MP Materials acquired the Mountain Pass mine and facilities in 2017 and began a restart of operations.[1] In 2020, production was 38,500 tons of REO (Rare Earth Oxides) and this was almost three times higher than under Molycorp. One ton of REO consists of about half cerium, one third lanthanum and one sixth neodymium/praseodymium. A subsidiary of Shenghe Resources Holding, a Chinese listed company, buys the entire production and then supplies it to factories in China. These further process the REO and sell the end products to their customers[color=red][/color].[1] MP Materials is investing in its own processing capacity, but that is not ready yet.

In February 2022, the United States Department of Defense (DoD) committed US$35 million to MP Materials to design and build a heavy rare earth processing facility (HREE).[3] This facility should be located at the Mountain Pass mine. This project will be the first processing and separation facility of its kind and the end products will be purchased by defense-related and commercial companies in the United States.[3]

it is true that there is a world economic war in the making.
competing for raw materials. china wants to keep raw materials for itself.
the brics cannot be trusted. russia and china are plundering africa.
europe and usa will eventually have to find their raw materials elsewhere, because the old supply is disappearing.
if the us wants to remain the economic and military superpower, we will still have to guarantee the supply of raw materials.
the bottom line is, that the government needs to make the right decisions now.
wrong decisions, even small decisions :, can have major consequences in the long term.
when we are technologically behind because of lack of raw materials.
