My comment..Sharp and NEC with less than a combined market share of 5%..accounted for over 65% of IDCC's total revenues
for 2002..Their total payments were over $57 Million of a total revenue stream of $88 million.IMO: When 100% is licensed the total revenue will be over $1 Billion..

Nokia might hit its 40% goal this year

June 01, 2003 15:17 GMT

Nokia’s position is increasingly strong on the mobile handset market, says Gartner Dataquest in its market analysis for the Q1 2003. It might even reach its stated goal of 40 percent market share.

Nokia sales were up almost a full point from a year-over-year perspective during the first quarter of 2003 after even if it’s sequential market share position sagged somewhat, the retroactive inclusion of iDEN sales to end-user data.

Gartner believes that despite GSM market share of more than 50 percent in almost all GSM markets in Europe and Asia/Pacific, Nokia nonetheless seems favorably positioned to continue to grow market share in these core markets through the remainder of the year.

CDMA looks promising for Nokia

Gartner’s view of CDMA market is quite different from that of Strategy Analytics, which emphasized Nokia’s poor showing in CDMA handsets. Nokia seemed to shrug off the Strategy Analytics dim outlook saying that the in the CDMA market few single operators can have a strong influence over quarterly market share. Gartner’s Bryan Prohm, Ann Liang and Ben Wood seem to agree when they write:

“Nokia at last appears to be gaining momentum in the CDMA space in the Americas.”

If the current trends continue Nokia might make a reasonable run at its elusive 40 percent market share objective during the latter half of 2003, Gartner predicts in its fresh analysis.

Prohm points out that there was no significant sequential movement among the market share positions of the top six global mobile handset manufacturers during the first quarter of 2003. However, he expects, the remainder of 2003 will likely be characterized by some legendary battles between Samsung and Motorola for the second overall market share position, and between SonyEricsson and LG for the No. 5 overall market share position.

Seeking positions to launch MMS phones

Gartner sees a momentum to still be slowly building behind midtier replacement sales in many regions of the world, but the full effect has yet to be felt in earnest.

“Many manufacturers are shifting their mix to include larger volumes of low-end product. This strategy is clearly designed to help drive market share growth in the near term, while simultaneously better positioning themselves to take full advantage of midtier replacement sales via color and camera enabled handsets during the latter half of 2003. Gartner expects that this might drive the total annual sales volume beyond 470 million units.

Gartner believes that the staggering increase of more than 18 percent over the first quarter of 2002 is due to the growing impact of what is clearly the most stimulating mobile terminal product cycle in recent memory and expects the handset industry to keep benefiting from robust replacement demand.
