CANNES, France -- Consumers are about to be presented with yet another promise of wireless nirvana from gadget makers.
New Wi-Fi phones, expected to be available world-wide within the next 12 months, would allow users to connect to Wi-Fi networks, which can be 100 times as fast as even relatively speedy cellular-data connections. The phones could be used for everything from e-mailing to surfing the Web and downloading music, video or big files such as PowerPoint presentations, and making voice calls to boot. When the devices aren't in the vicinity of Wi-Fi links, which are increasingly found in homes, offices, airports and cafes, users could switch over to traditional cellular services.
Prices haven't been set yet, but the phones are expected to cost about as much as high-end phones or personal digital assistants, which typically start at $500. The Wi-Fi phones also are likely to be bigger and heavier than the tiniest cellphones available today, to accommodate screens and possibly bigger batteries.
Depending on how such a phone is used, there could be cost advantages, because transferring data and even talking on the phone on Wi-Fi is generally less-expensive than using cellphone connections.
A host of questions remain about whether people will flock to such specially equipped phones and hand-held computers, whether wireless operators will help promote them, and whether cheaper, more attractive services will be available as a result.
Samsung's Nexio S155, available only in South Korea, is one of the new devices that can connect to Wi-Fi and cellular networks.
But the fact that the phones are in the works shows just how much plans for high-speed mobile connections have shifted in recent years. The industry was once counting on a grand rollout of "third-generation" wireless networks. Instead, 3G is late and proving a commercial flop where available. Wi-Fi, which relies on a standard known as 802.11, is growing in popularity, spawning combination devices like the new phones.
Motorola Inc. expects to unveil a cellphone by the end of next year that can be used for Wi-Fi services. Texas Instruments Inc., which supplies an estimated 50% of cellphone chips, says it is releasing at least two cellphone reference designs, very specific recipes for building such phones, within the next few months that would allow its manufacturer clients to make dual-mode devices. Chip makers Intel Corp. and Philips Semiconductors are pushing forward along similar paths. And companies that provide some of the biggest players with technology and advice say that many of them are tinkering with prototypes and test services and should role out such dual-mode devices next year.
Meanwhile, Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. in December unveiled a hand-held computer with built-in Wi-Fi and cellular capabilities that also enables users to make voice calls. Called the Nexio, it sells for the equivalent of about $1,125 and is available only in South Korea. Samsung says it doesn't have any plans to roll out the device beyond there.
And at the 3GSM World Congress here this week, Hewlett-Packard Co. is showing one of its iPaq hand-held computers connected to a cellphone seamlessly switching back and forth from Wi-Fi and cellular networks, providing some tangible proof of the concept.
A growing number of hand-helds, such as the Palm Pilot and Pocket PC devices, include either a cellular or Wi-Fi connection and allow users to add special cards or adapters to access both. Nokia Corp. also sells a dual Wi-Fi and cellular card to be used in laptops.
Nokia, Palm Inc., Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson, and Qualcomm Inc. all say they are looking into Wi-Fi phones and either don't have exact plans yet or won't reveal more until they announce specific products.
Some argue that Wi-Fi connections over phones are one way to get users hooked on high-speed data applications in preparation for when 3G services do really arrive in force. Recent statements suggest the operators aren't totally closed to such dual-mode devices.
"If it's possible, I would very much like to see something like that," said Solomon Trujillo, shortly after he was named last week as chief executive of Orange SA, Europe's second-largest wireless operator.
Doubters caution that the task of packaging the two technologies together is formidable. Still others question whether Wi-Fi networks are ubiquitous enough to justify the new devices. "Especially in a handset we just don't see the utility at this point because there are so few areas where you can" access Wi-Fi networks, says Jeff Belk, a senior vice president for marketing at Qualcomm.
Proponents say for businesses that are already installing Wi-Fi networks they make a lot of sense. Industry players predict they will first be pitched to corporate users and then trickle down to the consumer market.
"This is definitely going to happen," says Jon Hindle, strategic technology manager for world-wide mobility at Cisco Systems Inc.

Sunpoop... I appreciate the effort into retail and understand how was not successful. In fact, I commend edig's efforts.
I don't expect management to pump us with fluffy PR's, on the contrary todays PR should have been addressed to us directly at the SHM. We own the company and everthing mentioned in todays PR was executed before the meeting. Managers were avoiding accountability and sacrificed some of the credibility they gained in releasing real products.
I am hoping there might be a reasonable rebuttal from one credible member of this board. I won't debate their position. I simply lost site of the silver lining.

Valid point in assuming the 'Consumer Electronics Business Unit' and Boska are gone... Now we are left with assumptions to understand whats going on.
It is disturbing the culture of this company allows management to avoid accountability to the owners. The president and CEO was deceptively "side stepping" the transparent reorganization of the business.
The company did not meet revenue guidance and considering the economic environment it is not a surprise. BUT, management neither recognized shortcomings of specific forcasts nor did they communicate business developments in a forum created specifically for directly addressing shareholders. They lied to our face!
At best management blatantly told half truths and the evidence is in todays PR. This information was obvious at the SHM and they still called the earth flat. EDIG should have disseminated the business developments released today at the SHM.
Notwithstanding similar events of the past three years... edig has demonstrated less than zero credability which equates to the value of the stock. There appears to be no diligent efforts to maximize shareholder wealth.
Sure they have cool products but a better looking mouse trap does not guarantee success. The features and benefits of our technology, as I understand it, does not appear to be unique to e.Digital anymore. Credibility is the best value a management can offer aside from making money and generating cash flows. Without credability, revenue, cash flow, unique technology or a clear path toward any the above... Can anyone make a REASONABLE or LOGICAL case for this company being a success?

I'm still in school... from my experience, if you visit the college book-store today the only person you'll find is a hung-over student surfing the net while working for beer money. If you were at the bookstore as recently as 2 weeks ago there would have been a line going out the door for students buying and returning supplies. Campuses are pretty well automated and disbursments have already been made so the $$$ is spent. The window for returning books is over, the drop deadline has past and students are already beginning to register for next semester classes.
IMO- We missed the opportunity for consumer sales at the book stores... see ya next semester.
I doubt it will affect edig but it will give them something else to blame in addition to the melting economy.

Would you go so far as to say the ultimate goal of EDIG's broadband division is x-on-demand subscription services?
According to Jordan Greenhall, CEO of DivX Networks, which delivers DVD-quality VOD to PC users over broadband networks, the traditional pay TV paradigm is also being turned on its head. "If you actually have a passionate user base of two million people who want to watch content, you can do a subscription VOD channel," said Greenhall. "The model is fantastic, the revenue is fantastic and you don't even think about advertising."
Suggesting a paradigm shift and bypassing the PC is an ambitious business plan that may burn bridges, then again, with products that rely on the PC and no relationship with content providers; EDIG is strategically placed to take advantage of wherever the market moves.

Ultimately, this is a gadget for techies not consumers of electronics.
How entertaining can it be to watch a movie on a 1.5" screen? It's like watching a movie through the scope of a camcorder... not very entertaining never-mind fun. Even if the Archos did deliver an enjoyable experience it is difficult to share with more than one person.
To have an enjoyable experience the minimum size screen would be similar to a PDA; where a majority of the product's face is viewable area.
IMHO devices like Archos have nothing more than a "wow" factor. You can conveniently store media and share the experience with one other person when you press your heads together.
I think the Archos is cool but it will not deliver an enoyable experience.

I may be naive but "...subscription content partners..." may refer to companies that provide content for subscription. Would it not be music labels who provide content, thus making them content partners?

What is smaller than a laptop, bigger than a PDA and puts a five-inch screen in your hand? The forthcoming Nexio, from Korean electronics giant Samsung. The Nexio features a color screen, a built-in CDMA2000 module for wireless Internet access, and the Windows CE 3.0 operating system.
It is among an array of new products that converge laptop and PDA capabilities.
''It's essentially a new class of products that are below the laptop realm, but above the PDA,'' IDC analyst Alex Slawsby told Wireless NewsFactor, ''so it could be considered a super PDA.''
Right now, the Nexio is available only in Korea, but the device is gaining attention in the U.S. market, which can expect to see it by the end of the year. Measuring 155mm x 91mm x 15mm, the handheld weighs 240 grams without a battery.
Big Picture, Big Ticket
Nexio's most distinctive features are its 5.1 inch LCD screen with 800x480 resolution, wide area networking connectivity and a more powerful platform for larger, more complex applications. The device has a 206MHz StrongARM 1110 processor, 64MB SDRAM/32MB Flash ROM, and it sports handwriting recognition and a thumb keyboard for input.
Samsung has not announced U.S. pricing, but the Nexio is expected to cost about US$1,000.
The device comes with a mobile office application package that includes Pocket Word, spreadsheet, PowerPoint viewer and media player. Options include GPS (global positioning satellite) capability, a digital camera and wireless LAN connectivity.
Nebulous World
IDC's Slawsby believes the Nexio does represent a solid entrance into ''the nebulous world where things converge,'' but that such devices are priced too close to laptops to gain momentum.
However, he speculated that Nexio and comparable products, such as a similar handheld from Tiqit and the more tablet-like ViewPad 100 from ViewSonic, may find some success in the business market.
''There's a growing trend in business where individuals are looking at the PDA as a replacement to the laptop,'' Slawsby said, adding the price of Nexio-like handhelds and tablet PCs may fall when Microsoft ( Nasdaq: MSFT - news) and IBM ( NYSE: IBM - news) start to push similar products.
Business Decision
Forrester Research ( Nasdaq: FORR - news) senior analyst Charles Golvin told Wireless NewsFactor that despite enthusiasm for the idea of replacing laptops with handhelds, the smaller devices are not capable of running the applications that are ''the heart and soul of the enterprise.''
''There's a lot you're looking at giving up if you go completely with a handheld,'' Golvin said.
However, such devices as the Nexio -- which includes voice recording, telephony and e-mail support -- may bridge the gap between the handheld and more powerful laptop by capitalizing on the convergence of voice and data.
According to Slawsby, businesses are interested in replacing expensive laptops with combination IT solutions for workers, such as a low-end notebook device and handheld.
''The greatest trend is to give [employees] a lower cost notebook and handheld rather than a comparably priced notebook,'' Slawsby said.
Samsung was not willing or not able to comment on this story in time for publication.
