You made no argument to attack.
Just asking you if you're going to quote me to do it correctly.
Asking you to follow basic principles of intellectual honesty.

For a kid still wet behind the ears, you're mighty quick to accuse other people of lying.
Would you care to place a small wager, say $25,000, on whether my post was true or not? I'm aware that given your enormous wealth that's but a trifle to you, but I'm not ashamed to admit that with several kids in college an additional $25,000 would come in handy for me.

Actually, it doesn't.
Though it might affect the community.

Nah. If I were concerned to give people the impression that I was intelligent, I would casually mention my doctorate, or tout my membership in Mensa. But frankly, it matters not to me whether people think I'm intelligent or not.

Thank you for that post.
Not that I expect those it is addressed to are capable of following your excellent advice.
But at least you have done your duty in trying.
For us, there is only the trying. The rest is not our business.
(For the uneducated among us, that's from T.S. Eliot.
For the even more uneducated among us, he is one of the, if not the, foremost English language poets of the 20th century.
For those who recognize it as Eliot, but can't place the quotation, it's from East Coker, second of the Four Quartets.)

Bob, you're falling into that bad habit again.
You know what I've told you before. Never argue with a fool -- people might not know the difference. And a person is known by the company he keeps.
But you post repeatedly to mmmary. And BOP.
Keep this up, and people will start to wonder whether you're really as smart as we think you are.
You won't change their minds. They are both so rooted in their beliefs that the facts are irrelevant to them.
So forget them and get on with programming more good stuff here so the site moves forward.
JMHO, of course.
But you know what they say -- friends don't let friends post incessantly to jerks.

Oooh, such language.
Does your mommy know you type that stuff?
I have in fact posted on more than one stock related thread, not that I have any need to answer to you for my posting.
But at least I don't just throw out a stock symbol and tout it without any factual support. Which IMO is worse than not posting about stocks at all.

That's a noble idea.
But are there any posters who might take the opposite tack with them, and write immediately criticizing the management, warning them that the TOU weren't enforced (in, of course, that poster's opinion, but they wouldn't say that) and telling them they were dumb to waste their money here?
Thus my thought that you be selective in who you post the new subscribers info to, so what they get initially is more likely to be positive than negative.
___________________________________________________
Many shall be restored that are now fallen, and many shall fall that are now in honor. Horace
Well, if Welcome wagon is the idea, it would be better for Matt and Bob to identify a group of good (by their definition) posters and email them the info on new subscribers, sort of informally assigning mentors. There are a few posters I can think of who might think it fun to write some rather discouraging things to brand new posters.

Boy, yes, that could have been embarrassing!
But I doubt many people would be worried at finding that their spouse was a secret IH poster.

Many shall be restored that are now fallen, and many shall fall that are now in honor. Horace
I have no real reason for not liking that idea, but I don't.
One thing is that this might send new posters to these posters, since they are the only profiles immediately available, and they'll see little if anything, which is not encouaging them to stay. (Sorry for pronoun mix-up.)
Maybe better would be the ability to get a list of 15 or 25 posters at a time based on poster number. Then one could pick out the latest posters if they wanted to, or see some old timers.
But as to posting the newest posters, personally, I wouldn't favor it.

Zounds!
A stock prognostication from JoeMoney!
Now please tell us why and roughly when you think ORCL will return to 90. Simply saying you expect to sell a stock at 90 isn't any different from hypsters who say "Buy now, this stock is going through the roof!."
Analysis, please.

As a grandfathered, member, I don't expect to get every new bell and whistle that comes along free, when it costs IH money. I do expect that bells and whistles that don't cost you money (such as changing the options) will come along free. But I have no expectation that you should lay out money each month for a feature and not expect me to pay my share of the cost if I want it. (But i do expect that to be an option; I would be disappointed if you said "okay now we have this feature, whether or not your turn it off you have to pay for it."
Does that make sense?
___________________________________________________
Many shall be restored that are now fallen, and many shall fall that are now in honor. Horace
I basically agree with you, Matt.
Would I pay for ANY quotes? Nope. I can get delayed ones from lots of sites, and real time ones from my broker if I really need them.
The likelihood is that I would turn it off. It's just a distraction.
If I need during-the-day quotes, which I rarely do, it's easy enough to open another window and toggle back and forth. Virtually everybody on the site, I'm sure, has enough computer power to have two browser windows open simultaneously.
And philosophically, think about the kind of poster to whom streaming, or even delayed, quotes, are important as they read and write messages.
Personally, I would rather see Bob's development time spent on other projects. (For example, including the thead name on the public messages in the mailbox page.)
If it's going to make the site stronger, bring in more revenue, not provide a distraction or diversion from the main purpose of the thread, and bring in good posters, then you should go for it. But personally, I have my doubts.

As to my definition of upstanding, let's just say this.
I don't know how much money you've put into IH, and how much work you've done on the programming, but I'm assuming not a hell of a lot of either.
Like most of us, you're here on sufferance, feeding off the money, effort, and generosity of Matt and Bob.

Let me know what you decide.
The locals are all totally volunteer run, so if people are busy, well, you know how that goes.
Each club is very different, so you need to be careful to match a club with your level of commitment. Some require very little -- I know one club that has members who haven't done a stock analysis for years. Ours requires a hefty commitment -- we spread quite a bit of work around and expect each member to bear his or her share of the load. IMO, that's why we're successful and the other club . . . well, let's just say I'm glad my money isn't in their club!

The question you have to ask, is how much people would pay to have quotes on their screen instead of being able to flip to another browser window showing quotes, for free.
I know I wouldn't. Would others?
Best way to find out is to do a bit of market research (put out the question to all members, how much do you think you would pay extra for those quotes on IH), calculate what the costs would be to do it, amortizing the programming and maintenance costs and adding in the quote server costs, set an initial price, figure out how many subscribers you need in order to make it worth doing, given the costs, then go to the board and say "okay, when I have XX firm orders, with credit cards, for an initial one year subscription, I'll do it" and let the market prevail. If it's a viable and cost-effective idea, you'll get the subscribers. If not, not.

But IMO, last night's close, or maybe open, high, low, and close, would do.
That's something you could probably pick up off a free board such as Yahoo Finance fairly easily with a macro at about 2 am when the site is quiet. I know Yahoo has historical quotes you can download. I also know that some programs, such as Toolkit 4, can go out any time to the net and get the current price, and I doubt they pay for that. So doing that much should be fairly easy (says somebody who hasn't programmed for nearly 30 years!) and free

I have no idea what market-related message boards could possibly offer to "investors", as you
define the term.
Not sure what you mean by "market-related."
Can't answer until I understand that.

I tried to answer this in my earlier response. I have no problem with daily closing prices. It's the steady stream quote, which ties up bandwidth and usually costs money, that I think is unnecessary here.
___________________________________________________
Many shall be restored that are now fallen, and many shall fall that are now in honor. Horace
I obviously didn't make myself clear.
I have no problem with "people [who] do like to see quotes every day. "
But that's a different thing from a constantly on streaming quote, whether real time or delayed, that is on the screen all the time you're on that stock's thread.
___________________________________________________
Many shall be restored that are now fallen, and many shall fall that are now in honor. Horace
Real, or even delayed-time quotes, are of interest to traders, but not investors (I know, here we go again! But I have stated my view of the distinction already.) If one really cares, open a second browser window to Yahoo or Quicken or some other quote service. But having quotes on board is really catering to the kind of members Matt and Bob are saying they want to morph away from.

I'm glad Lincare worked out for you, too. I'm happy with my investment in it.
It takes a bit of work to find good, fairly valued companies, but's a lot of fun when you actually find one.
And sometimes a gas when you think you have and don't. I don't know whether I told you this story. I was coming back from a workshop with a couple of members of my group. We had a few hours on the ferry to kill, so I brought up my laptop and was toying with setting up a few screens in Stock Investor Pro and checking them out in Toolkit. I ran across this company that looked just fanstastic. Solid, straight lines, growth around 30%, strong but not silly, PERT marching along beautifully, well down in buy zone, everything looking just fantastic. The others, being a bit lubricated by then, wished we had a wireless connection so they could throw in a buy order on the spot. I said we should at least check them up a little.
Well, to make a long story, went on the web that night and found, lo and behold, three of their directors had just resigned and the SEC had started an investigation into their accounting practices. Oops!
But it was a good lesson, if we needed it, in looking behind the numbers to make sure they hold up to scrutiny!
I even forget the name of the compnay, but I still have the screen stored away on the laptop; this just jogged my memory. Maybe I'll go try to dig it up and see what ever happened to it.
Who knows -- the business model was pretty solid (they shipped used cars to third world countries), and maybe they've gotten over this bump andare back to health again. Could happen, I suppose!
