Did the Steinbrenner's suddenly have an epiphany or did they finally realize their roster is bloated with overaged and overpaid veteran players?

The Yankees are trying something new. The team that usually gets players who have just played their best five years in the majors has now acquired two (25 year old) players they believe are about to have their best five years.

If they are right, the Yankees have a high-end shortstop and a mid-rotation power arm at affordable rates for quite a while. If they are wrong, well, it means the present and future take on an even bleaker forecast.
