And just where are these Berliners going to get the money to go gambling if they have no jobs now? Or are you telling me this small community will depend on outside people to come gamble? Don't you think that the small communities around Berlin are in the same boat? It would appears that the jobs created by this plant would tend to keep the money in their pocket and allow them to spend it on what is most important to them and that is their families. The only thing a casino will promote is crime, hunger, and domestic problems. Is that what Berliners want from their elected leaders?
Sell at market and get out
No problem Jack we are all frustrated with the lack of participation by the leader of BKMP whomever that is.
Regardless this is still trading allbeit no volume. Until I find out different BKMP owns 15.4 % or 3 million shares of TFNG. If you can give me definative proof they dont then I will come to your side but until then I will believe what I choose.
No I am not jesting. If Sandy hadnt written the letter to the CRTC in response to Mayhem's proposal we would own nothing. Damn I hate it when people read a post and understand what was meant then attempt to make something else out of it.
"Whether we like it or not Sandy Winick saved us from certain doom with his letter to the CRTC. Without that we were toast. As it is we are still viable . I dont know the outcome of this but I do know we are still in the game. If Sandy didnt do what he did we would all have lost everything. We still may but at least he bought us some time. I have no clue what will happen but we can only hope for the best. It's all we have.Sandy could have let this die but he didnt. We and I are wordering why."

I agree this had great potential . I see the golf and tennis channel here and wonder how they made it and not TFN. I'm sure that Sandy and Mike thought that Mayhem could take it the rest of the way to the states. I am also sure that they are just as disgusted with what has happened to TFN. For a time TFN was the one source to go to for combatant sports, they had the best writers, sports commentators, and on-air personalities and were getting more exposure by the day. Since Mayhem took over they lost the writers, the sports personalities, the UK connection, and the over-all desire to make this an important channel. Big John said it best "Shame on them". I hope Mike and Sandy return to right this ship before they lose the Canadian markets completely. 10 degrees in DC at present. I wonder if Stockfire is behind this?
Yes exactly!!!!!!!!! These guys havent a clue
TFN used to be good....But now ? I wonder what Garrow thinks now that TFN management has completely destroyed this channel?
Changing times for Canadian boxing fans
January 15, 2009 02:03 PM | Posted by Chris Iorfida Comments0Recommend2
The new HBO Canada network has made a point of promoting the fact they'll begin showing championship boxing that originates south of the border on HBO.
HBO Canada will air this weekend's Andre Berto-Luis Collazo clash and next week's bigger matchup between Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley.
This figures to be mostly a win for Canadian boxing fans, especially if all HBO fights will be shown live.
For the last several years TSN has held the first rights for HBO bouts. They've generally done a positive job - they look downright great when you consider that boxing ranks below the Sherpa decathlon and semi-competitive cribbage on Sportsnet's list of priority sports - but many fights weren't shown live. Instead they were aired later in the week, and some of the HBO Boxing After Dark cards weren't shown at all, leaving Canadian fans truly in the dark.
It was also frustrating at times even for "live" broadcasts to have to wait for lead-in sports that don't have a defined time limit. NASCAR and curling seem to inexorably conclude and then have boxing joined in progress.
The classic first fight between Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward was into the fourth round by the time Canadian fans could marvel at the mayhem.
Other times there were egregious errors in timing. A broadcast of the matchup between knockout punchers Juan Manuel Lopez and Ponce De Leon last year was picked up right as a smiling Lopez was being interviewed in the ring, which was akin to an internet movie review without a "spoiler" alert or a Saturday night hockey broadcast starting right when a smiling player gets his Hockey Night in Canada towel.
Superchannel in Canada is also making a point of entering the fray. It’s picking up the fights that Showtime in the U.S. and some regional networks present. Superchannel will be showing the tremendous matchup between Vic Darchinyan and Jorge Arce on Feb. 7.
It's a great development. The Fight Network here has proven inept at covering boxing, showing its stripes after fight writer Jason Abelson departed. Any fighting that doesn't involve a cage or costumed men doesn't rate on the channel anymore.
The downside of this increased convenience is the cost. Most households have TSN as a basic cable offering. HBO Canada requires a Movie Network subscription and isn't available a la carte. Superchannel's four-channel offering isn't cheap either.
On the other hand, the viewer won't have to put up with commercials between 10 rounds of a 12-round bout. Sometimes things happen between rounds that are entertaining or even reveal a fighter's state of mind. It's downright ludicrous from a sports storytelling standpoint to leave a boxing match between the 11th and 12th rounds - Wide World of Sports never did it - but it happened all the time on bouts aired in Canada.
Canadian fans will have to assess whether it's worth it to shell out $200 to $400 per year to get their fix.
Still, it's a development to be cautiously optimistic about, as the devoted fans have been weary of playing the waiting-and-searching game.

Submitted Kentville pro wrestler to be featured on second national reality series

With one successful national TV series already to his credit, Kentville’s Rick Doyle, a.k.a. Trash Canyon, has landed another deal for a reality show.
Doyle, the co-star and co-producer of the new series, Kardinal Sinners, said negotiations reached a standstill last year with The Fight Network, a national digital channel that carried their first reality series, Wrestling Reality (WR). Doyle said TFN wanted to hold onto the international distribution rights they had in season one for the second season of the show. However, Doyle said the trick to making money off a Canadian TV series is international sales through syndication.
“TFN didn’t want to give it up and we didn’t want to compromise,” Doyle said. “It was hard to walk away from TFN, but we want to make a living on this.”
TFN still airs WR episodes on occasion and Doyle said they parted on good terms. They haven’t ruled out producing more WR episodes for the broadcaster in the future. He said they were happy to reach the deal with Rush HD for the Kardinal Sinners series because it’s much better than starting from scratch.
He said they would get the international distribution rights for WR back in February and then they can sell both WR and Kardinal Sinners as a 13-epiosode package - six of WR and six of Kardinal Sinners - with a 13th episode to tie the two series together and show how negotiations with TFN fell apart.
From pipe dream to reality
It has been five years now since Doyle and his colleagues began working toward their own TV show. He said they went from having a pipe dream to actually accomplishing the goal. Now, he said, they must get into the business side of things, build the product, market it and take it to the next level in terms of success and profitability. The episodes are all shot in high definition and there is a huge demand worldwide for such content.
Doyle said Rush HD wanted an original show with a similar theme to WR. WR was about the wrestlers putting on their own shows and what was involved. Kardinal Sinners will be about the main group of wrestlers - Canyon, Brody Steele, “Wildman” Gary Williams, “Kowboy” Mike Hughes and British star Frankie Sloan - going to work for other wrestling promotions.
The series will focus also on the reality of producing a TV show, trying to take it to the next level of success and other issues faced by those involved, including unemployment and depression.
Shooting began in November in Cape Breton with East Coast Pro Wrestling and in New Brunswick with Innovative Hybrid Wrestling. Filming continued with Rage Wrestling in the greater Ottawa area in December.
There were segments shot in the hometowns of all the wrestlers, including footage of Doyle in Kentville. Doyle said they focused on his everyday life and routine with his family, day job and training regimen.
Doyle said the number of half-tonne trucks on Valley roads amazed Sloan when he visited our area. It’s not a common sight in England.
Compelling TV
Doyle said they knew nothing about the wrestling promotion they were going to work for in the greater Ottawa area. The wrestlers assumed they would be doing bigger shows than those they do in the Maritimes, but Doyle said they were probably some of the worst shows they’ve ever been involved in. However, all the strife and conflict makes for compelling TV.
Producer Greg Hemmings of Hemmings House Pictures said Kardinal Sinners is an extension or offshoot of WR. He said the major difference is, in the first series, the wrestlers were full of hope, passion and high energy.
“The viewer was left saying, ‘wow, these guys are working hard and going for it’,” Hemmings said. However, Kardinal Sinners takes place two years later and the wrestlers feel a sense that their careers have not become as successful as they had first hoped. “They’re getting back together, maybe for the last time, to give it one more go. Wrestling has been on the backburner for everyone.”
Another shot at success
Family considerations and other endeavours have taken prominent roles in their lives, but the wrestlers want to get back together on the road again and take another shot at success. Hemmings said it’s a coming of age for the wrestlers, who are at a crossroads and wondering whether to carry on.
With the show expected to begin airing sometime in March or shortly thereafter, Hemmings said it’s well timed because of the release of the movie The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke, which has a similar theme. He reached the deal for the series with Rush HD last year at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Editing for the show is now underway.
Hemmings said the TV crew would be a big part of the show this time around because they have a stake in the success of the production as well as the wrestlers.
Eastlink will apparently soon offer Rush HD to digital cable subscribers. Hemmings said the digital channel features all sorts of extreme sports. Rush HD reaches about 350,000 Canadian homes through Bell ExpressVu and other regional satellite and cable providers. It’s available in the U.S. as well, so the second series should reach many more viewers than the first.
The name ‘Kardinal Sinners’ came from a group of Maritime wrestlers who broke away from promoter Emile Dupre to wrestle for another promotion about 10 years ago. The story goes that Dupre said the wrestlers had “committed the cardinal sin.” The wrestlers liked the sound of it and began calling themselves “The Kardinal Sinners.”

Toying with the UFC
How a Canadian upstart cornered the MMA action figure market, right under the UFC's nose

More Images » Round 5 action figures, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (L) and Tito "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Ortiz.Photograph by: HandoutAll the kids dig UFC. It’s the in thing with the in crowd. Blood spilled? Love it. Broken bones? Bring it. Action figures? Bought ’em.
That’s right — action figures. MMA has action figures, and it’s a quick thinking Canadian company that is to blame.
If you tried to find official Ultimate Fighting Championship action figures for your kids this Christmas, your search was probably fruitless. That’s because despite the UFC’s hundreds of millions of dollars in earnings over the past few years, and despite mixed martial arts being the fastest growing sport in North America, the company won’t have action figures on the shelves until late 2009.
A Canadian company has decided that’s far too long for MMA fans to wait, so while the UFC wasn’t looking, they signed 24 of the world’s most famous mixed martial-arts fighters to exclusive action-figure deals.
UFC boss Dana White will be very annoyed.
A chance meeting between Ontario advertising executives Damon and Barron Lau, and MMA legend Randy Couture inspired the brothers to enter the collectible toy business.
“Through my agency I’d done work for the Fight Network, and by virtue of that, I was doing a promo with Randy Couture,” explains Damon Lau.
“We had dinner together, and we’re joking around, talking about funny business ideas … ‘Wouldn’t it be great if someone sold plastic cauliflower ears,’ that kind of thing. And I said, ‘What if someone created figures of MMA guys?’ Randy’s jaw dropped and he said, ‘If you ever do that, let me know.’
“From there I just thought, ‘Okay, I’ll give it a shot.’”
With that, Round 5 MMA Collectibles was born.
Couture was not just the first fighter to sign an exclusive deal with the company, he also introduced Lau to other fighters. But nobody wanted to offend their corporate masters at the UFC. To get signatures on contracts, Lau needed to offer something pretty sweet.
“We had a few tricks up our sleeve,” says Lau.
Trick No. 1: Round 5 offered the fighters royalty rates up to five times more generous than the industry standard. “It’s a win/win,” says Lau. “The fighters get paid better, and we get to sign them without upfront cash.”
Trick No. 2: The Laus offered the fighters total creative control. “They pick the face, the pose, the art direction. When you talk to the guys, it’s interesting to see how they want to be remembered. It matters to them a lot.”
Trick No. 3: The company let the fighters sell sponsorship space on their figurine.
“Some guys actually got new sponsors based on our program; others used it as a value add for existing sponsors. Any deal they cut, they keep the cash. We just think it’s great that consumers can have a product that’s authentic, right down to the logos on a pair of shorts.”
As a result of this fighter-friendly approach, Round 5 is fighting off the superstars with a stick.
“Our first series was four licences. Now we have eight figures in stores, and by the time the UFC’s planned action-figure line comes out, we’ll have between 24 and 30 figures already on the shelves. We’re launching a new series of four every quarter.
“It is a full-time gig now.”
Meanwhile, the UFC paid no mind to the upstarts from the north.
After all, the toy and collectible business is a cut-throat game, so who would think a couple of Canadian nobodies without much startup cash could actually sign big-name fighters, create a merchandise line, set up national distribution and sell product?
“Oops,” says Lau with a grin.
But is Round 5 worried about the UFC using its immense wealth and influence among fighters to destroy what they’ve built?
“Not at all,” says Lau.
“We have the exclusive deals in place. We have toys on shelves. We’re building a brand. On top of that, what the UFC is planning is more of a toy for kids, while our lines are collectibles. We’re really looking at the the 18- to 40-year-old range — guys who want to leave it on their cubicle, on their TV, or never take it out of the box.”
But just in case, they’re doing deals for new licences at speed.
“What’s happening in the UFC right now, when they ask their guys to sign licensing programs, they’re learning a little late who they can and can’t create. I know Sean Sherk just rejected a UFC licensing offer and told UFC president Dana White that he’s doing licensing with Round 5.”
MMA merchandise is a booming business, but few companies have managed to enter the mainstream. Lau knows all about the stigma of ultimate fighting, but says the success of his company is a result of concentrating on what they do well.
“There are 1,400 different fight gear and apparel companies related to mixed martial arts right now, so it’s easy to hide in the pack and not be noticed. We’re not looking to create flaming skull T-shirts or start a fight promotion, we’re just carving out a nice niche for ourselves and hitting our sales targets.”
Indeed. The Canadian startup now has products in more than 3,500 stores across North America, with distribution deals in the United Kingdom and Japan just kicking in. Current deals will see Round 5 figurines in more than 11,000 stores within twelve months.
“We’re still in the process of educating buyers about what MMA is,” says Lau. “It’s interesting to see people open their eyes and say, ‘MMA is this big?’”
The Lau brothers have been lucky and they know it. After all, it’s hard enough to break into the toy business without having to create an entirely new product category.
“I was the guy nine years ago sitting on blogs reading play-by-plays of fights in Japan, and now I’m scouting the arenas looking for the next big thing. Yeah, it’s pretty sweet. But what it comes down to is, the business side of this sport hasn’t yet caught up to the popularity of the sport. We just caught the early part of a very big wave. There’s gold in the Octagon.”

The Fight Network Temporarily Off the Air in the U.K.
Posted on December 9th, 2008 in MMA Betting, MMA News, UFC News by admin
TheFight Network, a Canada-based multimedia company that provides boxing, wrestling, and mixed martial arts news and events, has been temporarily taken off the air in the United Kingdom. Their television partner in the U.K., Sky Television, provides satellite T.V. To over 8 million households. The Fight Network is part of their extensive line up.
I spoke with Stephen Gaynor, Senior Corporate Communications Manager at Sky Corporate, who had this to say:
“We’re not receiving a signal from TFN and in line with our standard
process we have removed the channel from our EPG (electronic programme guide) listings.”
This is apparently strictly a technical issue, which both parties hope to resolve as swiftly as possible. The signal problem started in early December, and has continued throughout the last week.
The Public Relations department of The Fight Network responded to my inquiry via E-mail, and said:
“We are dealing with the signal issue , we do not have an estimated time for the issue to be fixed. I hope [the technicians] fix it before the holidays.”
We will continue to monitor the situation here at Fighting-MMA.com and hope to have good news for U.K. fight fans sooner rather than later.
