Oil prices climb on Nigerian election fear
Concerns that oil supply could be disrupted as violence escalates
Updated: 5:17 p.m. CT April 23, 2007
NEW YORK - Crude oil prices soared above $65 a barrel in New York on growing concerns that oil supplies could be disrupted as violence escalates in Nigeria and oil workers in Belgium threatened to strike.
On Monday, following government elections over the weekend in Nigeria, gunmen battled security forces in Nigeria’s southern oil region, leaving at least seven people dead in the area’s main city, police said. The violence confirmed the fears of both Nigerians and oil traders: that political unrest in the country , a main oil supplier to the United States , is leading to more violence.
Sporadic gunfire was heard overnight, but intensified Monday afternoon after officials said the governing party candidate won presidential elections, and a top opposition politician rejected the vote, alleging fraud. Observers of the U.S.-based International Republican Institute identified several voting-day irregularities.
The week leading up to the elections in Nigeria was chaotic and bloody. At least 49 people have died in election-related violence since April 14. Stepped-up violence since early 2006 in the unruly southern region where crude is pumped has cut Nigeria’s daily production by about one quarter and sent global crude prices higher. More than 150 foreigners have been kidnapped over the past year.
"Amidst this turmoil, we doubt that Shell will decide to announce a resumption of Nigerian oil exports anytime soon (contrary to last week’s government claims otherwise)," wrote Man analyst Edward Meir in a Monday research note.
Light, sweet crude for June delivery climbed $1.78 to settle at $65.89 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose just shy of $66 earlier in the session, trading as high as $65.96. Crude last topped $66 a barrel on March 29.
June gasoline futures gained about 5 cents to settle at $2.16 a gallon, well above their 2005 peak of $2.505 a gallon May 11.
In Nigeria, turnout appeared low for Saturday’s presidential vote, which was marked by ballot-paper shortages in opposition strongholds, intimidation by thugs and open rigging that favored the ruling party of outgoing President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The International Republican Institute said Sunday that its preliminary findings showed the election processes fall below the standard set by previous Nigerian elections and international standards witnessed by IRI around the globe.
The presidential winner must gain the most votes nationwide and at least a quarter of ballots cast in 24 of Nigeria’s 36 states. If not, a runoff election would be held within one month.
Meanwhile, in Belgium, workers at four refineries that produce 800,000 to 1 million barrels of oil a day are threatening to strike as early as May 9 after wage talks broke down last week.
"This is really important to the U.S., because Europe is our ... backup supplier," said Andrew Lebow, senior vice president at Man Financial. "We’re talking about fairly significant refinery capacity."
Prices were also supported by strong demand from China, the world’s second-largest oil consumer, which reported Monday that March crude oil imports rose 8.8 percent on year. Analysts expect demand to remain strong if Beijing is unable to cool off the country’s sizzling economy, which grew 11.1 percent in the first quarter.
"Anything that’s going to come along and change the supply figures, the market’s going to react," said Kevin Lindemer, executive managing director at Man Financial.

OT......Ludwig von Mises on bureaucracy.
"The worst law is better than bureaucratic tyranny."
"Nobody can be at the same time a correct bureaucrat and an innovator."
"Seen from the point of view of the particular group interests of the bureaucrats, every measure that makes the governments payroll swell is progress."
"If you have to convince a group of people who are not directly dependent on a solution of a problem, you will never succeed."
"The bureaucrat is not free to aim at improvement. He is bound to obey rules and regulations established by a superior body. He has no right to embark upon innovations if his superiors do not approve of them. His duty and his virtue is to be obedient."
"A bureaucrat differs from a nonbureaucrat precisely because he is working in a field in which it is impossible to appraise the result of a mans effort in terms of money."
"Only to bureaucrats can the idea occur that establishing new offices, promulgating new decrees, and increasing the number of government employees alone can be described as positive and beneficial measures."
"The trend toward bureaucratic rigidity is not inherent in the evolution of business. It is an outcome of government meddling with business."
"No private enterprise will ever fall prey to bureaucratic methods of management if it is operated with the sole aim of making profit."

Seems like a lot of times a hot active board can be the kiss of death, at least for the short term. If the stock is really good, it will recover and continue it's climb as I expect WRNW to do. Some witnessed that over at WRNW yesterday. Attracts the hard core flippers.
Always appreciate your take on DD and TA. Thanks for your insight. Keep it coming.

Repost of today's great news...........
Hemi 2 Well Comes in at 68 Bbls Per Day and Increases Mature Wells Production
04/16/2007 09:45
Hemi's first new oil well (the Hemi 2) on the Reno lease located in Woodson County, Kansas, has Initial Production at 68 bbls per day. The oil pay zone stimulation process used to complete the Hemi 2 well has produced a more efficient and better producing well. This Initial Production is significantly higher than the results seen in the typical SE Kansas oil wells. The application of the information derived from the additional testing and completion techniques used on the Hemi 2 well will allow all new wells to be completed in a much more efficient and timely manner.
This important oil pay zone stimulation process developed by Hemi greatly increased oil production in its mature reworked wells, which were located within 1/2 to 1 mile from the new well, at the same time it was producing the first new well. Five mature wells that were producing approximately 3 to 5 bbls per day each have increased their baseline production to more than 5 to 8 bbls per day each.
There are also an additional eight wells that are in the process of being reworked within a 3/4-mile radius to the new well. Based on a test well production, Hemi's opinion is that this stimulation process will also improve each of these 8 reworked wells' oil production that will be baselined in bbls per day within less than two weeks. Hemi's process will increase production from 4 geological pay zones as multiple new wells are completed this spring on contiguous leases.
Hemi's extensive library of geological information about all pay zones in our area of southeast Kansas, and the testing information derived from producing our first new well, was used for the development of this process. The application of this process for new wells to be drilled on all five leases, which also have mature reworked wells and encompasses over 3 square miles in Woodson County, Kansas, will substantially increase total oil production from mature reworked wells.
The importance of being able to efficiently produce more oil per well at less cost per bbl from mature reworked wells cannot be over-emphasized. The blanket geological formations in southeast Kansas and the Humboldt-Chanute field will become more valuable pay zones using Hemi's oil stimulation process on leases with mature oil wells.
Hemi Energy Group is an independent crude oil and natural gas producer employing a unique business model capitalizing on technological advances to exploit mature fields with millions of barrels of proven oil remaining in the ground. Using attractive lease/royalty packages, Hemi has secured, in its history, tens of thousands of acres of productive domestic projects. The company's forward-thinking strategy has placed it in an enviable position at a time when prices and global demand for oil continue to rise.
Building on decades of experience in enhanced oil recovery, Hemi has successfully amassed a substantial and attractive portfolio of these high-quality domestic properties. By streamlining operations through cutting-edge technologies, Hemi has the ability to operate more effectively and efficiently than larger oil companies.

Does anyone else besides me work at a company like this??
The Americans and the Japanese decided to engage in a competitive boat race.
Both teams practiced hard and long to reach their peak performance. On the big day they felt ready. The Japanese won by a mile.
Afterward, the American team was discouraged by the loss. Morale sagged. Corporate management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found, so a consulting firm was hired to investigate the problem and recommended corrective action.
The consultant's finding: The Japanese team had eight people rowing and one person steering; the American team had one person rowing and eight people steering. After a year of study and millions spent analyzing the problem, the consultant firm concluded that too many people were steering and not enough were rowing on the American team.
So as race day neared again the following year, the American team's management structure was completely reorganized. The new structure: four steering managers, three area steering managers and a new performance review system for the person rowing the boat to provide work incentive. The next year, the Japanese won by two miles.
Humiliated, the American corporation laid off the rower for poor performance and gave the managers a bonus for discovering the problem....

OUTSTANDING NEWS ABOUT KANSAS!!!!!
About 10 years ago I lived in Kansas and worked for a company that did power line surveys and updated the maps of the lines and equipment.
I worked the area of SE Kansas and here is part of what is there.
During WWII there were literally thousands of wells sunk and plans were laid for more-->>evident by the maps that were not updated since WWII showing plans to extend the power lines to power new well heads. As a matter of fact, there were even small towns built for the workers that were demolished and erased from the map after the war. Teeterville is one such small town.
After the war, the pump heads were simply cut off at the ground and abandoned. Walking in the prarie, you can smell the crude odor coming out of the open pipes.
As for the gas, that is a closer to the OK border. I did sound for a band and we used to go to Chattaqua KS and play for their town fair once a year and you can see both oil and gas pipes along the highway.
If this is the are of Eureka KS south, that is a vast area for recovery especially and also new wells.
DAMN, been looking for an oil/gas company that was getting into SE Kansas and I literally stumbled into this.
GLTA
Very nice find. This looks to stretch into Kansas and involves more of the little O&G companies that some here are invested in. Thanks.
Oil prices rise, trade near $63 a barrel
Larger-than-expected decline in U.S. domestic gas stockpiles
Updated: 28 minutes ago
SINGAPORE - Oil and gasoline prices rose Thursday after the U.S. government reported dwindling domestic gasoline stockpiles in the face of unflagging demand.
Total U.S. gasoline stockpiles sank by 5.5 million barrels last week to 199.7 million barrels, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported Wednesday. Analysts had expected a 1.3 million barrel decline, according to a survey by Dow Jones Newswires.
The report spurred traders to extend their gaze beyond the short term to the larger picture, with unrelenting demand exacerbating already tight supplies, said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Alaron Trading Corp. in Chicago.
Refineries are struggling to keep up as production problems persist, while the typical slack in demand between the winter heating season and summer driving months has yet to materialize, he said.
“This is going to be a very interesting foot race between supply and demand,” he said. “Price seems to be no object for the consumer right now.”
Gasoline futures rose .13 cent to $2.1600 per gallon on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Meanwhile, alternative fuel ethanol hit a 7-month high, corresponding to an overall rise in gas prices since last August.
Ethanol futures rose 4.3 cents to $2.280 on the Chicago Board of Trade.
Light, sweet crude for May delivery rose 94 cents to $62.95 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude for May rose 22 cents to $68.06 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.
Tensions over Iran’s defiance of a U.N. Security Council demand that it cease uranium enrichment also supported prices, along with a warning from the International Energy Agency that OPEC production was at its lowest point in more than two years.
Oil prices have been volatile the last couple of weeks, gaining nearly $5 a barrel after Iran detained 15 British sailors and marines, dropping on their release last Thursday, and then sliding almost $3 Monday on expectations of oversupply at a key North American delivery point before slowly recovering somewhat.
In Paris, the International Energy Agency warned that output by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting countries had slid to its lowest level in more than two years on production outages and self-imposed cuts.
Still, a Platts survey of OPEC production last month said the average 26.54 million barrels pumped a day by OPEC members under quotes still represented overproduction of 740,000 barrels a day above the group’s production target.
In other Nymex trading, heating oil futures gained 1.13 cents, fetching $1.8860 a gallon, while natural gas prices rose nearly 1.5 cents to $7.870 per 1,000 cubic feet.

"Its Oklahoma-based founders spent decades in the natural gas and oil business."

There is an excellent story in the Investors Business Daily newspaper today about Arena Oil. I bring it up because the story is SO much like Hemi's. I encourage you to read it, I can't post it here since I don't want to infringe on copywrite or anything. Here is an exerpt:
How did a small firm started just six years ago get so lucky?
Its Oklahoma-based founders spent decades in the natural gas and oil business. They knew where to find, and how to extract, natural gas and oil in the area.
Also, Big Oil now mainly stay out of U.S. domestic oil production. They go offshore or overseas looking for much larger reserves.
Small and mid-sized firms like Arena are taking a fresh look at the oil fields that major oil firms first drilled decades ago.
Arena chose well. Though it also owns fields in Kansas and Oklahoma, most of its investment is in the Fuhrman-Mascho field in far west Texas and southeastern New Mexico. "They were very foresighted to establish their position there," said Philip L. Dodge, an analyst at Stanford Group Company.
So pick up a copy if you can...

The Kansas oil and gas industry is nearly a $4.7 billion industry that puts tens of thousands of people to work each day and pumps
hundreds of millions of dollars into the state’s economy each year, money that helps support families, fund schools, and build
roads. The Kansas oil and gas industry ranks just below agriculture as the most significant Kansas industry is terms of gross state
