A Marijuana Major? Other colleges offer cannabis courses to help students get industry jobs
Scottsdale Community College (SCC) in Arizona recently announced an eight-week training course for the cannabis industry.
“Knowledge is power,” says Dr. Bobra Crockett, who oversees curriculum development. Students can study a range of topics including business planning, marketing, finance, regulations, and social justice, she explained.
SCC intends to use its online program to train students outside of the Arizona area and hopefully teach aspiring entrepreneurs and those already in the illegal cannabis space who want to shift their skills to the professional market.
“Our goal is to develop a skilled and trained workforce,” added Crockett.
SCC is just one example of a school that is optimizing its offerings to keep up with the growing trend: as the demand for college graduates increases, more students will look for programs that focus on marijuana.
At the moment there is an education gap. As a rule, companies rely solely on experience and recommendations from valued sources as primary qualifiers. That outlook changes with each school year, and colleges are developing in the burgeoning marijuana industry.
More colleges are embracing cannabis
Oaksterdam University was believed to be the first and so far only viable option for in-class cannabis education.
But there has been a surge in new schools trying to prepare students for the market. Española based Northern New Mexico Collegehas worked with state education provider SeedCrest, for example, to bring its program online by March 22nd.
Western Washington University also announced a new program for 2021. The university worked with the media and industry education platform Green Flower to fill the skills gap.
Western Illinois University joined the effort in February 2020 with the introduction of two minors focused on cannabis production and culture. The programs started in the fall semester of 2020.
Clark University in Massachusetts touts having the nation’s first certificate for regulating cannabis control. Launched in June 2019, the program provides students with training in local politics and counseling.
Associate Dean Mary Piecewicz says that the success of a program depends on its learning outcomes.
“A cannabis program needs to be flexible to adapt to the ever-changing legal landscape at both local and state levels in order to remain relevant,” she adds.
Personnel / business perspective
Cannabis human resource and business leaders praise the influx of educational opportunities.
Dr. Stuart Titus, CEO of Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTC: MJNA) told Benzinga that cannabis “may be one of the greatest growth opportunities in the country’s history and may not be needed at this point.”
The need for formal education grows as space continues to be legalized, explained Titus. A budtender role is likely to merge more with functions that a pharmacist would perform. In the coming years, Dr. Titus graduated with “a tremendous impact on the industry”.
Titus also stressed the importance of on-the-job training, whether through formal training or other methods such as internship or training.
“You can’t teach someone how to properly cut cannabis if you’re not at work,” he said.
Recruiters have also reported an increase in demand for formal education.
Cannabiz team founder and CEO Liesl Bernard says alternative training methods for cannabis remain viable, but that will change as the industry matures.
“As the industry evolves, it makes sense that specific knowledge about cannabis is valuable and preferred by employers,” she said.
Kara Bradford, co-founder and CEO of Viridian Staffing, says extraction companies, for example, are now asking for applicants for degrees in chemistry or biochemistry.
According to Viridian, product formulation also requires a greater emphasis on formal education.
“As we continue to see these programs come online later, I think they will become increasingly important,” added Bradford.
$1.00 deff in danger of being reached today.
