For the last two decades research has shown that the cholesterol particle size and number are much more accurate predictors of risk. In actuality it is possible and frequently the case, a patient can have normal or low LDL-C (the amount) and still be at high risk because their LDL-C is carried in small dense particles and the number of particles is higher than a patient with high LDL-C whose cholesterol is contained in a fewer number of very large paticles.
