Light Management Group Inc. -LMG- Announces Agreement to Supply Baylor College of Medicine with Ultraviolet -UV- Scanner For Evaluation in Division of Neuroscience
NORCROSS, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 2002--Light Management Group Inc. (OTCBB:LMGR - news; www.lmgr.net), developer of new applications in optical and light technologies employing sound waves, today announced it has entered into an Agreement with The Baylor College of Medicine (www.bcm.tmc.edu) in Houston, Texas to supply an Ultraviolet (UV) Scanner for testing and evaluation.
Under the terms of the Agreement, Light Management Group will supply The Division of Neuroscience at The Baylor College of Medicine with a UV Scanner and an Acousto-Optical (AO) Deflector for evaluation in an application involving the UV photolysis of ``caged'' neurotransmitters at random sites in a neuronal specimen.
The evaluation of the UV Scanner's performance will be under the scrutiny of Professor Dr. Peter Saggau, a specialist in advanced optical techniques for Neuroscience research. Dr. Saggau's work focuses on the development of fast laser scanning approaches including UV photolysis, confocal microscopy, and two-photon microscopy. Each of these approaches are aimed toward providing the improved spatio-temporal resolution required to answer fundamental questions about how single neurons process information in the brain.
``The UV Scanner from LMG could play an integral role in enabling scientists to program complex spatio-temporal patterns of input to nerve cells in the laboratory; this would allow us to study more directly the basic processes of dendritic integration and learning and memory than has been possible to date,'' said Dr. Saggau. ``By further considering how these processes are altered in pathological cells, we may gain valuable insights into the disease mechanisms of epilepsy and Alzheimer's, for instance.''
The UV Scanner System from LMG will be evaluated by The Baylor College of Medicine within the First Quarter, 2002. Upon successful completion of the evaluation process, LMG and The College will enter into discussions concerning the sale of the UV Scanner to The College.
The Baylor College of Medicine currently holds research grants and contracts totalling approximately $339 million. The College offers patient care services through many of its Texas Medical Center affiliate hospitals, providing more than 131,000 in-patient visits and nearly 2 million out-patient visits annually. The Baylor College of Medicine is the only private medical school in the Greater Southwest and is among the top 20 of the 125 U.S. medical schools in federal research funding.
The UV Scanner was unveiled at the Optical Society of America's Optical Fiber Communications Conference in Anaheim, California in March 2001. LMG also showcased its UV Scanner at the Conference of Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) exhibition in Baltimore in May 2001. This new Agreement with The Baylor College of Medicine represents one in a series of initiatives LMG is pursuing toward sales of the UV Scanner for research applications.
``Light Management Group is delighted to unveil what may well become the first commercial application for our UV Scanner in such a worthy pursuit as biomedical research including neuroscience,'' said Dr. Donald J. Iwacha, CEO & President, Light Management Group.
``LMG is pleased to collaborate with the academic community toward the advancement of further understanding brain function. We take great pride that our proprietary UV Scanner will play a practical role in supporting this important biomedical pursuit.''

Light Management Group Inc., (NASD-OTC/BB: LMGR), developer of new applications in optical and light technologies, today announced that it has entered into an agreement with The Boeing Company (NYSE: BA - news) to evaluate LMG's innovative acousto-optic switches for potential application to Boeing products.
Light Management Group's unique technology employs sound waves to manipulate light waves, thus yielding several distinct advantages over other all-optical technologies. LMG's acousto-optic switch operates at a speed of less than 5 microseconds, representing a 1,000-fold advantage over today's Micro Electrical Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology. LMG's switch, which can transform optical signals from one input channel to over 1,000 output channels, contains no moving parts and has performed over one trillion cycles entirely free of maintenance.
``Light Management Group's arrangement with Boeing represents a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of our acousto-optic switch,'' said Barrington L. Simon, CEO and Chairman of Light Management Group Inc. ``We look forward with great anticipation to the validation of our technologies through the scientific findings that will be derived from a company whose scientists and engineers have touched the lives of so many with their technology.''
A team from Light Management Group will work in tandem with a team from Boeing Phantom Works in assessing LMG switch applications. Phantom Works is the advanced R&D unit of Boeing that specializes in providing innovative, affordable technology solutions to the commercial, space and military business units of the company.
Light Management Group Inc. specializes in the development of new applications in optical and light technologies. LMG's breakthrough technology employs sound waves to focus and direct light. Last year, LMG filed for two United States patents in the fiber optics field, both of which could have significant applications in telecommunications, data transmission and Internet technology. Light Management Group is committed to fulfilling demands for multiple, complex levels of switching within the telecommunications industry.
