OT...FEATURE/Over 70 Percent of People Want to be Surprised on Their Birthday, According to Proflowers.com Survey; Proflowers Uncovers How Busiest Birthday Month Can Be Cause for Celebration
Business Wire - August 04, 2004 11:39
SAN DIEGO, Aug 4, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Your loved ones may say they don't want a big splash on their birthday, but you better read between the lines if you want to keep them happy. A Proflowers.com survey released today found that more than seven out of 10 people actually want to be surprised on their birthday.
The survey found that 72.2 percent of respondents said they'd like some element of surprise on their big day. Surprise parties take the cake, with more than two out of five people (43.5 percent) actually wanting that very party they may say they don't want. A surprise gift in the form of cold hard cash came in close second, snagging 40.2 percent of the vote; and that dream vacation getaway stole third with a 33.8 percent nod.
"No matter what our family and friends may tell us, they really do want to be showered with that extra attention on their birthday," says Bill Strauss, CEO of Provide Commerce, which operates Proflowers.com. "And for many of us, this is a lesson learned just in time."
According to the National Center of Health Statistics, August has been the month with the most births in the United States since 1999.
"That just means it's high time for birthday surprises - whether you say Happy Birthday with a big bash, a long-awaited vacation getaway, or with a beautiful bouquet of flowers," says Strauss.
The Proflowers.com survey also found that more than seven out of 10 people (72.4 percent) feel very little stress or no stress at all about getting older. And more than 30 percent of respondents said the 30s represent "the prime of your life." The next best thing? According to the survey, it's the 40s (21.4 percent), edging out the 20s (20.6 percent) as the years people consider the best time to enjoy life. Average age of the survey's respondents? 44.
"Regardless of when people are born or how they are celebrating, this survey tells us that people are thinking and feeling young," says Strauss. "They're not stressed about getting older - and in fact, the perception of the ever-dreaded 'over the hill' mark seems to be coming later and later in life."
More Birthday Survey Results
-- More than one out of five respondents (20.2 percent) said a
spouse or significant other has forgotten their birthday at
least once.
-- Age 21 is the most important milestone birthday, according to
31 percent of respondents.
-- One in five people (21.6 percent) said they typically spend
$100 or more on a birthday gift for a spouse, partner or
significant other. On a family member or close friend, the
most popular range is $20 to $49 (55.8 percent).
To celebrate the biggest birthday month of the year, Proflowers.com has launched the August Birthday Bouquet, which is a hand-picked, hand-tied bouquet containing blue iris, red or dark pink royal lilies, clusters of ornamental grains and seeded eucalyptus. Consumers can order this and other birthday bouquets at www.proflowers.com or by calling 1-888-FRESHEST.
About the survey
This survey was commissioned by Proflowers.com and was conducted during the week of July 19, 2004. This online survey reflects a national sampling of 500 respondents aged 18 years or older.

WHRT...WorldHeart Announces First Implant in the Novacor(R) LVAS Reliant Trial for Destination Therapy
WorldHeart Announces First Implant in the Novacor(R) LVAS Reliant Trial for Destination Therapy
PR Newswire - August 04, 2004 10:46
OAKLAND, California, Aug 4, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- (NASDAQ: WHRT, TSX: WHT) - World Heart Corporation (WorldHeart or the Company), a worldwide pioneer in mechanical circulatory support systems, announced today that a 51- year-old man suffering from severe heart failure became the first patient to receive an implanted left ventricular assist system (LVAS) in the RELIANT (Randomized Evaluation of the Novacor(R) LVAS In A Non-Transplant Population) Trial for Destination Therapy. Dr. Richard N. Pierson III at the University of Maryland Medical Center performed the procedure in this landmark trial.
"I have had over 10 years of experience with the Novacor LVAS and several of my patients have been supported for over 3 years. The reliability and durability of the implanted device is critical in this indication. One of the primary goals of this Trial is to compare the safety and efficacy of the Novacor LVAS to the currently approved device for destination therapy. By presenting the Novacor as an alternative, I'm delighted to give my patients the opportunity to return home and enjoy living a normal life," said Dr. Pierson, Associate Professor of Surgery, Clinical Director, Heart and Lung Transplantation, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Maryland.
The RELIANT clinical trial will evaluate the Novacor LVAS, a pump implanted alongside the patient's own heart to take over a large portion of the workload of the natural heart, in patients with advanced heart failure who are not eligible for heart transplantation. Without LVAS support, these patients have a life expectancy of less than two years. Patients in the study will be assigned to receive either the Novacor LVAS or a HeartMate(R) XVE LVAS approved earlier for this indication. Data from this Trial is expected to support a Premarket Approval (PMA) Supplement for use of Novacor LVAS by non- transplant eligible patients (Destination Therapy).
"I have worked with the Novacor LVAS in both the laboratory and patients since 1987. I am pleased to see this powerful treatment for heart failure enter a phase in which it can be evaluated for its benefit in patients for whom heart transplantation is not an option. To have the University of Maryland be on the forefront of this life saving trial is indeed a pleasure, and indicative of our team's experience and capabilities in caring for patients with end-stage heart failure," said Dr. Bartley P. Griffith, Professor of Surgery and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Maryland.
The Novacor LVAS is an electrically powered, pulsatile flow device with 20 years of clinical use. It is the first ventricular assist device to provide a recipient with more than 6 years of circulatory support. To date, more than 1,500 patients have been supported with the Novacor, with almost 600 patient years of experience, and no deaths attributable to device failure.
Dr. Piet Jansen, WorldHeart Chief Medical Officer, commented, "It is an exciting time for the LVAS industry and for WorldHeart. Our goal is to provide outstanding therapy and we are pleased to partner with the University of Maryland, a nationally recognized institution. As many as 40 US centers will join the Trial and make this choice available to their patients."
About the RELIANT Trial
The RELIANT Trial randomizes patients who enter the Trial to receive either a Novacor LVAS or a HeartMate on a 2:1 ratio. Costs of implants, including device costs, for both Novacor LVAS and HeartMate are eligible for reimbursement by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and private insurers on the same basis as is available for reimbursement of HeartMate when used for Destination Therapy treatment outside the Trial.
About Novacor(R) LVAS
The Novacor LVAS is commercially approved as a bridge to transplantation in the U.S. and Canada. In Europe, the Novacor LVAS has unrestricted approval for use as an alternative to transplantation, a bridge to transplantation, and to support patients who may have an ability to recover the use of their natural heart. In Japan, the device is commercially approved for use in cardiac patients at risk of imminent death from non-reversible left ventricular failure for which there is no alternative except heart transplantation.
About World Heart Corporation
World Heart Corporation is a global medical device company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, with additional facilities in Oakland, California, USA and Heesch, Netherlands. WorldHeart is currently focused on the development and commercialization of pulsatile ventricular assist devices. Its Novacor LVAS is well established in the marketplace and its next-generation system is a miniaturized implantable assist device building on the proven Novacor technology.

DMXP...Delta Mining and Exploration Corp. Discloses Preliminary Gold Exploration Findings in South America
PR Newswire - August 04, 2004 10:30
LEWISBURG, Ky., Aug 4, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Delta Mining and Exploration Corp. (Delta) (Pink Sheets: DMXP) wishes to disclose preliminary findings on their Gold concessions in Bolivia.
The Robert concession controlled by Delta is roughly 3830 acres and is located approximately 50 miles by paved highway south of La Paz. The concession is located on the Altiplano alongside the Coniri fault at an elevation of 13,000 feet. The property is about 80% rocky outcrop or shallow soils with the balance of the land being covered by Cretaceous to Tertiary aged sediments. The large percentage of outcrop simplifies exploration and due to easy access and drilling conditions is quite cost effective.
The low hills exposed above the Altiplano plain are either Paleozonic sedimentary rocks and/or Miocene dacite rocks. The sedimentary rocks consist of thinly bedded shales (60%) and bedded sandstones (40%) believed to be of the Vila Vila formation. This geology provides a good indication for positive host rocks to gold mineralization in this region.
To date, a small number of samples have been collected from the dacite and have returned values of 0.333 g/t of Gold, 2.3% Lead, and 0.667% Zinc. The limited amount of exploration completed set in the context of the promising geology and the presence of successful producing mines in the area suggest that more detailed exploration is warranted.
The extensive experience of Dr. Barry Rayment and Stephen Kay in this region of South America in conjunction with their gold exploration and mining history will ensure Delta prepares and completes the appropriate work program while being considerate of the local culture.
With injection of capital expected over the coming weeks, a work program will be planned for this property together with the previously disclosed diamond exploration properties in both Montana and Bolivia.
Delta Mining and Exploration Corp., http://www.deltamine.com : is a mineral exploration company with an extensive portfolio of diamond and gold properties throughout the state of Montana, and in Bolivia, South America. Delta controls some 7,500 acres throughout Montana located within the Wyoming Craton where many of North America's diamonds have been found.
