Cannabis Cup.. Anyone have any info??
The US Cannabis Cup is in the permitting process with Pueblo County right now, after Adams County commissioners denied the event last week. The US Cannabis Cup is expected to bring 17,000 people a day to Pueblo to celebrate the unofficial marijuana holiday of 4/20 this year. Organizers from High Times magazine say it will make a big impact across southern Colorado, but not everyone is thrilled by the prospect.
Billed as "The Biggest 420 Party on the Planet," the US Cannabis Cup brings together marijuana entrepreneurs and enthusiasts from all over the country and beyond for three days. Previously held at the Denver Mart, Adams County decided this year High Times would have to find a new venue, citing concerns with overcrowding, attendee conduct and vendors handing out and selling marijuana illegally.
The organizers looked farther south, where marijuana has become a cash crop, "because of its climate, because of its large open space...because of its tolerant nature," says High Times advertising and sponsorship director Matt Stang.
"I think it's a good chance for Pueblo's economy to really boost, as well as for Pueblo to demonstrate that we have a lot more to offer than just quality marijuana," says Chris Jones, operations manager at Marisol Therapeutics. Marisol Therapeutics is already planning for a big showing at the local cup.
Last year Stang says the event brought in an estimated $40 million to the Denver area, with attendees spending about $800 each over the long weekend. He indicates a more lasting impact nearby, saying, "There's now about 80 businesses just around the Denver Mart that opened simply because these people came for the event and stayed."
The organizers already have a deal with Tommy Giodone to hold the festival at the same venue as Bands in the Backyard on the Mesa. "I didn't have much of a problem with that," says neighbor and drug addiction counselor Bill Mead of the annual concert. "This is totally different."
Mead says he is not keen on having thousands of people in his own backyard smoking marijuana, and says the Giodones have not asked for the community's feedback like they did before starting the country music festival years ago. "There were some people that were very much against it. I didn't have any problem with it, I enjoy music, but this is the first I've heard of it," he tells News 5 of the US Cannabis Cup.
Usually one of many locals to skip town during Bands in the Backyard, Mead says he does not feel as comfortable leaving his home unattended during the Cannabis Cup. Those involved, however, say there is no need to fear.
Jones says, "I don't think anyone's in danger from all these visitors coming. The most I can say is you might want to make sure that your local restaurants are stocked up."
High Times is still awaiting approval for a Special Use Permit to bring the US Cannabis Cup to Pueblo County, after having to amend the initial application.
Organizers are raising the age limit this year from 18 to 21. Tickets go on sale this week. To learn more, click here.
