Samsung arbitration has been completed, and we are now awaiting the decision to be handed down, possibly before the end of 2003.
If the NEC arbitration is any sort of guide, a negotiated resolution to the dispute may well be concluded in advance of the arbitration decision.
Samsung has recently emerged as a powerful player in the mobile phone manufacturing industry, challenging rivals for market share around the globe. A positive outcome to the arbitration will probably add considerable light to the InterDigital visibility, and may well precipitate additional analyst following on Wall Street. It could also follow on the heels of a recent upsurge in the stock price, which would almost certainly add to the momentum.
Though not directly related, the recent patent infringement case by Harris Corp [HRS] against Ericsson, seems to have propelled InterDigital onto center stage, and volume [post Harris] has boomed dramatically
.
Ericsson, [which stands to lose potentially enormous amounts of money in a wilful infringement judgement, such as it lost to Harris Corp], may be forced to conclude court ordered mediation before the scheduled February trial with terms favorable to InterDigital, in order to avoid the real possibility of financial ruin.
Clearly, this is a closely watched stock, and the volume of traded shares indicate institutional interest as events around the story unfold.
good luck
