That's just better business practice in general. Better marketing just generally leads to better business. In the case you mention, yes, more money for their shares would have been one possibility. This could have also lead to the possibility of less need for share dilution and better protection of shareholder value, or better yet, attraction of larger investors for private placement or partnership (which would have increased shareholder value). Marketing can make a world of difference, especially in product patent and development stage.
