The easy key quote....Apple was never bound to buy a minimum amount from GTAT... They hold the keys and can take them away at any time...
GTAT failed the drop test and this is obvious now they can't get past that. That is the thing they aren't mentioning. IMHO and I'd bet on that... otherwise the Apple money would have flowed in. No last payment hurdle (drop test) and that triggered payback to Apple. While scratch resistance is great, it isn't the 'next great thing'....
Since they have filed joint patents it will in the future be of some merit if they follow those patent routes. If not it isn't a big deal for Apple as GTAT will be nothing more than a tax write off on R&D.
Apple can gobble up GTAT if they want and add it to their portfolio at pennies on the dollar now at any time but only if they assume total control.
