SCDMA Came Onto the Stage
BEIJING, Jun 10, 2003 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- There are always new entrants in China's mobile telecom market. After the rule-out of 450 MHz CDMA by the Ministry of Information Industry of China, a new technology, SCDMA based on TD-SCDMA marched onto the stage.
After trail operation in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangxi and Shaanxi, China Netcom Corp. recently built scale SCDMA networks in hopes of grabbing PHS markets from China Unicom.
Different from PHS based on local loop network, CDMA450M and SCDMA are genuinely derived from mobile telecommunication technologies. The former is 2G, and the latter, 2.5G.
Beijing Xinwei, a company with 40% stake held by Datang Telecom (DTT), is carrying out large-scale SCDMA commercialization campaign now. It believes that SCDMA subscribers will reach 1.5 million at the end of this year, and 3 million next year.
Chen Wei, general manager of Beijing Xinwei said that the large-scale SCDMA commercialization would restore people's confidence in TD-SCDMA and DTT.
He added that SCDMA technology was at least two years ahead of similar products.
In addition to the five trial provinces, China Netcom also completed construction of SCDMA network in other 16 southern provinces, but much smaller in scale, as indicated by Xinwei.
China Netcom disclosed that thanks to the good performance of SCDMA in trial period, its branches in southern Chinese provinces had reached a RMB 4 billion intention letter with Xinwei and planned to put them into commercial operation before the end of this year.
After one-year development, SCDMA subscribers have reached 130,000 lines, mostly scattered in special network zones such as Daqing Oilfield, Shenli Oilfield, and the Second Automotive Works. SCDMA terminals and system equipment are produced by Xinwei's Chonging manufacture base. (Ma/J)
