I don't believe the flat hologram is the same as the walk around 360 degree view.

I think the practicality of a 360 walk around cube is quite limited.
For most applications, people work seated, facing one direction.
If they need to view something from behind, they're not going to get up out of their chair and walk around, they're going to rotate the view through a mouse, dial or touchscreen interface.
When we examine a three dimensional object, we turn it in our hands first, we don't walk around it if avoidable.

This would apply to air traffic controllers, diagnosticians and others where a few people at a time at most are examining an object.

Where 3DIcon has an advantage could be for public displays/presentation/signage and gaming perhaps.
But the predominant workstation type environment I would say no.

"as far as color and opacity, that's just engineering. It'll come (whether it's these guys remains to be seen)."

Opacity and color are fundamental physics and chemistry problems. Im confident they'll be able to add color down the line, but opacity is an entirely different ball of wax from another planet.

"I do agree that the image chamber is a super critical piece of the technology. That is the 64 dollar smile (or million dollar?) question...."

Yup!
