This appears to be a small contract that may not produce much revenue, but it may have more importance than is immediately obvious. It’s one step beyond prototypes in that a relatively large number of liquidmetal parts will be shipped (maybe not mass-production, but more than one or two items), and they will be going into the marketplace where they will have greater exposure than just a couple of prototypes being seen by some company’s manufacturing engineering staff. Some things that may be of interest to potential users are:
1. Yield - I believe I read once that a major problem with liquidmetal was the die-casting process producing inconsistent results. The low yield of usable parts would certainly eat into profits.
2. The unique properties of injection-molded liquidmetal will be demonstrated to the general public. (at least to the few who can afford these expensive knives) If these things can be used in the field and still retain an edge and the appearance of something right out of the box, people involved in the manufacture of other more profitable products may take notice.
3. The ability of LQMT Technologies to mass produce items of consistent quality will be demonstrated (assuming they have that capability).
4. The profitability of liquidmetal products will be demonstrated (one would hope!)
