Recession hinges on coping with credit crisis
U.S. economy must overcome debt — or growth will stall
3:27 p.m. ET, Mon., Nov. 12, 2007
No, it's not just you — the U.S. economy really is bewildering. The government says gross domestic product expanded at an annual rate of nearly 4 percent in the third quarter, the fastest pace in a year and a half. The stock market is still up by 4 percent for this year, despite a sharp 3 percent drop on Nov. 7. On the other hand, growth in consumer borrowing slowed unexpectedly in September. Some economists argue that the U.S. is teetering on the brink of a recession, if it isn't in one already.
Oil has exploded to nearly $100 a barrel, gold is near an all-time high, and the cost of food is soaring. It seems like high prices are breaking out all over, right? Yet the core rate of inflation is less than 2 percent a year, according to one widely followed measure. Confusion reigns right on up to the Federal Reserve, whose interest ratesetters are openly disagreeing about whether more cuts are needed.
Oil prices tumble to $91 a barrel
'There are ... strong indications that high prices are depressing demand'
NEW YORK - Oil prices that last week seemed on an inexorable path toward $100 a barrel slid more than $3 to the $91 level Tuesday after the International Energy Agency cut its demand forecasts and said crude supplies are rising.
Prices also fell after diplomats said Iran has handed over blueprints key to its nuclear program, meeting a central United Nations demand and potentially defusing the country’s standoff with the West.
“One of the reasons that we’ve been strong on oil all year is concerns about Iran’s nuclear program,” said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Alaron Trading Corp. in Chicago.

TORONTO - Global indicators are mixed for North American stock markets, while the Canadian dollar opened slightly higher at 104.66 cents US and oil prices rose.
Wall Street futures suggest a slightly higher start for the stock markets on easing concerns about the global credit market turmoil, and ahead of government data that might give more hints about the U.S. economy.
Investors regained some optimism Tuesday after Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said it does not expect further writedowns from the credit crisis. That propelled the Dow Jones industrials up nearly 320 points.
A barrel of light sweet crude oil rose 93 cents to US$92.10 in premarket trading today on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Overseas, Japan's Nikkei stock average closed up 2.47 per cent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index jumped 4.9 per cent.
In afternoon trading in Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 added 1.36 per cent, but Germany's DAX index fell 0.86 per cent, while France's CAC-40 shed 1.48 per cent.
On Tuesday, New York markets had surged more than 300 points as oil prices further retreated from last week's surge towards US$100 a barrel and Wal-Mart Stores delivered quarterly results that beat expectations.
I checked out DLAV yesterday ... thanks for the referral ...
The silver market is in great form.
Although, on October 24th they did release info indicating that Magellan entered into a "participation agreement" with TMD Energy Inc.
BUT ... it stated this as a LONG TERM PLAN.
I don't think that the company understands what update means ...
Many of us, like myself, have taken some massive hits with this company. We have watched it since it's inception and sat around while it fell, and fell and fell some more. I got away from these boards in early March of this year and didn't return until about a month ago when I heard of the name change and split.
I can't deny that I'm interested in the story and how it pans out. But, I can see the frustration with many of you and it's VERY understandable.
Chevy ... frustration and anger seem to be the common feelings floating around this board ... this has been a really bad ride since the beginning.
Almost 2 million traded today and good support. Looking good. Interesting story unfolding here.
Interesting ... well, what else could they really say?? They did what they did and now it must be down played and we must all go on from here and truly hope for the best.
Or bluestone ???
Americano !!! How's it going? I used to be ShortFuse ... in the old MGMX posting days ... I always enjoyed your posts. I just people marked you ... feel free to do the same. I'm still interested in this ridiculous story ...
Excellent point, elton ...
Yeah, Silver is kicking serious ass and should continue to do so ...
I'm wondering if it eventually stops and turns around at some point ... giving us greener days ahead.
Isn't that interesting, americano ... I also stepped back for many months and just about a month ago checked up on things. Could be a turn for the better ... you never know ...
T UNIT ... where you at ???
I'm still quite hopeful but many of us have sat here and watched this one since its inception to very poor results. I would love it if it turned around ...
All of this new hype isn't really backed up by anything yet. We need to hear SOMETHING from the company, such as updates about the company itself, future outlook, properties, technical data, geologic data, exploration data, mining data, reserves data, etc etc .... any regular company would be relaying information to its investors and to the public - especially with a history like this one ...
Good news negger!!! TNRI seems to be poised for a nice jump come Monday !!!
It's not easy being green.
Slow in here again today?
More movement today ... its still sitting pretty for the time being. Can BWNR make believers out of us that have been with it since the beginning? I'm hoping to hear something from the company soon.
Well, well, well ... interest has most definately sparked up on this one. Hopefully more green days ahead !!
Long term seems like where this one is at ... it moved up 66% on some decent news, imagine how it will move on major news??
I'll take the twins any time, negger.
I found the way that the company addressed the Silver Centre property to be quite interesting ... it almost seemed like a quick "Silver 101" training.
Silver is kicking ass right now and they couldn't have released the information at a better time.
This one has been looking quite juicy to be honest ... very interesting story unfolding here.
Some day ... somehow ...
I think so ...
A few of us are in your same position, networth.
It's absolutely dead in here today ... only a few hundred shares traded ... whats with the action??? Or lack of action??
Bed sores will do ... there are plenty of sores all over me as well from the long wait.
Well, we received an announcement last week of a participation agreement ... lets see what they have next.
There is interest on my end ... but I dont see many others on here ... whats shaking in here ??
I have cobwebs on my laptop.
Ergo ... long time no see. Nice to see you pop on here and offer your opinion. Alot of us have asked the same thing ??
More than opening his mouth, let's see some action ... some results ... something ...
