"Demand for gas boosts oil issues
By Lisa Sanders, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 4:08 PM ET Aug. 27, 2001
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - The three major oil and gas indices moved higher Monday as the market continued to buy into oil issues on fears of declining petroleum stocks and high demand for gas.
Crude futures dropped Monday as the market looked ahead to the weekly update on U.S. petroleum industry inventories, which may reflect the addition of imported Iraqi oil for the first time since the country resumed shipments earlier in the summer.
"We think (the bears) will be disappointed again, with Tropical Storm Chantal putting a dent in arrivals from Venezuela, if not yet Mexico," analyst Tim Evans of IFR Pegasus wrote in a research note. "Flows don't normally reverse suddenly, either, and we wouldn't expect the market to go from losing 5.388 million barrels to a build without a transition."
When the American Petroleum Institute releases its data after the market closes on Tuesday, analysts expect crude inventories to fall by 1 million to 3 million barrels. The hope is that the decline would be offset in part by the arrival of imported oil from Iraq, which has resumed shipments following a five-week halt.
As for distillates, the weekly number is expected to be unchanged or an increase of 1 million barrels.
Gasoline stocks are projected to fall by 1 million to 3 million barrels.
On Friday, gasoline futures climbed to their highest level in more than nine weeks as U.S. refinery snags prompted concern over near-term petroleum supplies amid strength in demand.
September gasoline rose by 0.25 cent to settle at 83.82 cents a gallon on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude for October delivery shed 23 cents to settle at $26.67 a barrel, while September heating oil added 0.41 cent to settle at 75.01 cents. September natural gas shed 1.62 cents to settle at $2.544 per million British thermal units.
On Monday, the CBOE Oil Index (OIX: news, chart, profile) lost 0.8 percent to close at 323.61, as shares of Chevron (CHV: news, chart, profile) lost 70 cents to close at $92.10.
But the Oil Service Index (OSX: news, chart, profile) rose 1 percent to close at 83.67 as shares of Halliburton (HAL: news, chart, profile) tacked on 22 cents to close at $31.58.
And the Amex Natural Gas Index (XNG: news, chart, profile) climbed 0.5 percent to close at 208.30, while shares of El Paso (EPG: news, chart, profile) moved higher by 89 cents to close at $51.91.

FEATURE - Natural gas to help dispel Cairo's fumes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EGYPT: August 22, 2001
CAIRO - With more than a million cars spewing exhaust fumes into the air each day, the Pyramids and pollution have become the twin hallmarks of this ancient city in the Arab world's most populous country.
But some scientists say there is light on the horizon.
Advocates of natural gas promise to dispel the dreary haze that blankets Cairo with a new technology they say is safe, cheap and clean.
They say compressed natural gas, or CNG, is the answer.
"CNG is a fully combustible, non-sulphuric fuel which is completely safe and environment-friendly," said Salah el-Hagaar, professor of mechanical engineering at the American University in Cairo.
Over the past five years, Egypt has become one of the main countries using CNG as a transport fuel.
Today, Egypt ranks eighth out of 46 countries involved in CNG programmes. Other states pushing the new technology include Argentina, Italy, Japan and Brazil.
"Natural gas has much fewer emissions than gasoline," said Elhamy Naguib, public awareness manager at the Cairo Air Improvement Project, which was set up in September 1997 and is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Naguib said CNG emits about 85 percent fewer pollutants than fossil fuels, adding that vehicle conversion to CNG was a major factor behind a drastic reduction in Cairo's pollution over the past five years.
Egypt has about 24,500 CNG-converted vehicles today, compared to technology leaders Argentina with 400,000 and Italy with 300,000.
Naguib said his project was concentrating on public transport and had already introduced 50 buses running on CNG in Cairo. It planned to target the city's 4,000 transit buses in the near future.
CONCERNS OVER CNG-CONVERTED CARS
But the conversion programmes still face a bumpy ride as critics worry the technology may not be safe, and fear the drawbacks may outweigh the benefits. Some customers have reported faults ranging from minor quirks to fatal incidents.
"If they gave me 100,000 pounds ($26,000) to install CNG I'd refuse," says Mohamed Abdo, 32-year-old taxi driver and former mechanic.
Abdo said he had converted his car a year ago, but had to sell it soon afterwards because it began to break down regularly.
"I don't believe in conversion. Maybe if the car was originally designed for CNG, then it would be efficient and safe," he explained.
A major complaint about CNG conversion is the size and weight of the gas storage tank, which takes up one third of the car's boot or trunk. It also places a heavy weight on the car's rear tyres, which critics say accelerates their wear and tear.
Some Egyptians also worry that the tanks might explode and lead to fatal accidents, but engineers say the technology is safe.
"These are all rumours," said Mahmoud Elkady, professor of mechanical engineering at al-Azhar university. "The CNG bottle is designed to withstand the high pressure of gas within. The valves are well-designed and are not affected by external temperatures."
AN ECONOMICALLY VIABLE FORM OF FUEL
Experts say the main factor behind the advance of the technology in Egypt so far is its cheap price of 45 piastres ($0.12) per cubic metre of CNG (equivalent to one litre) compared to gasoline's price of one pound per litre.
"I've had no problems with natural gas, it's saved me a lot of money," said Mostafa Kamel, a 36-year-old taxi-driver.
"Customer economics work in our favour," said Frank Chapel, managing director of the Natural Gas Vehicle Company, (NGVC), a partnership set up in 1995 between BP , Egypt Gas and Engineering for Petroleum and Processing Industries (ENPPI) for CNG vehicle conversion and fuelling.
"We started our first fuel station in January 1996 with 200 vehicles," said Chapel, pointing proudly to the long queue of black-and-white taxis waiting to fuel up at the station.
"Now we have 47 to 50 fuelling stations and 24 conversion centres throughout the country."
A typical conversion kit costs 5,835 pounds ($1,500), a steep price for low to middle-income households. But Chapel said the option of long-term payment packages has also enabled people with limited financial means to convert their vehicles.
MORE MARKETING NEEDED
Even with safety assurances and favourable economic incentives, analysts say more awareness needs to be raised about conversion with target customers beyond high-mileage taxi and micro-bus drivers.
Chapel said so far some 85 percent of converted vehicles were taxis.
"The government should offer incentives to private car owners such as tax exemptions and/or a customs exemption on the conversion kit to lower conversion costs," the American University's Hagaar said.
Experts anticipate the government will do its utmost to promote CNG as part of efforts to exploit Egypt's natural gas resources. They say the conversion to CNG would cut down crude oil consumption and free up Egyptian oil for lucrative export.
Egypt's proven natural gas reserves stand at about 53.3 trillion cubic feet (1.5 trillion cubic metres), along with oil reserves of about 3.8 billion barrels, the Oil Ministry says.
One percent of natural gas production is currently being converted into CNG. ($1=3.89 Egyptian pounds).

ABRG! Mideast tensions boost oil past $28
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Oil futures rose back above $28 a barrel Friday and gasoline prices reached a 7-week high as a rise in forecast global demand and tensions in the Middle East sparked concern over the availability of supplies.
The rise in petroleum prices, combined with strength in corn and soybean futures prices, lifted the CRB/Bridge Index, a broad-based measure of commodity futures markets, to an intraday high of 202.06, its highest level in over a week. The index closed slightly higher at 200.79.
On Friday, the International Energy Agency forecast global oil demand of 76.4 million barrels per day, 500,000 barrels per day more than a year ago, according to a note from MV Energy in Princeton, N.J. The rise was attributed to higher demand from Asia and the former Soviet Union.
Additionally, investors kept an eye on growing tensions in the Middle East that could affect crude exports coming out of the oil-rich region.
Israel launched air attacks on the West Bank in retaliation to a Palestinian suicide bombing on Thursday. The U.S. and Britain also bombed three sites in southern Iraq on Friday in response to increased efforts by Iraqi air defenses to shoot down allied pilots, according to Bridge News. It was the largest allied strike against the country since February.
As a result, September crude closed at $28.05 a barrel, up 41 cents on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract hadn't closed above $28 in 8 weeks. September gasoline added 1.97 cents to stand at 79.9 cents a gallon.

U.S. Oil Service Stocks `Look Attractive,' Morgan Stanley Says
By Liz Chong
London, Aug. 17 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. oil service companies ``look attractive'' after recent declines, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co. said in a report.
The investment bank recommended that investors' holdings in U.S. oil service stocks should be higher than the industry's representation in benchmark indexes. It had previously recommended that investors' holdings in oil services stocks should mirror the industry's make-up in the index.
The Standard & Poor's Oil Well Equipment & Services Index has fallen 30 percent since May 21, led by Nabors Industries Inc., which dropped 49 percent and Transocean Sedco Forex Inc., which shed 45 percent.
Halliburton Co., the world's largest oil-services company, has erased 34 percent since May 21.

Many have suggested that IBM does not fit the bill to be e.digital's strategic partner b/c IBM is not the type of company to "provide to our OEM customers order fulfillment, customer service, technical support, and warranty services." Well maybe, maybe not, read the following:
What does it take to be a successful international technology company?
Ron Van Dell
Vice President and General Manager of Communications Products
Harris Semiconductor, Palm Bay, Florida
It’s important to foster a culture in your organization that’s open to the influence of customers and markets away from home. You need to have outside resources that work like an intimate intelligence network, a network that helps you understand what’s going on in the rest of the world.
You have to be willing to partner with companies who have better access to, or insight into, markets outside your national market. Build business strategies based on consultation with leading customers who are representative of world geography, instead of just relying on more convenient sources of information. There’s a strong natural tendency in companies to do what’s convenient, because of the extra effort and cost required to get out and see more of the planet. But that can leave you with strategies that only respond to the needs of your home market, creating the potential for misalignment by missing out on what other countries want.
It’s essential to have a program that brings people from other nations into your strategic and business management decision-making. At Harris Semiconductor, for instance, we often bring people from Europe or Asia into our headquarters for a few years, giving them a developmental and promotional opportunity. They add a lot, and they get a lot back.
What you ultimately get down to is people and how you develop them. You must be willing to hire people who have significant insight into another culture, even if they have no interest in living where you’re headquartered. You must be willing to leave them where they are and make a more distributed organizational structure work for you. At the same time, you need to have a program in place that moves people from field areas into headquarters and back, to correct some of the default assumptions people make when their perspective is limited.
Rick Goerner
President/Chief Operating Officer
Silicon Systems/Texas Instruments/Storage Products, Tustin, California
All too often, companies think they can cover Asia or Europe from the United States. It’s critical to accept the globalization of business, to have resources in each time zone, in each local environment, and to tie in strategically with trading partners or other companies within those environments.
One thing you find in Europe and Asia is that the alignment of trading partners with customers is extremely tight. Paramount issues at the front-end of the process are to understand who you’re selling to, and to identify the “buy-sell” relationships. As a small company moving from the US environment to support international deals, we initially allied ourselves with trading partners who were targeting the same customer base.
As an example, to support upfront designs it is critical to have technical resources close to your customers’ design and production. Those resources, including local support, help to facilitate the use of your product. Having capable people in manufacturing sites to assess yield/loss and create a fit-for-use environment is vital to conducting business abroad. As a global company, you must position your resources effectively to focus on customers’ requirements in the local environment.
Establishing relationships, knowing your customers’ requirements, and hiring talented individuals knowledgeable about the cultural climate reduces the risk associated with relocating people from your home office or attempting to manage the process from the US.
John Gleason
General Manager, Worldwide Sales and Marketing
IBM Microelectronics, Waltham, Massachusetts
A successful international technology company must have cost-competitive products and services that differentiate it from its competitors, a skilled logistics and support team local to the customer, a globally consistent infrastructure with high standards of operation, and a concentrated focus on customer requirements and service. The semiconductor business is one of the most competitive, dynamic businesses in the world, and it requires deep pockets and a commitment to investment in research and development, manufacturing, and marketing and sales.
In order to define and develop the right processes, products, and services, the marketing and sales organization must develop close relationships with its customers and perform market research that allows focused R&D and manufacturing investment. Once products are developed, the marketing and sales organization and a globally consistent product support infrastructure must drive and support the product line. This requires not only outstanding marketing and factory application teams, but also field sales and technical expertise local to customers. Our local support experts are responsible for ensuring that our customers get proper service, which can greatly influence the success or failure of our business relationships. These support experts speak the language, live the culture, and understand the dynamics and nuances of our customers’ environment in each region in the world where we sell. For our custom logic business (Blue Logic), we install “mobile design centers” within our customer base to help support and drive designs that work correctly in first silicon.
In any competitive business, customer service is paramount to success. You must understand your customers’ requirements and expectations and then drive to exceed them. You must not only stay abreast of the latest service innovations, but also lead in defining ways to provide added value to the customer. This ensures high customer satisfaction and repeat business. The successful international technology company must be dynamic, flexible, and responsive.

Oil prices rise as demand estimates revised upward
Reuters, London 8/10/01
Oil prices climbed Friday after the West's energy watchdog made a big upward revision in global demand estimates for this year and next.
Escalating violence in the Middle East also lent support, as did evidence that Kuwait will slice September exports in line with an imminent output cut by the OPEC exporting cartel.
London futures for benchmark Brent Blend crude oil for September delivery climbed 31 cents to end the day at $25.99 per barrel, 40 cents shy of the peak because of late profit-taking. US light crude futures posted a 44-cent rise to $28.08 a barrel.
The International Energy Agency, which protects the interests of oil consuming countries against the OPEC oil cartel, made big upwards revisions in its global oil demand forecasts in a monthly oil market report published Friday.
The higher demand translates into much more demand for OPEC oil this year and next, just as the Arab-dominated cartel prepares to slice production in September.
"An extra half million barrels of daily demand is certainly positive for prices," said Lawrence Eagles of brokers GNI.
Oil markets are also wary of Israeli-Palestinian violence spreading to neighbouring countries following this week's suicide bombing, in a region which contains two-thirds of the world's proven crude reserves.
"Middle East tensions are bad for oil supplies... If things get any worse we could see some Arab states coming out to support the Palestinians," said a New York-based broker.
The organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is due to reduce output by one million barrels per day, or four per cent, from September 1. This will bring to 3.5 million bpd its total reduction this year in response to flagging demand and prices because of slower global economic growth.
Kuwait told Japanese crude oil customers on Friday that it would cut September crude oil supplies by 6.4 per cent, on top of a previous 8.8 per cent cut in July, oil traders said.
Oil prices have held a narrow $1 trading band this week, recovering from a mid-week dip to stand just above levels from last Friday.
Figures showing robust gasoline demand in the United States and production problems at several US Gulf Coast refineries have helped underpin the market. Unleaded gasoline futures in New York jumped 1.92 cents a gallon to 79.85 cents.
Forbes.com Ten O'Clock Tech: CDs A-Go-Go
By Arik Hesseldahl
August 8, 2001
Even as digital music files have gained popularity, the compact disc is still going strong. It's still the medium of choice for pre-recorded music and often the basis for storing and trading digital music files like MP3s.
Since CD "burners" that let you save music files directly to a recordable CD or CD-R are becoming increasingly common either as a PC peripheral or built-in to a PC, a few consumer electronics companies have bravely faced the world of digital music by creating CD players that will play both conventional audio CDs and homemade CD-Rs. SONICblue 's Rio Volt portable CD player comes to mind.
Now Blaupunkt , the German car audio company, has brought out an in-dash CD player that can handle both types of CDs. It's called the San Jose MP41 and, while it will play typical audio CDs as usual, it will also work with digital music files burned onto a CD in both MP3 and Microsoft 's Windows Media format.
The difference between Windows Media Audio (WMA) files and MP3s, Microsoft says, is the size of the file itself. The same song saved as a WMA file will take up between one-half and one-third as much space--depending on which version of the software was used to create the file, the company says. It's also a little more copyright-friendly than the MP3 format has proven to be so far, and lets the song's owner set the rules as to how many times a song can be copied.
The player can search the contents of a disc and also lets you create custom playlists. That's helpful, since a CD-R full of music files can hold ten times as much music as a regular CD. That's enough for a full day of driving. It also has a built-in AM/FM tuner, with presets for 12 FM and six AM stations.
It's not the first aftermarket car audio system to support digital music. SONICblue has the RioCar and Visteon has a car-based player called the Mach MP3. SONICBlue's offering uses a compact hard drive to store the music files, while the Visteon product uses removable storage cartridges. In both cases, the storage technology used only serves to drive up the price. When first announced, the Mach was to sell for about $550. SONICBlue's RioHome starts at about $1,000--and can reach about $1,900 depending on how much storage you buy.
By sticking with the tried-and-true CD, Blaupunkt is able to sell its player for about $400. It will start shipping to retailers next month.

Justice Dept. All Ears For Online Music Antitrust Vibe
By Clint Boulton
Their online music subscription services haven't so much as rolled out yet, but already MusicNet and pressplay are being put under the U.S. Department of Justice's microscope for possible antitrust violations.
The probe was triggered by industry outcry that claims MusicNet -- a service formed by AOL Time Warner Inc., (NYSE:AOL) RealNetworks Inc., (NASDAQ:RNWK) Bertelsmann AG and EMI plc. -- and pressplay -- a more broad initiative spearheaded by Vivendi Universal SA and Sony Corp. -- could form a duopoly in the sector.
That they are being looked in on by the government should come as no surprise; the Big 5, that is, all of the major record groups, lock up roughly 80 percent of all commercial music and have fueled online music company shopping sprees (particularly Vivendi, which snagged MP3.com and EMusic), in pursuit of the upper hand.
Moreover, the fact that the factions have each aligned themselves with titan AOL (MusicNet) and Microsoft Corp. (pressplay), which bore the brunt of the mother of all antitrust investigations, does nothing to assuage the bruised feelings of potential competition or the DOJ, which is sworn to protect them.
But, why so soon? Neither MusicNet, which will serve as a kind of wholesaler by licensing its service and songs to online partners, nor pressplay, which will keep a more careful eye on customer relationships for consistency, have seen the light of day. And if you happened to listen to insider rumblings at Jupiter Media Metrix' Plug.In festival in New York City two weeks ago, they are behind schedule and will be hard pressed to meet September rollouts. Clearly, the DOJ wants to gets its finger on the pulse of an industry that has the potential to change the way music lovers tune in. And it's not too early to do so at all, said one lawyer.
Alan Silberman, an antitrust attorney for Chicago's Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal, told InternetNews.com that the DOJ's preliminary investigation is the new administration's way of laying down the law.
"The first rule of a new administration is to let the world know that the new cop is on the beat," Silberman said. "I think the issue here is that the Department of Justice has got a job at the beginning to make sure that Congress accepts the fact that the new administration and new antitrust head [Attorney General John Ashcroft and Assistant Attorney General Charles A. James] must improve their credibility with Congress and to let people know that things are not going to slide by."
Silberman said it is common practice for the DOJ to look at joint ventures, particularly where major competitors are involved.
"It's a perfectly legitimate thing for attorneys to do, especially when we deal with practices we don't exactly understand," said Silberman, referring to the new technologically-driven business models of MusicNet and pressplay. "We are always concerned that licensing tactics will be used by a company to gain authority and control."
Moreover, Silberman said it was importnat that the European Union and the DOJ, look at the same page, even if they don't read it the same way. The EU started poking around the new ventures in June.
"Nothing will probably come of it unless there is a major technological control that AOL Time Warner or Microsoft have that will limit competition in this area," Silberman concluded. "It will be interesting to see if most of the world will line up in one of these 2 camps."
As of press time, the DOJ did not respond to calls or e-mails seeking comment.
The news, first reported Saturday by the San Jose Mercury News, comes just a few days after U.S. Reps. Chris Cannon (R-Utah) and Rick Boucher (D-Va.) proposed the Music Online Competition Act, (MOCA), which addresses "specific deficiencies" in current copyright laws. Interestingly, in the course of a press conference held in Washington, D.C. to outline MOCA, Boucher warned of a possible duopoly, so the DOJ's premise does not come out of the blue. Indeed, even analysts have eyed the two with suspicion.
Matt Bailey, a senior analyst with digital entertainment research firm Webnoize, said he didn't know if such a bill would pass muster, but noted that their actions may arouse government suspicion.
"The danger with them, is that the oligopoly could turn into a duopoly," Bailey told InternetNews.com. "Between the two of them they're carving up the market."

Ship with Iraq oil sinks in Gulf fleeing patrol
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UAE: August 7, 2001
DUBAI - A ship apparently smuggling Iraqi oil sank in the Gulf, with all 12 crew rescued, after it was intercepted by a U.S.-led naval force monitoring U.N. sanctions against Baghdad, a force spokeswoman said yesterday.
The Multinational Interception Force spokeswoman told Reuters by telephone from Bahrain that the Honduras-flagged Georgios went down on Sunday in international waters some 60 nautical miles (111 km) off the coast of Kuwait while trying to evade the navy ships.
A U.S. ship rescued all 12 crew members, who were "oil-soaked but in good condition", she added without giving further details.
An official at the Bahrain-based Marine Emergency Mutual Centre (MEMC) said the ship had been carrying around 900 tonnes of crude, but added that the resulting oil slick posed no danger to any nearby countries.
"It sank right in the middle of the Gulf. According to our modelling, the slick would not reach any coast in the Gulf," the official added.
Iraq often uses aged vessels to smuggle crude in violation of the U.N. oil-for-food programme, which allows Baghdad to sell oil to offset the effect of the 11-year-old sanctions imposed on it for its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
The U.S. spokeswoman said the Georgios had been intercepted three times in the past. The MEMC official said the ship had no log and lacked safety standards.
In April, a tanker smuggling Iraqi fuel oil sank off the United Arab Emirates, causing the Gulf state's worst environmental disaster in decades. (Additional reporting by Isa Mubarak in Bahrain).

Rig Count Rises Outside the Gulf of Mexico -- 10:00 AM EDT
by Rick Olivere, CFA
The worldwide offshore rig count, for the week of July 20, decreased by seven-net rigs, from a month ago, to 579 and increased by 44 rigs, from a year ago, with noticeable increases outside the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The rig count for the US increased by 16 to 1278, during the past month, again exceeding the 1990 peak of 1190. We continue to believe that pessimism is overdone regarding the recent rise in crude oil and natural gas inventories in the US, as a consequence of the economic slowdown. During the weekend, several OPEC officials, including Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi, suggested that there may be an oil production cut of 1m b/d to 1.5m b/d, as early as August, before the scheduled meeting on September 26. We continue to believe that the critical investment issues are that OPEC is focused on maintaining crude oil prices in the $25 range and that cash flows from current oil and natural gas production are likely to drive a multi-year drilling cycle.
Our Purchase recommendations and target prices are listed in the following table.
(Page oil 7202001)
The Weekly Mobile Offshore Rig Count survey by ODS-Petrodata Group (recently merged entity of Offshore Data Services and Petrodata Group, not publicly traded) shows rigs under contract declined from a week ago in the GOM, increased in the rest of the world (ROW) (outside the GOM and Europe), and was unchanged in Europe. The movement of one rig, four weeks ago, from the GOM to the ROW, and the announcement by Global Marine [GLM: NYSE] that two of their rigs are moving out of the GOM suggests our thesis, which is: the current pressure on dayrates in the GOM is likely to diminish, as 300-foot rigs are moved to West Africa and the North Sea, in coming months, as is discussed in further detail below. The worldwide rig count of 579, on July 20, was unchanged for the week, with utilization at 89.0%.
We continue to believe that the increase of 14-net rigs in the ROW, during the past 25 weeks, suggests an increase in drilling activity in the international markets (outside the GOM) by the major petroleum companies as indicated by Baker Hughes [BHI: NYSE] during its first-quarter conference call with investors and analysts. This conclusion is confirmed by conversations with management of Santa Fe [SDC: NYSE], on July 18, during its conference call with investors and analysts. Management of SDC reported that dayrates are estimated to rise 3%-10% in the Q3. We note that worldwide rig utilization is now 88.8%, as compared with 86.2% at year-end. This rise in rigs working suggests that dayrates are likely to accelerate toward replacement cost, as energy producers contract rigs to implement drilling plans, in coming months, despite the temporary "blip" in activity in the GOM.
(ODS7202001--Offshore)
Baker Hughes' rig count survey, for the week that ended July 20, shows the number of rigs working in the US decreased 15-net rigs to 1278, from a week ago. The rigs drilling for natural gas in the US fell by 10-net rigs, last week, to 1058, as compared with 736, a year ago. The number of rigs working in Canada increased by five-net rigs, from a week ago, to 343. Despite the recent decline of natural gas prices from peak prices of more than $10 per mcf to $2.95 per mcf on Friday, we continue to emphasize Nabors [NBR: ASE] and Grey Wolf [GW: ASE] as direct beneficiaries of increased land drilling for natural gas. We reiterate that moderate temperatures and the impact of the economic slowdown have diminished short-term demand for natural gas for both air conditioning and industrial usage. As a consequence, natural gas in storage is now more than 11% in excess of a year ago. We continue to believe that an upturn in economic activity is likely to result in a recovery of industrial demand for natural gas, which will validate longer-term estimates of annual demand growth of 3%-4% as outlined in the EIA Monthly Energy Outlook. This suggests, to us, a continued imbalance between production and consumption of natural gas, as well as increased onshore and offshore drilling for natural gas.
(BHI7202001--Baker Hughes)
REPOST: One piece of information put out on CNBC this morning is that Conoco has bought out Gulf Canada whichi is one of the partners of the Beaufort Sea Project. That is nothing but positive news. The buyout of Gulf Canada happened a couple of months ago and it slipped by me as well as others that are long on ABRG. Sounds very promising for us the longer we hold. Have a good one and good luck.

Davies stressed that DataPlay, which will introduce 500MB blank discs and prerecorded discs this year, will be "multi-codec compatible ... preserve copyrights" and provide "a user-friendly, non-obtrusive protection system."
Prerecorded discs will be packaged in CD-sized cases that will feature one album, he said. For a fee, the consumer has the ability to access online up to four albums by the same recording artist, promotional information, and audio or video clips.

A Letter from Michael
Working together to unlock the full potential of the amazing advances occurring in digital technology is at the heart of our theme for MP3 Summit 2001: "Mobilizing Your Music." At this year's Summit, we will showcase the Music InterOperating System (IOS), which is designed to "mobilize" the entire music industry for the first time by connecting retailers, labels, music players, music fans, and hardware and software tools. We also will provide a firsthand look at the incredible new wireless devices and technologies that are "mobilizing" music beyond the confines of a PC or home stereo.
Once again, the Summit plays host to the forward-thinking companies, individuals, technologists and artists working to eliminate the barriers between music and fans. As in past years, it will serve as the central hub for the intellect, science and spirit behind making this dream a reality. In addition to a good deal of stimulating discussion and debate, the MP3 Summit will be a showcase for services and products grounded in practical, real-world business and technology applications.
In spite of the massive growth in this space, MP3 Summit 2001 remains dedicated to the diverse community from which our company has grown. With this in mind, we are offering an early registration fee.
We welcome artists, record labels, lawyers, politicians, businessmen and developers, as together we look forward to better serving music fans around the globe.
