Re credit card debt being paid off: The authors did say that much of the financing to pay off the credit card debt may be coming from home equity loans. Don't abandon all end-of-the-world scenarios yet!
Frank, I appreciate the detailed explanation. Very helpful. Lord knows I can use all the help I can get!
Thanks again!
Frank, do you have a technical way to decide if the strong uptrend you like is too strong (as in parabolic)? Or is it a gut feel?
Defense and healthcare--EMFP is in both sectors. Update:
Emergency Filtration Products Progress Report
Thursday April 14, 12:30 pm ET
HENDERSON, Nev.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 14, 2005--Emergency Filtration Products Inc. (EFP) (OTCBB: EMFP - News) today issued the following progress report:
Military Initiatives
In September 2004, the company announced that it had been awarded a Prototype Development/Testing/Evaluation Grant by the Center for Commercialization of Advanced Technology to develop a testing protocol for filter media on behalf of the U.S. military. EFP commenced testing its licensed nano-enhanced filter media last year in conjunction with Edgewood Chemical Biological Center.
The original study funded by the grant comprised four protocols -- tests to evaluate the company's filter media efficacy against four different contaminants -- testing for which has now been completed. As a result of the successful completion of this testing, the company was requested by the U.S. military to test its filter media against a number of additional contaminants. This final phase of testing is expected to be completed in May 2005.
Immediately following the completion of the final phase of testing, and assuming the successful outcome of testing, the company expects to enter into partnership discussions with a number of DOD-approved filter manufacturers to develop product applications for the company's nano-enhanced filter media technology.
The U.S. military has previously identified over 1,000 potential applications for EFP's filter media technology. The company intends to work closely with the U.S. military and DOD-approved manufacturers selected by the U.S. military, to develop those applications that the U.S. military deems to have the highest priority in its strategic plans. The company expects to have its filter media in use by the U.S. military in late 2005, pending the successful outcome of final testing.
Itochu Techno Chemical
EFP has been working closely with Itochu Techno Chemical Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Itochu Corp. (see below), with whom it has a long-term distribution agreement, to market its Vapor Isolation Valve, Series One Breathing Circuit Filter and RespAide products into the Japanese market.
The company has already shipped a number of sample orders, and has modified its products -- at the request of Itochu Techno Chemical -- to conform to Japanese medical product standards. These modifications necessitated minor but time-consuming alterations to existing molds. As a result, this process has caused delays in the commencement of shipping commercial orders to Itochu Techno Chemical and its distribution partner, Senko Medical Instrument Mfg. Co. Ltd. EFP has now completed all of the modifications requested by its Japanese partners, and expects to initiate commercial shipments to Japan in the current fiscal quarter.
Additionally, Itochu Techno Chemical has expressed an interest in distributing the company's NanoMask product in Japan and those Pacific Rim countries that have been affected by the H5N1 virus, better known as the avian flu. EFP has also been continuing to work with Itochu to evaluate the possible distribution of the company's ELVIS product (see below) in Japan and the Pacific Rim.
NanoMask
The recent outbreak of the avian flu in a number of Pacific Rim countries, along with a World Health Organization warning that the H5N1 virus could lead to millions of deaths, has sparked a renewed interest in the company's NanoMask, a nano-enhanced 2H Filter environmental mask. Recently, the company has entered into a non-exclusive distribution agreement with 2H Distributors (http://www.2hdistributors.com/) and has introduced the NanoMask to a number of large U.S. corporations in the food and courier services industries who are interested in the NanoMask for internal risk management purposes. In addition, the company is currently negotiating with a potential distributor in the Middle East, as well as initiating discussions with several U.S. governmental agencies.
ELVIS (Emergency Life-Support Ventilation and Intubation System)
EFP has begun production of the molds necessary to produce ELVIS. EFP's ELVIS is a best-of-breed emergency resuscitation system with essential integrated features, including a patented medication/suction port, a self-contained nebulizer and a nano-enhanced 2H Technology(TM) air filtration system that reduces exposure to infectious agents. ELVIS will be marketed to the U.S. military, hospitals, police and fire departments and emergency response teams nationwide.
ELVIS has been endorsed by Catholic Healthcare West (see below) and the City of Los Angeles Police Department. The company intends to apply for fast-track FDA approval. Based on current indications of interest for this product, the company is planning for an initial production run of 10,000 units. The preliminary suggested retail selling price for the product is $24.95.

About Emergency Filtration Products Inc.
EFP (www.emergencyfiltration.com) is an air filtration products manufacturer whose technology provides filtration efficiencies of "greater than 99.99% at a particle size of 0.027 microns." Its initial products were developed for the medical market: the Vapor Isolation Valve(TM); RespAide -- a CPR mask used for resuscitation of respiratory/cardiac arrest cases; an A.E.D. prep kit; and the 2H Breathing Circuit Filter. Each has received FDA approval. EFP's 2H NanoMask with 27 nanometers filtration capability relies on the company's core 2H Technology(TM) filtration system, which utilizes a combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic filters able to capture and isolate bacterial and viral microorganisms with efficiencies of 99.99%. The environmental mask utilizes the company's patented 2H Technology(TM) and nano-technology to enhance the capture-and-isolation characteristics of the filter media. In addition to filtration products, the company also supplies Superstat, a modified hemostatic collagen, to the medical market and U.S. military for extreme wound care.
Safe Harbor Statement
This release may contain statements that are forward looking. Such statements are made based upon current expectations that are subject to risk and uncertainty. EFP does not undertake to update forward-looking statements in this news release to reflect actual results of and changes in assumptions or changes in other factors affecting such forward-looking information. The actual future results of the company could differ significantly from such forward-looking statements. Specifically, the selection of EFP products for testing does not guarantee that such products, even if successful in the tests, will be ordered by any branch of the U.S. military. In addition, even if orders are placed following testing, production of products will take some time and the orders may not involve significant sales to the U.S. military. Sales may be dependent both on the perceived need for EFP's products in the U.S. military and in the civilian marketplace as well as the competitive performance of such products in the marketplace. Finally, even if potential additional applications are identified, such applications may involve additional research and development prior to implementation.

If you think Sjuggerud is right, then the dollar going up may imply that it will go up against the Rand as well. If that's the case, maybe Slider will be right, and the South African golds may be a good buy around now.
Actual lyric: "The future's not ours to see..."
Is that better or worse?
Frank, what's your take on Anooraq now?
<China trip-wire. As long as they can pay, they are pushing the basic materials up. When the money will be gone, they could as well put men in uniform to get the materials <ng>.>
Probably another seven to ten years before the Chinese can throw their military weight around. Then, look out!
<I'm not so sure what happened to YELL will happen to TOL-- for one, the Fed is warning that they will increase the intensity of their tightening which may add some short term buying pressure in real-estate. The home builder may find themselves without that much feared inventory.>
Frank, at this point I think a lot of the home buyers are discretionary buyers speculating in second homes as vacation homes or for a quick turn-around. So I think the pressure will be on the sellers. Given my short position, that's what I want to believe, anyway!
AVL--what do you like about it?
Kastel, thanks for the private post. I'm a member on SI (Croesus1111) but not on IHUB so I can't respond in private.
Your Themistocles reference puzzled me for a minute; very amusing!
I like your Dylan quote.
I do recognize the personal shortcomings of some of those who set themselves up as gurus. But if they can help me make more money than they cost me, I can be very tolerant!
I like your idea of being long defense, healthcare and gold stocks. Even if the gold stocks haven't been panning out.
<I'll add them into my watchlist-- thanks.>
Hope you bought EMFP Thursday morning. Up 21% Thursday afternoon.
<If anyone has other suggestions for either hydropower or water purification, I’d be glad to hear them. Research on this one was a little disappointing.>
Richard Russell recommendations from November, 2004:

<So now how does that "housing bubble" cover on BusinessWeek work...? I mean if we're all aware of it, could it possibly continue...?>
In the financial markets, I would think that would be the probable outcome. But in the housing market, the big demand is not necessarily from people reading Business Week. It may be more from people reading USA Today.
I bought Jan '07 45 puts on HOV @7.50 and Jan '07 55 puts on RYL @ 6.90 about ten days ago.
Think it's a bad idea?
<I'm open to money making suggestions>
Still like Freewest, FWR.V. I'm still overweight long, thinking of buying more. It's climbed since I last posted about it here.
Check out EMFP, Emergency Filtration Products, a bulletin board stock. I like the long term picture. Small market cap. A big money operator recently bought at least ten percent of the shares on the open market, and paid prices as high as $0.48 (current price 0.43-0.45). No inside selling. Potentially very profitable agreements with the US military and a big Japanese multinational.
From swing trading point of view, if you can get it in the '30's it's always been very tradeable. Even better if you can get it in the 20's. But those days may be over.
Slider's recent posts indicate that he is straddling oil. He thinks it will be volatile, but isn't sure which way. Seems like an intelligent strategy to me.
"Anyway, not trying to get religious either way, it gets too expensive."
Well said!
Green golds: Don't forget Droopy, up 11%.
I saw either Greenspan or Volker (I think it was Volker) quoted as saying that one of the big errors made by the Fed in the mid to late 70's was to allow the gold price to rise, decreasing confidence in the fiat money.
Proving central bank interference in a market is not easy. But it would be easy for the Fed to suppress the price of gold if they wanted to, because it is such a small market compared to the currencies.
I can't imagine that they would be happy to see the price of gold rising more than it has in conjunction with the dollar falling relative to other currencies. Greenspan is not stupid, whatever else I think of him. It's not a good idea to underestimate one's opponents. I see no reason to expect him to repeat the Fed's admitted error of the 1970's. Therefore I expect that he is, and will continue to suppress the price of gold.
The "upside" of that price suppression is that we have thus far avoided the crushing corrections in the POG (but not in the junior PM stocks) like the one(s) seen in the mid '70's.
North American Palladium sold their production forward around the time when their stock price reached its peak. I believe that they hedged most or all of their production, and sold it forward at a price in the high 200's or 300's that was substantially lower than the price at the time, but is substantially higher than the current price. I seem to recall that their hedge position is close to expiring if it hasn't already, unless they've renewed it. I wonder if the decrease in earnings that will accompany the expiration of the hedge has been priced into this stock?
OK, so all the fiat currency is going to be trash. Gold prices are intentionally suppressed by the Fed, and they can do it for a long time, much easier than they can affect the currency markets, because the gold market is relatively tiny. Most of the commodities have already gone sky high.
What do you all think about silver and maybe palladium? Could silver detach from gold and fly by itself?
Re BNK and the big day on Friday: I can see a Morgan Stanley report generating a 21 million share day.
Frank, re FWR.V, talked to CEO Mac Watson on Friday. They have about 1.5 million in the bank. He wasn't specific about their burn rate. He expects the money to last until the summer, when they would like to do a PP, hopefully at much higher prices.
They have as a guess, about ten million warrents in the money at the 25-30 cent range.
They will be drilling the Sungold project when the ice breaks up in May, and should have some results within a few weeks from their start date.
From another source, the Sungold deposit is a volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) mineralization. Those do not necessarily turn into mines, but they are the source rock for some of the best mines in Canada, and may be located in clusters.
Watson guessed that they have a ten to fifteen million ton ore body, but it is only a wild guess because they have no idea how far the mineralization extends, particularly at depth.
Other people I have talked to seem to think that this will be a profitable deposit, and the only real question is how big it will be.
Frank, re BNK, did the Stock Traders Almanac say what they liked about it?
I feel stupid for having sold in the $1.30's--the financing was done for $1.15/share, and the financiers weren't spending thirty-five million to make twenty cents a share. Oh well, I shouldn't complain about a double...
Any ideas about where a good re-entry point would be?
Can the Almanac generate 21 million shares in volume on a given day? My take on this is that this was corporate buying--as in other oil companies taking positions.
BNK.V flying again. Up 28% on huge volume. I exited this one for a double a couple of weeks ago. Hope I can find a good re-entry point...
Re FWR.V:
"so yeah think there's more???"
I think so. Three active projects with better weather in Canada approaching should keep up a steady news flow. Don't know what it will do in the short term. I don't have any plans to sell at this point.
I know that Watson, the Pres. and CEO is very well respected and liked (formerly from Hemlo).
The results yesterday seemed outstanding, but I'm no mining engineer. The samples tested are pits blasted out of the rock. So it's early. But the anomaly does extend along 800 meters.
Regarding news, I'm thinking they will want to do a PP at a higher price. So they will do their best to acheive such a price before doing a PP.
I'm gonna try find the time to call them tomorrow to gage the mood, and find out more about their finances and outstanding warrants etc.

Still liking RNC @1.08 after reading their financial statements?

Any idea of the nature of their non-hedge derivative loss? Any idea if it's a one-off event?
I hope you didn't have Droopy like I do. eom
"I'll tell you this, stocks only go up only a 1/3 of the time, the other 2/3 an "investor" is subjected to insider selling. So in the end, you're left with the choice of betting on a competent group of criminals or an incompetent group of criminals."
LOL. Perfectly stated!
"How are you playing that?"
Any thoughts on Canico, CNI.to?
Frank,
Do you have an opinion on Hunter Dickenson as a management team? A number of people on SI have posted that they seem to take care of themselves and their buddies first, and the shareholders come in a distant third.
Louis,
Thanks for the aggregate open interest/price of gold chart. Beautiful correlation--it looks like it's in real-time. Do you see any leading indicators that might have predictive value? It would be sweet to find something that had that nice of a correlation, but was a day ahead of the gold price <g>.
