There has definitely been activity on the UI patent, as recent as 12/10. I am hoping to see that one finished by January at the latest. However, there has not been activity on the MG patent since 10/28. Anyone have any ideas as to why all communication seems to have stopped regarding that particular patent? I looked at all the other patents, and once they hit "allowance" you can see that not more than a couple of weeks ever went by between activity. Im not "worried" per say, just curious as to why this might be.
And in regards to the one who posted the concerns that this technology was lacking in value due to other free technology being an alternative option, I'm not convinced they are trying scare tactics (and what would it matter anyway if you do truly understand the portfolio value). IMO, either the technology is not the same and cannot do the same things, OR, they are actually using the technology and are infringing upon VPLM's patent. In fact, why would Microsoft have applied for (and been denied) the same LI patent if the technology was free elsewhere?
The patents have value. How much, has yet to be determined. Has anyone else heard any rumors of an offer already being made?
Small Cap - Plus if you bought early this year, your taxes will reduce down to only 20% long term gains. (Short Term gains could be as much as 40%). I'm willing to wait for that extra 20%!!! Nobody ever said Christmas couldn't be celebrated in May :)
Surfer - Thanks for some clarification :)
What is HOD?
And I wish there were a "like" button here as on Facebook :) There's too many posters I just want to "like" :)
Surfer,
Can you give me a quick lay man's description of the meaning/importance of that data? I am not an educated trader (just a good long term investor :) and would like to understand this market a little more.
I want mine to say "Go Long!" :)
There is a strange thing I see on the Patent Transaction History... there has been no communications on either MG or UI since late Oct. Rarely had there been more than 2 weeks between communications between VP and the patent office before issuance of the other patents. Hmmm. Anyone have any theories regarding what that could be about?
Oops... meant a couple of week, not days, to receive
Thank you Nightrider2. I agree completely!
I don't see UI as taking any longer yet than the others previously. Actually it's gone through much faster overall than RBR which began with it's Initial Exam Team 4/09 (month/year) and didn't receive Allowance till 7/13, whereas UI began in 3/12 and was Allowed 9/13. And RBR took 1 week short of 2 months to reach issue stage, plus another 3 weeks to receive. If UI follows a similar path it should not be due for issue till the last week in Nov., then add the 3 weeks onto that for certification received. LI and 911 both took 2 months + 2 weeks to mail Issue and another couple weeks to receive.
MG is taking the longest. It began 1/11 and wasn't Allowed till 8/13 (reasonable time length). Following the other patents, this one should have been issued around mid to late Oct. and received around early Nov. But I can see there has been a lot more communication going on between them since the Allowance. MG should be on the cusp of Issuance. It could happen any day! Same with UI!! Then a couple of days to receive, putting us into mid Dec.
So like several others have said, my guess is we will not see anything significant until January, which is just fine with me as that's about my goal to move into long term gains :)
PS. The only strange thing I do see is that there has been no communications on either MG or UI since late Oct. Rarely had there been more than 2 weeks between communications before issuance of the other patents. Hmmm. Wonder what that's about?
V's,
I must apologize for the misunderstanding. When I replied to your post I was only referring to your "It aint over till it's over" comment by replying "Absolutely" and then inserted my own opinions afterward about stocks not having real gains or losses until sold.
The rest of the post shifted to general comments made by ALL posters previously, especially those who were panicking about the PPS and/or claiming that the board had a responsibility to inform us that everything was still ok. I simply felt, in my own opinion, that it was not the BOD's responsibility to hold our hands through this "game" we play as shareholders. Their job is to do exactly what they have been put in place to do, and I feel they are doing it to the best of their abilities (at least I pray they are). These were all simply my own opinions and not directed at any one poster specifically, especially not you.
Simply put, I respect your posts and agree with your position on the long term value of these stocks.
Amen Butters :)
Absolutely! At this point in time, NONE of us have "made" money or "lost" it, unless we've sold (which in my mind is probably a very small win, or unnecessary loss over the long run, because I believe this Portfolio will sell large).
Once again I say, the PPS has very little, to nothing, to do with why I bought into this company. It only comes down to, if you believe in the Product (I do)), and in the people who are managing the Product (I do), then you will hold strong, practice patience, and keep your eye on the horizon.
Regarding the comments on the BOD stepping in to say something or not, sure it would be nice. But honestly, I don't believe it is their "job" to babysit us shareholders. They have expressed their plans completely out in the open. They've opened themselves up to Level 2. They have said they won't do anything until the patents are in hand, and they dare not do anything to put those potential patents at risk. They just released another PR saying everything is still on track. We have no news otherwise that would lead us to believe anything otherwise. So why questions them over and over again, just to make us feel more secure. IMO the BOD is not wasting their time "playing the game" of PPS... they are banking everything on the sale. That is their ultimate goal. And I, for one, would rather have them putting all their focus on that rather than patting all of our little heads saying "There there. Hang in there. Everything will be alright." When, in fact, even if they did, there would still be those who would question their motives. We have the power to check the patents' progress. We have the power to check the BOD profiles and histories. They just explained in the last PR that the MG is taking longer due to trying to make sure it is as strong a patent as possible (my guess is that there were a few modifications tagged on at the end that need approving. Otherwise, the patent was "allowed". I cannot imagine they would do anything now to it to make it "disallowed". So it is simply a waiting game.
So again I ask... Do you believe in the Product (the value of the patents)? Do you believe in the quality and intelligence of the BOD? If so, stick with it. If not, bail out now. It's always YOUR choice.
This is the Stock Market people. A Game based on educated guesses and projections. If everything was guaranteed, everyone would play and nobody would really win. This game involves risk taking. If you don't have the stamina (or the money to risk), don't play.
re: "Additionally, the Company announced that the Board of Directors and management are continuing the process of exploring alternatives for monetizing their portfolio of technology assets, including a potential acquisition."
I know the CC implied, or pretty much said straight out, that it's Plan A was to sell the company/portfolio, however where there's a Plan A, there has to be a Plan B. Therefore, I do believe it is "possible" that the BOD could be reconsidering the possibility of doing this on their own, as was suggested before. Hmmmm... something to ponder. Would definitely take more time to grow the PPS that's for sure.
I just simply have to laugh at all the re-actions. Like it's been said... no bad news, strong IP, strong board, and no debt. What more could we all ask for?
In regards to the other site, no matter who put it up, I have to commend them for doing such a thorough job of detailing all the information in such a concise and easy to understand manner. I have been led to believe that they were either paid in stock, or the shareholder responsible liquidated stock to pay them, and therefore was not surprised by this drop in stock today. Either way, I do not believe this company was involved in any part of that "advertising". So... who cares who created the site? For those of us who are Long, it does nothing for us either way (except that it could possibly make it's way into hands that, unlikely, have not heard about this yet. who knows.) The PPS is not the important gauge here.
I am staying true to my heart/gut. I put my belief in this Board a long time ago. Unless THEY do something inappropriate, I will not worry, nor allow myself to panic. Let the PPS go where it may. Let the shorts have fun while they can. There are many ways to profit off of this venture, one is not more right than another. Keep greed and fear at bay, they never benefit the situation at hand. Those of us in Long need to keep in our minds everything that caused us to put our trust in this company/stock, and not allow unknown sources to "spook" us.
All is well in the world of VPLM. Breathe.... :)
If little ol me knows about them, I have no doubts that those "higher ups" know everything there is to know about these patents... or is trying to find out for sure!
This is a very strange, eery, day... hardly any movement all day..... are we in the Twilight Zone?
hahaha... EOL (end of laughter) :P
Well that's kind of redundant, don't you think? :) At least on a walkie talkie "over and out" has a purpose :)
Ok, I am finally breaking down to ask... I figured out all the other acronyms like IMO or IMHO, but for the life of me I can't figure out EOM??? :) Somebody please enlighten me :)
Also... RE the dilution. Were we not around 832M (I remember that from a month or so ago)? The board said in the CC that they did not expect that to get any more than 900M, I thought. I've been calculation all my returns based on the 900... just in case. They still look pretty :)
I'm with Coach29!!... there is absolutely no reason for anyone on this site to begin bickering over opinions and predictions. All of it is a non-reality at this moment. The ONLY thing we Longs can do is remain positive, (for those who pray, send out prayers that the board members remain free from fear, greed, anger, or any other negative emotions that could negatively impact this deal). I, for one, believe wholeheartedly that these men on the board are going to do what is best for the whole, shareholders as well as board members. Maybe that's naive, but that's how I roll :)
NYT, you do have a valid point in that this company COULD be run, probably, to the point where VP became the big dog, and yes, it would be more beneficial monetarily in the long run... however... it has been pointed out (and I feel made very clear in the conference call) that the boards #1 intention is to sell the portfolio/company. That said, it does not mean that they could not entertain the other option you suggested as a #2 possibility. But in the end, only the board would know that information right now, and it is no business of ours, at this point in time. Therefore, to argue anything we have no means of knowing, is pointless. In regards to the responses you have received here on this board, I have the feeling most people are into this stock more for the quicker big payout of a sell, rather than the slow growth of a big dog. I know I personally could use the money more now than over 20 years, to be used in another investment that is closer to my heart. This was a means for making some money, fairly quickly (though now I'm hoping for spring so that my investment becomes a long term... I'd hate for the payout to be 1 day before my initial purchase date and having had waited a year only to be shorted by taxes). I believe that may be why you have sparked some animosity over that matter.
That being said, no matter what this company sells for... for me as long as it's over 3 cents, it's a win. 500M would still be a BIG win for everyone on this board. Is it what we are all hoping for? Of course not! But let's not lose perspective here. We each are only invested in this as much as we are individually... which at this point is ALL less than $.20, so anything more than that, we walk away ahead. Yes, we're hoping this is the "game changer" (I know I certainly am... for me as well as for the many I know could REALLY use the money that can be earned (won) by this investment.) Remember, none of us have had to "work" for anything that comes of this (except for the board whom I am sure will be handsomely rewarded for their quality work). We have all been brought to this investment through a variety of ways, but none of it involved hard work. We have put the fate of this investment into the hands of a few extremely qualified men in the hopes that they will do their absolute best for ALL of us. I had a really good feel as I was listening to the CC... not just "what" they were saying, but "how" they said it. I trust them, as I think you should all too.
In regards to the comment about the 500M.... I back up (was it Nightrider?) saying that they only said "in their opinion" and "IF Malik felt there was no better option" that he (and the rest of the board, whom I am just assuming that together they must own more than 51% of the shares... maybe I'm wrong) would accept whatever they felt was the HIGHEST they could get. Honestly, I don't think what the rest of our votes are really going to have any bearing... nor would I want it to, simply because NONE of us know what has been going on behind the curtain! That's kind of like people voting for president without any true knowledge of what's going on within the white house/congressional walls. We'd be voting for selfish reasons without ever knowing the entire picture. We have no idea what may have come up in their many discussions (which I am sure they are having currently). As I said... this board is in place to do the best thing for everyone, IN MY OPINION, and our only option now is to allow them to see it through.
In closing... though I enjoy seeing everyone's predictions, opinions, and knowledge shared here, I honestly think we should spend our time thinking positive... having high hopes (I'm not ashamed to be HOPING for $25B or more), but OPEN to receiving whatever shows up. If that's 500M, 2B, or WHATEVER, and trusting that that was the BEST offer we could have gotten. Even if the whole thing fell through, there is no fear for me since I did not invest anything I couldn't afford to lose (and what a ride I would have paid for!). But MOST LIKELY, no matter what the final bid is, we will ALL walk away with a smile on our face (or we should)... for this is, IMO, history in the making. And I for one am THOROUGHLY enjoying the ride!!! :)
(Sorry this was so long... I'll step off my soapbox now.... NEXT) :)
My personal feelings are, and always have been, that I am banking this investment on the company/patent portfolio and their potential value, not the stock market. Whether they sell or take on the big dogs in infringement lawsuits and such, I decided the moment that I got in that I would ride this out. I got in at such a low price that it really didn't cost much to get into it pretty heavily. I have never played in the stock market myself (I can remember my father dabbling in it when I was a child), and I always HATED the idea of shorting, or day trading, as I saw that more as gambling (at least for me anyhow as I do not understand the system... it all works too fast and dry for me), and my ex loved day trading... hence, my ex. Therefore, I refuse to get scared, and will continue to wait this out patiently (even though I have great plans for my proceeds and am anxious to get started) until such time that my sources tell me to get out, or a check arrives in my account. :) Peace to all of you and may the rewards from this endeavor soar! :)
A watched pot never boils :) I have to back off sometimes and stop hovering over the numbers and just trust and allow the process to happen :)
It would all depend on what your ROI is, when you bought in, and what plans you have for the money after earned. There are many ways, I believe, to reinvest/hide your money, though I'm am not educated in them. I, for sure, will be paying a visit to my financial advisor.
It is only short term if the payout less than 1 year from your buy in date.
But I will say... I HOPE we are all in the highest income bracket :)~
From what I understand, this company has a negative past experience in getting involved with someone with questionable qualities. Once they realized it they backed out and severed ties. Accusations were made and the chill was placed on them. But this was WAY before the new board was put into place. There was talk about working to lift the chill but I am guessing that it took a backseat to the real agenda of getting this patent portfolio/company sold.
The person who is posting that information is either misinformed of the current situation or simply using past, inadequate, information in order to scare people into letting go of their stock. Why? I don't understand. Maybe that's the way they force the PPS down so they can get in low... I'm educated in many things but not how the stock market works in detail. My guess is it's a scare tactic based on the prior post by the same person. Just my opinion.
But you have to add those earnings to any regular earnings and you are then taxed at that new bracket. Therefore, if the earnings added to your current income brings you to say $190,000, as a single person, you are taxed at 33%. If it only takes you up to $180,000 you are at 28%
Brackets for single are as follows:
25% on taxable income over $36,250 to $87,850, plus
28% on taxable income over $87,850 to $183,250, plus
33% on taxable income over $183,250 to $398,350, plus
35% on taxable income over $398,350 to $400,000, plus
39.6% on taxable income over $400,000.
Married:
25% on taxable income over $72,500 to $146,400, plus
28% on taxable income over $146,400 to $223,050, plus
33% on taxable income over $223,050 to $398,350, plus
35% on taxable income over $398,350 to $450,000, plus
39.6% on taxable income over $450,000.
For the year 2013, there is a new top tax bracket of 39.6%.
Also for 2013, there will be an Unearned Income Medicare Contribution Tax of 3.8%
that applies to net investment income for taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income
exceeds $200,000 (for single filers) and $250,000 (for married filing jointly).
Thus taxpayers in the highest tax bracket will face a combined 43.4% marginal tax rate on their investment income.
oops... Pisces :D

Horoscopes
Not that I've ever been a huge follower of horoscopes (my husband is) but yesterday I decided to do some digging on a whim, and ironically all of the readings state that my financial house is going to take a huge leap starting next week and continue through till March/April. They all said this in one way or another... I simply found that quite intriguing :) 2013 was said to be a good financial year for me (which so far has been true) with the ending being especially good! I figure it can't hurt to go with these thought (I haven't been foolish and bet more than I'm willing to lose).
If you build it, they will come :) Belief has a strangely powerful energy to it. Feel the Excitement!!!
I continue to pray that all those leading, and dealing with, this company be freed from any greed, fear, or any other negative energies, and that they all do what is BEST for all involved: the customers, the companies, and their shareholders. :)
I thought they started the application process 10 years ago? That would put them as applying earlier than 2005. I took a wrong turn and am currently lost and confused :) Anyone care to point me in the right direction? :) In the meantime, I'll have to backtrack a little and do some quick research.
NYT
My guess is that the mention of infringers also reveals names of who could be at the table currently, thus the need to cover all bases of safety regarding non disclosure. They can't remove just one name without being obvious, therefore the removal of all names was a smart choice. Notice that the names are "still out there" even though the legal document eliminated them... strategical move?? Hmmm.
I am noticing T-Mobile has become very confident in the announcement of their "no data charges as of Oct. 20th". Another Hmmmmm.....
Smcluke,
Good positive turn of perception :) It's like holding that almanac that Marty stole from the "future"... do you sell it, or hold onto it and use it to play your cards down the road. :) I'm excited! AND I get to enjoy the PPS ride without fear of the drops because it's all part of the game and I can visualize the game end (just can't see the exact score) :)
nyt,
I think what it ultimately comes down to is that anybody who truly "knows" the answer to that question (and many others that have been posted here) probably cannot respond to it or risk violating the non-disclosures that I am sure are currently in place. The law is very tricky and it's always better to be on the safe side. I don't believe you are going to get the answers you are looking for, though I agree it would be nice to know. My bet is that the law firm "highly suggested, for whatever reasons, that they be removed. But that too is just my own reasoning. Therefore, all any of us can do right now is be patient. They will disclose information when it is safest to do so, IMO. It is an extremely qualified board, trust them. It's the only thing we CAN do right now, either that or bail. I choose trust.
Meanwhile, I am simply spending my energy dreaming high with zero expectations. I've actually worked up a spreadsheet that shows exactly what my ROI would be at whatever the purchase price is... I have it set at a $25 Billion sale :) I figure, put the thoughts out there and see what "shows up". Whatever shows up will be perfect for our ultimate needs. And dream about all the wonderful things you will do with your earnings and really "feel" how that will feel when it happens. Don't allow anyone on this site, or anywhere, to ruffle your feathers. Stay positive and happy... this is a dream stock coming true :) Enjoy the ride!!!
And about the tax... that's exactly what I thought. Therefore I'm hoping the payout waits until February... I bought most of my shares before then :)
Regarding the post with tax questions... this is how I've come to understand it. Short term gains are any investment profits earned under a year. Once at a year they become long term. In AZ (and I assume many if not most states as I believe capital gains are only federally taxed), a short term gain is simply added to your current income and you are taxed at whatever bracket that brings you to. Then you also have to add the 3.8% Unearned Income Medicare "Contribution" (interesting wording). I believe the highest tax bracket is 39.6% for over $450K married ($400K single) so the most you will pay for a short term gain is 43.4%.
Once the year has passed, however, the amount you are taxed on that drops to 20% (still plus the 3.8%).
The one thing I am still unsure of is, if you don't take it out of your brokerage account, is it considered a gain? I believe if you have losses you can write those off against your gains. But not sure how "re-investment" works exactly.
