OT: Here's the update for the board's longest run-on sentence contest.
jmspaesq and Sophist are running one, two with the addition of today's entries:

jmspaesq-

I also don't see the difference between 'shareholder activism' and what you term 'exercising voting rights' when exercising those voting rights is intended to achieve corporate reform as you suggest, rather than face the 'inevitable' external reform and regulation that will result from the 'growing groundswell' of support for reform that you describe yet I just don't see grabbing the political 'consciousness' of America which IMHO consists of an incredibly uninformed, apathetic and ignorant population--more of whom don't vote in elections or pay attention to politics than do--most of whom would have trouble identifying the names of most top political elected figures and those unelected ones in power (LOL rereading that I wanted to note that wasn't specifically a reference to the florida election and supreme court decision in bush v gore--it was more of a reference to people like Don Rumsfeld, Condy Rice, Paul Wolfowitz, George Tenet, even Colin Powell though those who disagree with the judicially determined outcome of the Y2K election might take the position that even DUHHHH....bbya is unelected though in power too--but I'm trying to avoid political discussions as per the rules of the board).

Sophist-

We should distinguish between TWO very different kinds of shareholder activism: (1) the normal participation in voting mechanisms established under accepted rules for corporate decision-making, such as proxy voting; and (2) the unusual measures taken by individual shareholders to go OUTSIDE the norms of corporate decision-making to influence or manipulate the share price of a specific stock, or the governance structure, decision making, etc., of a specific stock by engaging in lobbying or campaigning activities to engage the support of institutional stockholders, or analysts, or the financial media, or the SEC, or through press releases, etc., in order to effect some personal agenda of those individual shareholders with respect to a specific stock.

As usual the winner will be announced at the ASM, and the Grand Prize will be a private one on one with HG, during which he will explain what the "O" word means to him, and, time permitting, his use of the words "mandate", and "watershed".

jmpsaesq, don't get too comfy as I have to believe Sophist will take another shot at you.

PS. Guys, no harm intended.
