I think for Southwest to use digeplayer effectively, they need to figure out how to get them to the customer prior to boarding, and let the customer keep them until they are done flying. I'm not sure how to do this, but typically on Southwest you have short flights and a change of planes at least once - so if you could keep the digeplayer during layovers and waiting to board I think it could be a very powerful and extremely popular device.
Again, not sure how you do this - someone, somewhere is making the big bucks to figure this out.
Will any software company ever put out software with out bugs?
Let me answer that for you....
NO!!!!
I'm sure this has been posted, but here it is anyway - Interesting how JetBlue's new video service will feature movies from 20th century fox as well as episodes of the Simpson's:
JetBlue To Add Fox Video Entertainment System And Debut XM Satellite Radio In-Flight In 2004
-- Low-fare Carrier Will Offer up to 100 Channels of Satellite Radio Free of Charge and Add Movies and Episodes of "The Simpsons" --
New York, NY (January 7, 2004) – JetBlue Airways (Nasdaq: JBLU) will make flights even more entertaining in 2004. JetBlue was the first carrier to debut up to 24 channels of live DIRECTV®* programming in-flight in 2000, and remains the only carrier offering satellite TV free at every seat. Now, in agreements with XM Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: XMSR) and News Corporation (NYSE: NWS, NWS.A; ASX: NCP, NCPDP), JetBlue will add up to 100 channels of digital satellite radio and movie channels featuring 20th Century Fox movies and episodes of Fox's popular TV series "The Simpsons."
XM Satellite Radio's free in-flight service will allow JetBlue customers to choose from XM's unmatched variety of music, news, sports, information and entertainment, all with digital-quality audio and coast-to-coast coverage. Current artist information and song title playing will be displayed on JetBlue's seat-back TV screens to provide a comprehensive audio-visual experience. The system is expected to be introduced fleet-wide on JetBlue's Airbus A320 aircraft this year and on the airline's new fleet of EMBRAER 190 aircraft as they are introduced into service in 2005.
In 2004, JetBlue will also add movie channels which will be offered for a nominal fee. The first dedicated in-flight service created by News Corporation's Fox Entertainment Group will offer JetBlue customers first-run movies, television shows, sports and news programming plus other original entertainment developed by Fox. The digital video system will feature an in-seat credit card payment system, whereby JetBlue customers can purchase Fox entertainment options through a convenient credit card reader.
[/B]
LiveTV, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of JetBlue, will install the onboard systems that will deliver the XM Satellite Radio and digital video services.
"JetBlue pioneered live via satellite entertainment for airline passengers in 2000 and, four years later, we're still leading the industry in innovative enhancements to make flying as entertaining as possible. Our new agreements with Fox and XM Satellite Radio complement our existing DIRECTV service perfectly, offering our customers an unequalled choice of in-flight entertainment," said David Neeleman, JetBlue's CEO. "We recognize the importance of giving our customers more control over their entertainment choices, and we're confident that first run movies and The Simpsons, up to 100 channels of free satellite radio plus our free DIRECTV service will continue to enhance the travel experience JetBlue customers have come to expect."
JetBlue plans to begin testing the new Fox in-flight service in the spring, with the expectation of launching it across its fleet in fall 2004. During the testing period, the Fox in-flight service will present classic Fox films on select flights, free of charge to JetBlue customers, including perennial favorites such as "The Sound of Music," "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and more recent releases including "Moulin Rouge," as well as episodes of one of television's most celebrated series, "The Simpsons." Once testing is complete, the multi-channel digital system will be offered for a fee, to be announced at a later date, and will feature first-run Fox movies and other top-rated programming.
The Fox in-flight service will showcase a three-hour block of programming highlighting current films from 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight and Fox 2000, as well as a library of more than 1,000 titles. In addition, the service will offer Fox television content including programming from FX, National Geographic Channel, Fox Sports Net and SPEED, as well as a feature television presentation from Fox Broadcasting Company. Fox will also create pre-and post-show content featuring exclusive star interviews, behind-the scenes short features and sneak previews of upcoming Fox movies, television shows and cable programming, available only to JetBlue customers.
Anthea Disney, Executive Vice President of Content for News Corporation, commented, "We are thrilled to be in business with JetBlue. It's a company that focuses on consumer satisfaction, yet shares our taste for out-of-the-box promotions. With our content group's focus on creating innovative new channels of distribution for News Corp. companies, JetBlue is the ideal strategic partner and we look forward working together on creating audacious events around Fox's upcoming blockbuster movies and television programs."
"JetBlue is once again demonstrating leadership in air transport, achieving growth and profitability in today's highly challenged market place by offering outstanding service and value to their customers," said Hugh Panero, XM's President and CEO. "We are truly excited that they have chosen XM to provide their live in-flight entertainment, bringing the XM Nation to the skies."
Don't get too pumped about the DirecTV on board, they have a limited number of stations and none of the network stations.
Interim Webcast Scheduled for September 18th. Looks like they may have 1 (or both) of the OEM's signed.
DECEMBER 18, 2003

Cassandra - you have no idea what's in those contracts and who owns what. My firm has hundreds of clients whom we do custom work for (to meet their specs/requirements), and we own EVERYTHING. We won't do a deal for a customer if we don't keep the IP.
For you to even comment something like that is ludicrous.
Password, thx
This will be the 3rd CES that the HD1213 will be showcased then, before the product is in production. Let's hope the 3rd time is a charm.
Actually, early in the quarter mgmt said they were still going to try and hit the number. However, if you want to be 100% accurate (which I doubt), mgmt said that they were not going to hit that number with about a month left in the quarter.
Based on the comment "best 3 consecutive quarters ever", I'm guessing the quarter ended Sept. 30th will be lower than the previous two quarters. If we were going to beat last quarter I'm sure the letter would have stated such.
The Q2 numbers will be public by the new meeting date. I'm guessing two things:
1 - The revenues they are expecting for the quarter will be decent and they want to have the meeting after they are filed.
And the more likely reason:
2 - The "Asian OEM" product will be in the marketplace and they want to discuss it.
Also, there may be a third reason:
3 - Alaska Airlines scheduled to launch IFE in October, if there are some slight delays it should still be launched by the Dec. shareholder date (as where a delay may prevent it from being launched by the old Nov. date).
JMHO.
I hope so - either him or Putnam to be followed by Falk & Ferguson.
You can replace those 4 guys with a senior accountant & a CEO with a strong sales background and really trim the fat.
Just b/c it's delivered this month, doesn't mean we'll get a PR or any news on it this month. In fact, it could be several more months before this product hits the market. The "delivered" part could mean we're delivering it to Softeq, to HP, or to the OEM.
The good news is that edig can recognize any revenue from the product once it's delivered (the million plus if the full allotment is delivered).
So, don't get your hopes up that we'll hear something this month regarding the product, although it would be nice.
They were much more forthcoming in answering questions then previous webcast. Hopefully they'll replay the Q/A portion on the rebroadcast.
Now if we could just close some OEM deals that they are always talking about!!
-Husker
It probably doesn't understand Asian languages (Digitway is an Asian company after all).
Actually the statement was "monthly overhead" which is entirely different, although Fred may have meant "burnrate".
The Ghost of CES Past
I, along with every other shareholder am hoping for some good news from CES 2003. However, based on past CES shows my expectations are not high. Here's a look back at previous year's shows:
CES 2000:
PR's announcing support for SD Memory card, IBM's Microdrive, a partnership with Rioport and our first OEM for the Micro OS, Maycom. This is the one we were most excited about, finally someone to sell a branded product with our technology while we enjoyed the all important per unit royalties.
In fact, Fred Falk had this to say about the Maycom agreement: "Our licensing agreement with Maycom is especially significant, not only because they are the first licensee of our portable Internet music player design, but also because of their manufacturing reputation and capabilities. Maycom has the proven ability to get branded, quality products to the consumer market quickly. We expect this arrangement to produce licensing fees and ongoing royalties for e.Digital. Royalties from Maycom and future licensees of our portable Internet music player design are expected to range up to $10 per unit."
I don't know about you, but I've waited three years for this product, I guess my definition of "quickly" is different than FF's.
I believe I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure "double digit OEM's" gained popularity after this show.
Here's more Falk, commenting on the 2000 CES: "Because of the successful showing of our technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2000 in Las Vegas earlier this month, we have received unprecedented interest from new OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). At CES, our MicroOSTM-enabled Internet music player design was shown by IBM and Texas Instruments in their respective technology suites. Our technology news releases from CES received strong response from OEMs interested in e.Digital's technology and its importance in the rapidly emerging Internet music industry. "
CES 2001:
One word, DataPlay. We announced agreements with Samsung & Toshiba to develop dataplay deviced, due out in Fall of 2001. We also signed an OEM agreement with EastTech for two products, a digital music player & a DataPlay player. Nice, one CES Show, 4 OEM's.
Here's what FF had to say about the EastTech relationship: "We were pleased to announce EASTECH, a significant new licensee of our jukebox platform. EASTECH has established relationships over the past quarter-century with name-brand consumer electronics manufacturers including but not limited to Philips, Sony, Kenwood, Sanyo, Panasonic, Sharp, Hitachi and Pioneer. Our other jukebox licensee, Remote Solution/HanGo also has significant ties with large, name-brand consumer electronics companies through OEM and manufacturing agreements. HanGo's customer list includes Hitachi, NEC, Daewoo, General Instruments, Lexicon, TIVO, and Harman Kardon. HanGo Electronics is also an OEM manufacturer of expansion modules for Handspring's™ handheld computers.
Revenues are expected to flow to e.Digital this quarter based on our EASTECH and Remote Solution/HanGo agreements. Through these agreements, versions of our digital jukebox are scheduled to be branded by consumer electronics companies and launched this quarter."
Again FF and I have different interpretations of time based events. He says "this quarter" which I assumed to mean Q1 of 2001, when this Press Release went out. Apparently FF meant "never at all".
About CES 2001 FF said: "We began this year with the 2001 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. This was the busiest CES ever for e.Digital. Our product designs were displayed and demonstrated throughout Las Vegas in technology suites and on the CES show floor before a potential audience of approximately 110,000 attendees.
e.Digital product designs were displayed and/or demonstrated in the DataPlay Pavilion, SD Card Association Pavilion, Texas Instruments booth, Microsoft Pavilion, InterTrust booth, Hy-Tek booth, EASTECH booths, and in off-floor technology suites with various partners and/or licensees. To the appreciation of our partners and OEMs, we provided full on-site support in their CES booths, pavilions, and suites, furthering our business development and marketing strategies.
During CES we met with current and prospective OEMs and licensees from around the world in the consumer electronics, audio, personal computer, and automotive industries. We demonstrated our designs and technology platforms for a variety of portable digital music players and other digital recording and playback products."
hmmm...Same song as the CES 2000 statements, yet still no revenue to be found off either of those years CES announcements.
CES 2002:
The big news was the agreement with Fujitsu Ten for the automotive infotainment product and of course the agreement with Evolution to develop the MTV player.
Well, we all know what happened with DataPlay, here's FF on the Fujitsu agreement: "The Eclipse by Fujitsu Ten product is the first of several major opportunities for our technology to be included in next-generation automotive infotainment systems. Infotainment systems are part of the automotive telematics market, which is expected to be worth over $1.1 billion in 2002, and projected to grow 16-fold by 2006. (Telematics Research Group). There is significant interest among several automotive electronics manufacturers and suppliers in e.Digital’s digital data management and wireless infotainment solutions. Automotive infotainment and telematics applications are expected to generate substantial licensing, NRE fees, and royalties for your Company. Each OEM agreement may also include revenue for manufacturing services, warranty services, marketing, customer service, order fulfillment, and technical support services."
Later FF would say that we were on schedule to deliver 1000 units monthly beginning in September 2001, with the total initial order being 4000 units for just under $1 million. Again, FF's timetables are much different. I take September of 2002 to mean "September of 2002", when he obviously intends for September of 2002 to mean "We don't know when it's coming out, if at all. If it doesn't come out, we have no recourse on this $1 million dollar contract."
And FF's statement on the CES 2002: "Our participation at the 2002 International Consumer Electronics (CES) last week was very successful. Our products, designs, and technology were featured in both our booth and technology suite and in those of our partners and licensees including Microsoft, Texas Instruments, Eclipse by Fujitsu Ten, Imation, Evolution, EASTECH, and others.
During the show we met with high-profile retailers to discuss terms of distribution of OEM branded and e.Digital-branded products into their retail stores. We also met with OEMs and licensees regarding the branding, bundling, and sale of a variety of e.Digital product designs. We expect to release news about retail availability of OEM-branded and e.Digital-branded products as well as further information about licensing and distribution throughout this quarter."
Is it just me, or did he cut & paste this from the CES 2000 & 2001 updates??
So forgive me if I'm cynical, but based on our past CES press releases and announcements e.Digital could announce OEM deals next week with Microsoft, Sony, Apple, HP etc. and I wouldn't believe one of them until a product was on the shelf (preferably on schedule) and revenues are showing up in the 10-K's.
At previous year's CES shows we have announced OEM agreements with: Maycom, Evolution, EastTech, Toshiba, Samsung & Fujitsu 10 (I may be missing some more) and to date all of these agreeements have yielded a grand total of ZERO dollars in per unit royalties.

Med - I have a 200 and it works great. Use it at the Gym which is key, the belt clip works great when on the treadmill and it's light enough you don't really notice it.
Also, the FM Tuner gets excellent reception, allows me to tune it to the TV at the gym (via the FM Tuner) or listen to mp3's.
-Husker
I think the key as far as student's ancillary spending is when the student loan checks show up. This is typically about a month after school starts (I think, it's been 10 years!). That is when all the big purchases happen (stereo's, computers, tv's etc.).
Also, most west coast schools don't start until the last week of September.
-Husker
My best guess is that edig will be launching a new website soon, with all the appropriate links and new company information.
I have no basis for this, but with the www.wedigmusic.com website and the Odyssey 300, 800, 1000 & Silhouette coming out in the coming weeks in wouldn't surprise me to see a totally new website to reflect the growing business and direction.
-Husker
Marc4,
I fully suspect it to launch tomorrow, I'm just commenting on the "why waste a launch on a friday".
IMO - Regardless what day it launches, I suspect they are not going to release a PR until it has a week or two of "beta" testing from the shareholder base. I'd expect a PR maybe the 8th or 9th of Oct. - even though it will launch tonight or tomorrow.
-Husker
Even if the website is to launch tomorrow, I wouldn't expect a PR for a couple weeks. I'd let it go live for a week or two to work any kinks out (I'm guessing that's why we had a couple sneak peaks at it) - then follow with a launch when we're pretty confident our servers and site can handle the upswing in traffic and bandwidth.
BWTFDIK?
-Husker
Mine contain no scientific rationale whatsoever. The original projections for edig were 2.6 this quarter and I believe 7.x for next.
I left next quarters numbers the same, even though the statement from pres/coo said that much of this quarters numbers were slipping into next.
So basically, the original projections for mgmt was about 10 million for the last 1/2 of 2002. My estimates call for about 8.5 to 9 million for the same period. I'm *guessing* we'll come in around 1 - 1.5 this quarter.
We'll find out more at the shareholders meeting, just passing time until then.
-Husker
I think (HOPE) your on the low end of estimates. This quarter is a wash, but I would think the next two would be:
EOQ (12/31/02) - 7.6 Million
EOQ (03/31/03) - 10 Million
-Husker
(I also thought Nebraska was going to beat Penn State, so that shows you what I know
Thanks Sentinel, I didn't realize it was taken off-line again.
-Husker
Don't forget about royalties from the beo & DP Circuit City device, of course we don't know volumes or royalty amounts but there will be some revenue there.
www.wedigmusic.com troubles -
I have an account and try to play music samples (when I click on Listen the files are auto downloaded to a temp directory). Anyway, when the download is done Real Player comes up and says that it can't find the file. I also do a search on the temp directory that the file was downloaded to and I don't see it.
Any thoughts?
-Husker
Didn't see the Odyssey line at the CompUSA in Concord, CA (bay area) today. Sales rep hadn't heard of it, he was a young kid who was pushing the new Nomad onto an older gentlemen.
Guess my wife will have to wait to get hers (I want to see it in person before buying).
-Husker
Lickily - That would be absolutely brilliant. If the mock-up didn't look like the iPod this player wouldn't have gotten 10% of the press it's received.
-Husker
edig mention in SF Chronicle.
In the technology section there is a huge article on why the iPod is so great (also mentions Nomad 3 & Rio Riot). Anyway, last paragraph of the article contains this:
And San Diego's E.Digital Corp. announced it will have a $350, 20-GB, voice-activated jukebox that closely resembles the iPod ready in the fall.
-Husker
My only question is:
After seeing the Odyssey 1000, what could possibly be the "killer device" Collier referred to in the May conference call? Collier said they would preview a killer device at CES 2003, but gave no more clues.
The Odyssey looks pretty damn killer to me, makes you wonder.
Any thoughts?
My guesses would be a video device, or a telematics device (possibly next generation Eclipse device).
-Husker
I agree Emit, not exactly the splash I expected (this isn't even a ripple).
e.Digital Schedule of Products:
July - Odyssey line of DAP
August - Silhouette CD player
September - Eclipse car mp3 player
Fall - Evolution/MTV device
Fall - Treo 20
Fall/Winter - DivX products
CES - Introduction of "Killer Device" as mentioned by Collier
Not a bad lineup when you throw in all of the unknown products (dataplay, automotive, telematics) that we may be seeing before year end.
-Husker
Marc - I think your referring to an Evolution PR that made the statement about the MTV/Evolution device being the first dapaplay enbabled device available.
e.Digital was mentioned in that PR, and e.Digital would have to approve the PR before it's released - but again e.Digital has ultimately no control when & where (if ever) this player is launched.
Frustrating - YES
Reflection of e.Digital or Management - NO (unless edig is the reason for the delays, which is highly unlikely).
Marc4 - I seriously doubt anywhere in the contract between e.Digital & Evolution there were contingincies on this player being released on a certain date or being first to market.
As an OEM/ODM provider e.Digital has absolutely NO CONTROL over the timelines and schedules of companies who license their technology. All e.Digital can do is provide the technology and any support needed to get their piece of the final product working. They are a small piece of the Evolution player - it sucks it's delayed again, but deal with it.
To call RP & JC to complain about this would be a waste of your time, and theirs.
If Microsoft licenses their OS to Dell (which they do), and Dell pushed back the launch of a new computer due to manufacturing (or other related or non-related problems), do you honestly think it would do a bit of good to call Ballmer at Microsoft and complain about Dell's missed dates??
Comp USA & Good Guys have the Treo 10 in their inserts in the SF Chronicle.
Excellent Post Lucky -
When I bought this stock in May of '99 I told myself I wouldn't sell until 2003 unless the fundamentals of the company changed, they lost their competitive advantage or I quit believing in management. I held this philosophy because e.Digital is at the forefront of a new and emerging market, markets take time to develop, mold and mature.
Do I wish I would have sold at $24.50 - ABSOLUTELY - who doesn't (I would have bought back 10x the shares)
Do I plan on selling now? ABSOLUTELY NOT
I will buy at these ridiculously low levels because the only thing that has changed since the $24 dollar days is we have more contracts signed, products closer to market, a stronger management and engineering team and next generation products completed, including voicenav.
Their has been considerable judgement placed on our management. As an employee of a start up software company in an emerging market I understand that these things TAKE TIME. My company signed an NDA with a major PC company - this process took 3 months - just to agree on and sign an NDA!!! We recieve more information from our management on future direction etc. than companies like ORCL, EMC, TI etc. provide, yet it's not enough. e.Digital is being held accountable to timelines that OEM's provided them, they are being ridiculed for products not coming to market which they had no control over and chastised for delays in the content availability and dataplay delays. Let me tell you a secret, there is a little company in Redmond, WA that employs 100K people and misses deadlines (Win 98, Win 2000, Xbox etc.) by 12-18 Months!
Warren Buffet lives by the philosophy - Never own a stock you wouldn't buy on the way down, during the dips. Yet on this board I read hundreds of shareholders posts whose only beliefs in this company is based on the stock price, and because it's low their scared out of their shorts and are panic selling. I have news for you - 99% of stocks out there have been beaten and are trading near or below 36 month lows.
Anyway, keep selling suckers b/c I'll continue to accumulate and have the last laugh!
-Husker
