National Lipid Association Launches Nationwide Triglyceride Campaign during National Cholesterol Education Month

Recent survey shows need for triglyceride testing and improved reporting by health care providers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (September 2014) — In response to recent survey findings, the National Lipid Association (NLA) announces a nationwide educational campaign to raise awareness within target consumer audiences. Their goal is to encourage patient education and drive discussions around lipid management and the resulting consequences for high cholesterol and triglycerides.

To activate this effort, throughout the month of September, also known as National Cholesterol Education Month, health care providers are encouraged to inform at-risk patients about the impact of proper treatment and prevention of complications for their entire lipid profile — not limited to cholesterol, but on elevated triglyceride levels also.

“We want to raise awareness around elevated triglycerides with patients and health care providers alike, as they may unsuspectingly affect patients’ health, even if they look and feel healthy,” said NLA President Terry A. Jacobson, MD. “Fortunately, health care providers are committed to offering their patients their best care, and we’re committed to ensuring they have the tools to do so.”

In a recent survey of health care providers, the NLA discovered the need for standard protocols to remind practitioners to measure and help patients manage their total lipid profile, including triglycerides. The survey also found that health care providers would welcome patient education tools to help consumers understand the importance of triglycerides and preferred ways to keep their number low.

To jumpstart these educational and preventive efforts, the NLA urges health care providers to compare their patients’ triglyceride levels to the following categories:

Normal: less than 150 mg/dL
Borderline high: 150-199 mg/dL
High: 200-499 mg/dL
Very high: 500 mg/dL or more
“If your patients’ triglyceride level is 150 mg/dL or above, you need to engage in a more comprehensive discussion about triglycerides with them,” said Dr. Jacobson. “Patients need to be aware of the potential causes of elevated triglyceride levels, which include diets high in fat and sugar, too much alcohol, not enough exercise and health conditions like diabetes and obesity.” According to Dr. Jacobson, “we are now learning that high triglycerides may be a very important risk factor for heart disease and stroke.”

The NLA’s main focus is providing resources for clinical practice and education, and generating awareness around lipid management for our membership. To support this initiative, the NLA will be releasing clinical recommendations mid-September on a patient-centered approach to managing dyslipidemia.

About NLA

Founded in 2002, the 3,000 members of the National Lipid Association share a common goal: to enhance the practice of lipid management in clinical medicine and to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with atherosclerotic disease. The specialty of lipidology is building momentum and continues to evolve with the field of medicine as a whole. In the past three years alone, changes in the field of study have redefined the identity and the area of science. In response to demographic trends that place an increasing number of Americans at risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) and epidemic levels of obesity concurrent with a surge in new cases of diabetes mellitus, the field continues to grow rapidly and to gain momentum in the medical community.
