Personal Statement from Edward Flynn first,

The goal of this program is to combine the technology of using SQUID sensors for magnetic relaxometry with the cancer expertise of MD Anderson Cancer Center. Magnetic nanoparticles (NP) labeled with biomarkers are used to target cancer cells and magnetic relaxometry can be used to detect cancer at early stage and monitor treatment. This methodology when combined with the expertise of MD Anderson, will substantially increase the capabilities for attacking cancer. I am an expert on the design and use of magnetic sensors for biophysical applications and also on magnetism including the properties of magnetic nanoparticles. I had previously founded the Biophysics Group at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and was the founding Director of the MIND Research Network.. I was the founder of Senior Scientific, LLC to develop medical devices for early detection leading to early detection of transplant rejection and of cancer and other diseases. I have constructed and tested SQUID sensor systems for magnetic markers delivered in-vivo or in-vitro in animals and designed a magnetic biopsy needle that significantly increases the sensitivity for detection of cancer cells in the marrow and blood. I have been the PI in four Phase II SBIR funded programs and actively collaborated with the UNM Health Sciences Center in these programs. Senior Scientific is one of the selected Users at the Center for Integrative Nanotechnologies (CINT) where we have been actively involved in the development of new nanoparticles and coatings with high monodispersity and magnetic strength.

And could there be government interest in his work militarily someday too?
