Yes, either prohibitive cost, or just in figuring out a way to mass manufacture the 3D nature of the panel. Or both! All in my humble speculation with the info given.
Things change, things evolve. They didn't go belly up, they didn't fold, Jim saw this coming and evolved the company into another (profitable) endeavor!
Yes, and I believe I was the one in the room when he said that. In front of a room of people, he admitted to having been overly ambitious originally as to how they might get it manufactured. (my words) His implication was that it was ready for fabrication stage, but they could not find a willing partner, nor, he also told, could other companies get around this obstacle with their attempts either. (SPWR) For me, there is no question that it exists. And they are attempting to take it further (manufacture)despite being stumped for the present. But the majority focus of SLTD was certainly sounding like it was on the installation for the time being. That presentation was March 25, 2015.
Hey you ain't off the hook yet, active duty until that leave is finished. And then its the inactive reserve for you pal! LOL
Congrats, from another retiree!!
Oh God, they have a prototype! Haven't we been here before? LOL
Would you take this boat to the Atlantic? Down the intercoastal waterway to freeload at Chiinkwai's mansion?
God no, I don't even own golf clubs! This is to travel to the mail box and to feed the chickens. Its my first rechargeable Electric Vehicle! Recycled too. (meaning second hand)
Well you sure have been through the ringer with wanting to get a boat. LOL Enjoy the thing.
I'm almost scared to suggest that I'm getting a golf cart! LOL
I don't think you are going to get boat money today, Nome!
I heard this on CNBC once, it stuck with me for some reason. (Full disclosure: I don't have a boat, and won't be buying one) The two best days when you have a boat are the day you get it, and the day you sell it!
Go rural, go cheap!
Yes you are right, there was quite a bit of talk about that over the weekend on the boards. Musk's cousins run SCTY. I believe that TSLA shareholders may not all want him to give away his patent info either, but that's a discussion for another day.
What he did by bringing out this battery now, is to generate not only a thousand articles in solar and tech geek media, but also newspapers and periodicals all over the world speculating on the matching of (his) batteries to solar panels. Whether or not its a success for TESLA, its a milemarker for solar growth history. Now we need our astute and competent CEO to make sure we ride the wave forward, not get jumbled up in the flotsam and jetsam of the tsunami!
GLTA!
Honestly, I think you may have a set of blinders on! Our product is not sold in a vacumn. We are at the mercy and whims of the market and other products out there.
But specifically, the Achilles heel of Solar has always been power storage, and power at night. Now that TESLA has attempted to confront that weakness with a professional intervention, it has changed the standards of the solar installation market. In the future, I don't believe anyone will even consider installing panels without batteries. It will become the norm, whether or not its TESLA's batteries. The businesses that SLTD and others have been focusing on to sell panels too, are companies that don't have a lot going on at night. Wineries, agriculture, recycling etc. Giving solar customers 24 hour service is a big dynamic and could be the next big thing!
If its at the beach! Here in Tennessee, theres too many dang trees to make 'cabins in the woods' a solar thing. However they make great fuel for wood fueled cooking!
LOL, and choose a matching color!
I'm not even close to being an electrician. The amps, the watts, the volts, its all magic to me. But I have to say that the first thing that struck me when I saw the new power wall, was "its too small" I like Markp's idea of using the small business model for the home, maybe that would have off grid capacity. Dollars starting to mount up though.
One thing that Musk has done, is to 'tidy up' the whole battery concept for alternative energy, raised the expectations, and fired up interest and education on the idea of off grid for many more people.
If they are to be exclusive to SCTY, that's bad.
As to your other earlier question, How long do the batteries produce power for? I would imagine that that would depend on how much draw/usage you give the battery to do. No?
Wow, I seem to have the scratched the surface of the eternal question. Do we have the responsibility to help ourselves first, or help others first. There is no correct answer. I will admit to trading with my money focused on me.
By being altruistic, Musk is helping solar stock holders (including us today IMO), and you and others believe, the world. I don't believe all TSLA stockholders will feel that way, many will for sure, but I think some will not. 'Nuff said!
I was/am speculating as to why the stock is down. I don't own TSLA. Open domain on the TSLA battery patent could help us, SLTD, and other solar panel and installation stock. Closed could hurt us. So I see it as good for us. On the other board, I speculated that the TSLA stock holders might be miffed or worse that he is giving away the battery. They, TSLA, developed it and others could now benefit hugely (financially) from the battery.
If that occurs, others benefitting, IF I was a TSLA stock owner, I might want take a recourse as my money helped other companies benefit. (There may be small print in the TSLA company that precludes that) I'm not trying to make a mountain out of a molehill, I just was wondering why, if its such good news for TSLA, the stock is down. Still, good for Solar and tangentially good for us!
Fair enough! And he just may, 'change the world'. And his products are a tad better for the world than an Apple phone!
Look, I'm not a lawyer, but the analogy for me is, if Jim gave away the 3D cell. The Cell that WE paid to develop. Would you feel good about that while others benefited financially from our R and D? I see potential for a class action from stockholders (TSLA) who are not OK with giving it away. Its not totally Elon's to give away in a public company. For us at SLTD, its good initially as it means there are potentially more batteries about.
Whoa, dude!! Welcome back!! The hood has changed since you been away. Not like you old school any more!
Thanks for the response. Too bad.
Anyone know if this has been resolved?
"whoever solves the battery problem will make millions" Jim Nelson on Fox Biz News (from my memory) Though the market is yawning at TSLA so far this morning. Maybe because it was a sloppy presentation. (What was he talking about when he said the giga factory was a product? Totally unexplained) And he also announced that the patent was open to anyone. Helps the movement, not the stock! How would we feel if Jim announced the cell being done and made, and now everyone could use and sell it and make their own!
"What me worry?" A. E. Neuman
I guess we all knew what was going to be announced, but I'm kinda stunned. If the product really produces as promoted, this should shoot just about ANY solar, 2D or 3D, through the roof. Did he get people listening around the world with this tonight? Delivery available for 3 to four months from now, and open sourcing of patents!
Thanks for putting that link up MarkP. I'm watching this boring bit now, waiting for it to start! Come on Elon, start the program!! LOL
Actually I do remember when we were "at" $8. For about one minute on the way up to $8.88, and then plummeting on down to the sixes. Visually, on the charts, its the true definition of a sharp spike. Considering that 90% (my estimate, I believe it could be higher) of those looking at the stock that day were frozen out their accounts, and unable to trade, its just not a real number to consider as true stock history.
I don't agree with you about "this thing being manipulated like a rag doll". Often we look for explanations or conspiracies to explain stock movements. Actually, its just the market, bouncing along creating ups and downs based on the all the input orders. We have a low float, therefore its a predictable that we will be volatile.
Been out all day, just logging on. Yes, in my recollection essentially you are correct. Though I have to say, that the implication was that it was a dynamic larger than a quirk. It seemed to be quite the problem. So much so, that they had gone over to Sunworks, and discovered they had a similar roadblock. There is just so, so much to interpret from all that. But thing initially to garnish, is that there is a cell, and its ready for manufacturing!
Edit: Make that SPWR, Sun Power, not Sunworks!
Long and strong with you! But of course, we won't know the numbers for this month, April, until August 15 or thereabouts.
Wow, that's a big list. Can you give a source or more info? Can you explain the level of 'manipulation', as in how? We can't call insulting a stock or its CEO twice a day manipulation, can we?
Once was a trader following Nelson,
who was tired of seeing all the sells on.
But the volume was low,
so the stock wouldn't go,
he had to wait for the stock to get bells on!!
Penny stock pro, thanks for the inspiration!
As you say, it ain't over yet! But also its a tough day for trading overall today. Low volume and sluggardly. I think we are doing well to hold as we are. The collapses we recently experienced after the slightest anxiety seem to be in the past. And I do believe we have a pre release rally to fire us up as well!
They just rehashed the PR from earlier. Which is good. So many write these things off as "just fluff", but they are ways of getting the company name and ethos out. Filtering into the minds of the people that read these things (not IHUB or ST!! Shock!). Its a slow, but good process. This presentation may not directly seem to help us, but it gets Jim's name and company logo on the schedule, the platform, in front of the eyes we want to have looking at us! Its all good promotion.
Well its a good article. Great effort. Is there any other rag that might accept it? You have already done the sweat. Wall Street Journal, Financial Times in UK,, why not?
LOL, you ever tried to go a half mile in midtown madhatters during the biz day? Good luck!
Wait until Friday after closing, OK.
LOL, who was the white knight at the close!!! See you all tomorrow, got to cut the damn lawn
Looks like maintaining that 1% for today is going to be a squeaker!
Its complicated! The price had a very short, very sharp spike to that number immediately after a reverse split. However, also as a result of the split, most stockholders using major US brokers were frozen in their accounts by their brokerages as part of the process. (Scottrade, Ameritrade, ETrade, etc etc) And so were unable to trade with normal procedures. Some were allegedly able to trade with telephonic assistance from their brokers, but there was not a quick method to do so, certainly (IMO) not enough to catch that price, or anything even close really. I do believe that most of the trading was by European holders of the stock, whose Euro brokers allowed them to trade, as stated by them on this forum. Personally, I don't see it as even being close to a real yearly high, the way you would normally interpret that statistic.
Its going to be a good solar summer, see you on the beach at Ostend!!
