrated GPU. 4K recording, and viewing, will also be natively supported as well as 4K streaming to TV.

Bloomberg contacted LG about the potential overheating issue and the Korean firm responded by saying that “there will be no problem with the G Flex 2 phones,” and that it is “taking every measure to ensure there will be no overheating problem.”

As I reported yesterday, HTC is still yet to decide what processor it will go with in its new One M9 that’s scheduled for launch this March, with my source saying that it’s “still to be decided”. Although my source did add it will be “the latest Qualcomm technology”, so it’s likely HTC will stick with the popular chipmaker.
