Summary
Sphere 3D is a virtualization technology solution provider offering a number of new and patented virtualization technologies such as Glassware 2.0™. This revolutionary platform delivers virtualization to some of the most demanding applications in the marketplace today; making it easy to move applications from a physical PC or workstation to a virtual environment either on premise and/or from the cloud. Sphere 3D’s V3 Systems division supplies the industry’s first purpose built appliance for virtualization as well as the Desktop Cloud Orchestrator management software for VDI. Sphere 3D recently announced its proposed merger with Overland Storage (NASDAQ: OVRL). This alliance is intended to bring together next generation technologies for virtualization and cloud coupled with end-to-end scalable storage offerings enabling for the introduction of a number of converged solutions.
My current focus is utilizing my experience within the healthcare vertical to develop and improve upon partner relationships and focus on the integration of Sphere3D virtualization-based products into the clinical applications and workflow of our healthcare partners. By bringing together experienced professionals from S3D, our clinical partners are creating new and economical workflow solutions for the distribution of their legacy clinical applications to the end user that allows them to access to secure PHI, along with clinical and imaging applications anywhere, on any devise and at any time to improve patient outcomes.
not sure if this has already been posted, but it was invigorating listening to this 2012 round table discussion for Dell Enterprise Strategy chaired by Michael Keen. Also at the table and very insightful is Simon Bramfitt.
The topic was IT convergence and had representatives from a number of different enterprises... Dell, Nutanix etc
Although its 2 years old and quite long, it seems a lot of the discussion is still relevant today... worth watching imo

interesting to read how the company describes their technology in the recent f-4/a filings on page 206 and 207
here it is presented in point form
- Sphere 3D is a technology company that delivers an application virtualization platform aimed at extending the life of software indefinitely.
- Sphere 3D’s technology enhances the user experience of both legacy and current applications and empowers users to gain access to these applications from devices of their choosing.
- Over the last five years, Sphere 3D has designed a proprietary platform, namely Glassware 2.0™, for the delivery of applications from a server-based computing architecture.
- Through the creation of Glassware 2.0, software is made available from a central location irrespective of the device that is accessing the software.
- Legacy software can be run using Glassware even if the operating system and the machine upon which it is run on is no longer sold or supported.
- Software publishers, who invest millions of dollars to write software code, can be assured that their software can be utilized for as long as it is required.
- With Glassware 2.0, new software released by publishers will be driven by new feature sets rather than the next release of the original operating system (“OS”) upon which the software was written.
- Sphere 3D has taken a unique approach in that it has built its technology platform without the use of a hypervisor and instead has designed its own microvisor.
- This required Sphere 3D to design Glassware 2.0 without resort to layers of OS programming code. With the removal of the OS, Glassware 2.0 did not connect to hardware so additional code was written to access that hardware directly.
- Glassware 2.0 has a series of different emulators within its design so that any device can access a wide array of applications that sit on top of Glassware 2.0.
- This process is fundamentally different from other software that approximates the feature sets which management believes results in a quantum leap in functionality and a significant decrease in cost.
- One of the additional benefits of this approach is the ability to deliver multiple application sessions on either a single server or through clusters of servers without the requirement to deliver complete virtual desktop Infrastructure technology.
- Through Glassware 2.0™, the process for “porting” and “publishing” applications is streamlined to the point that it is practically automated, requiring very little administration input.
- Sphere 3D’s technology eliminates the complexity associated with planning, implementation, licensing and support of virtualization and Cloud migration while expanding the ecosystem of applications available to users.
- Additionally, Glassware 2.0™ architecture and unique “application only” virtualization, coupled with complementary software and hardware designs from its recent acquisition of the VDI technology of V3 Systems (as described below), enables Sphere 3D and its partners to deliver flexibility within the industry and a wide array of deployment options.
with discussion on application concurrent sessions at Dell World, its worth going back to

where JM discusses how Glassware achieves better application performance because
yes that confirms who Kris Applegate is.
here is a further interview with Kris at Dell World discussing Dell Solution Centres that are being setup around the world to allow companies to test cloud solutions before they purchase.

Interesting second interview with Peter Bookman on TrueBittv. This one discusses Glassware and backup (apologize if already posted).

thanks strut1702, yes it would need to be confirmed by Kris himself to be 100% sure.
Nice to see the new V3 converged appliance is attracting attention in Singapore
Kris Applegate on twitter
as per Peter Bookman's interview on the Cube
Dell + Google + Sphere cooperating for Chromebook solutions in education
Why Glassware ?
1. Legacy applications
2. high density of concurrent users
delivered to Chromebooks by Glassware from a Dell VRTX server
thx brucethepotter, here's the link to the youtube video.
Peter does a super job
Sorry forgot to link Simon Bramffit's quote
The number of concurrent users is interesting because the higher the density the lower the TCO, and thus a competitive advantage.
This was from Sphere's first press release in 2010

Seminar to be presented by Nilesh Patel at IP Expo
Apps, Data and Desktops protected, managed and delivered – Any Place, Any Device
Seminar Synopsis:
Virtualization has matured but it has also built up many layers of complexities. The traditional solutions are stretched even further in the new era of mobility and cloud. The IT buyers in this new era demand decentralization of infrastructure, and small scalable building blocks that are inherently secure. They want apps, data and desktops protected, managed and delivered anywhere, in any place and on any device- Without limitations and definitely without an infrastructure bloat.
Overland Storage, along with Sphere3D, brings breakthrough containerized software technology delivered via purpose built, drop-in-ready hyper converged appliances for desktops and apps delivery on private, public and hybrid clouds. Combined with a scalable, software-defined storage infrastructure, customers can now build an end-to-end solution from apps and desktops that is securely delivered at any place on any device to the data storage solutions that are inherently protected and scalable to meet the stringent of IT requirements.

Don't forget we also have a major relationship with VMWare (V3 vdi) and no doubt we will be using this to leverage sales of our own products. And for customers that already have a relationship with VMWare, V3 can easily slot in, especially distributed organisations for example to deliver faster desktops/workstations along with all the advantages of DCO 2.5. Once we have a foot in the door, Glassware and other products can be introduced. Will be even better once we have a combined V3/Glassware appliance, which they hope to have later this year or early next year.
microVM's (containers) + VM's (hypervisor VDI) = Glassware + V3 = best of both worlds
+ overland storage/backup solutions = best of all worlds :)
thats great...thanks!
I thought we were going to be at Barcelona as well, but according to PB thats not the case. See twitter
yes bare metal.. not only on the server, but anywhere across a server stack.. all fully automated.. courtesy of the microvisor.
and not only "bare" metal, but what about the "bare" minimum. As JM pointed out at the briforum presentation
3 services per application
Now thats light weight !!
What about you..Docker??
Not sure what their plans will be for branding.
Remember, Overland hasn't even begun marketing Glassware on its website yet. Will be interesting to see the marketing after the merger and the companies have had a chance to integrate. Lots of exciting possibilities.
This is interesting
Global Distributions FZE will be at http://www.gitex.com this month

I assume they will showcase the new V3 hyper-converged appliance
60K for the V100!!
Lots of money sloshing around in this part of the world :)
What are the odds of V3 hitting its performance target under the purchase agreement :)
but can Docker be administered by the desktop guy? :)

Global Distributions FZE's global reach

ThIs year IDC produced a report that describes a new wave in technology development and called it the "Third Platform"
"IDC Predictions 2014: Battles for Dominance — and Survival — on the 3rd Platform"
http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=244606
(Costs $5 but worth a read)
Interestingly, Eric Kelly was interviewed recently
http://www.twst.com/interview/30376
(this one is more expensive $75)
and noted that a leading tech industry analyst in a discussion with IDC, recently referred to what Sphere/Overland are doing as the "third platform". They expected next-generation platforms to emerge from a big industry player, not Sphere/Overland.
Does anyone know who that "leading tech industry analyst" might be??

remember, we have a foot in the door with Adobe for cloud video editing
http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/solutions/broadcasting/pdfs/Overland-Empress-Archiware-Anywhere.pdf
As Michael Keen said at VMWorld... why not take the apps off vSphere and use Glassware?
Yes.. why not :)
Chris Mellor is a respected storage journalist. He is a natural skeptic and thus his articles need to be read in that light. He has not tested Glassware. He does point out that "maybe" things about to turn around for Overland with Tandberg and and now the Sphere 3D merger....
In his own way, hes saying keep an eye on it :)
jmo
yeah sorry, what I was trying to convey was that V3 and Glassware are not currently being used in Adobe's video anywhere ecosystem, but it could be.
The ecosystem is currently using vmware for virtualisation. This is an on-prem cloud solution and perfect for V3 and Glassware. Glassware could be used to virtualize adobe video editing software for example.
This would be a very lucrative market and we already have one foot in the door :)
thanks for that fantastic feedback!
this is more about Overland storage products than Sphere 3D but it does highlight the fantastic opportunity we will have as a combined company and validates the quality of Overland hardware & intellectual property, as well as the quality of customer they deal with.
http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/solutions/broadcasting/pdfs/Overland-Empress-Archiware-Anywhere.pdf
And looking at the architecture in the diagrams, its not hard to see that this would be ideal for V3/Glassware to slot in and use their virtualization technology for parts of this ecosystem. Not Glassware/V3 yet, but in the future ???
