Oil and gas news summary: Range Resources, Solo Oil, Tethys Petroleum, Silvermere Energy, US Oil and Gas, Genel Energy
Range Resources (LON:RRL, ASX:RRS) and Red Emperor Resources (LON:RMP) were among the most followed stocks in the oil and gas sector this week after providing an update form their closely followed exploration campaign in Puntland.
The two companies said the Shabeel well in Puntland, Somalia has indicated oil but more test work was needed, while drilling in Trinidad had gone well so far.
The Shabeel well, which is being drilled by Horn Petroleum, was at a depth of 2703 metres and had just completed the setting of the 9 5/8" casing, Range said on Thursday.
At a depth of approximately 1660 metres, a 355 metre section of Upper Cretaceous sands and shales of the Tisje/Jesomma Formations exhibited both oil and gas showed and a potential pay zone of between 12 and 20 metres.
“Attempts to sample formation fluids using a wireline formation tester were not successful and the zone will require cased hole testing to confirm whether they areoil bearing,” Range said.
At a depth of 2015 metres, a thick section of tight limestone and shales was encountered and extended to the present depth of 2703 meters, which is believed to correspond to the Upper Cretaceous Gumburo Formation, Range said.
The firm added that the forward plan with Shabeel will be to drill ahead to the originally planned depth of 3800 metres to evaluate the primary and secondary reservoir targets in the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic intervals equivalent to the main productive section seen in the analogous fields in Yemen.
Separately Range Resources said that three rigs are now operational in its 21 well drilling programme on its Morne Diablo acreage in Trinidad.
A fourth rig is set to join operations this month and will target target the Middle to Lower Cruse sands to a depth of circa 6,500ft which have the potential to produce in the range of 150-300 bopd.
Work is also nearing completion on the reprocessing of its 3D seismic database in Trinidad, Range added, which will enable it to target deeper drill targets more accurately.
Barney Gray, an analyst at Old Park Lane Capital, said Range is making good progress on its programme in Trinidad.
“A string of successful well results in the shallow formations indicates that production will exceed 1,000 bopd within the next few weeks.”

100 Billion Barrels of Oil in Somalia, the Actual Value | Intelligence News, The Intelligence Report
Oil and gas has been found in Somalia leading to a wild scramble for Somalia, particularly with the British government shifting its military assets focus to Mogadishu.
The value of these oil deposits are estimated to be 100 billion barrels of oil, an amount large than what Kuwaiti has.
The value of oil in Somalia is immeasurable, Africa Oil finds in Puntland quantify this perspective
Africa Oil is expecting to start oil production in Somalia’s northern autonomous enclave of Puntland in a few months to come.
If this is successful, Somalia will become the seventh largest oil producing nation.
Already British Petroleum BP, has been appointed as a choice strategic partner by Somali officials.

Al-Shabaab Crumbles and Defects in Puntland
The armed fighters in Puntland’s Galgala hills have been undergoing a massive series of defections the past few weeks, losing officers and other key personnel to Puntland State security forces. This week, the largest-yet loss of manpower has befallen the Al-Shabaab divisions based around the oasis town of Galgala.
Earlier this week, a group of heavily-armed men turned their weapons into Puntland authorities and pleaded for immunity. This has been the trend ever since the leader of the Galgala militants, a weapons trafficker known as Said Mohamed ‘Atom,’ pledged his organization’s allegiance to Al-Shabaab and the wider Al-Qaeda network.
Atom’s supporters, many of whom were local clan militia with personal grievances, have lost confidence in the organization, which they now view as fighting a never-ending parochial battle. Local and state authorities said that an immunity deal still applies, and that when peace is forged, the displaced people of the region will be returned to their homes in Galgala.
The traditional elders of Galgala and the surrounding areas all back the Puntland State authority and have pledged their own sons to fight the militants. Residents of the region, as well as displaced natives near Dissident Nation sources in Bosaso stated that they are expecting an imminent collapse of the Galgala insurgency.

Somalia Oil Reserves Bring’s in British
SAS to the Cusp
By David James
Strategic Intelligence News
March 20, 2012
Intelligence on Somalia oil discoveries prove Somalia has some of Africa’s largest oil reserves buried beneath its sands.
According to Strategic Intelligence News, Somalia’s oil reserves, onshore and offshore, is roughly 110 billion barrels of oil and this might spur more conflict than peace.
Recent oil discoveries in Somalia are turning Somalia into an arena of diplomatic courtships with South Africa the latest player pledging to open an embassy in Mogadishu.
Britain recently opened diplomatic ties with the weak federal government of Somalia after decades of conflict in the militant country.
Oil discoveries in Puntland and the recent deployment of British special air services commandos to provide security and intelligence to exploration and oil rigs construction signals a new scramble for the oil pie.
Oil in Somalia was reported after the February London forum on Somalia with the Somali premier pledging oil for economic development deals with countries offering help.

Large potential ‘upside’ to be imaged in greater detail with high resolution 3D seismic surveys.
• Block PUT – 6 100 Km2 (Q1 2011)
• Block PUT – 7 250 Km2 (Q2 2011)
• Typical well productivity in basin ranges from 4,000 to 8,000 BOPD with pressure maintenance by water support
• Oil in Putumayo producing wells is ‘light’ – typically 26 to 32 API (29 API on average)
• PCR acreage is close to existing pipeline infrastructure – discoveries can be brought online in relatively short time frame.

hi rangers, where are we going today? well ive been predicting a higher platform for the last few months for the benefit of the sp on a positive shab result, i thought things were proceeding along the right lines with the gradual 8 to 16p rise then soon into the 20s, until the placement was surprisingly announced last week, its seems that 12p ish will be now be revisited circa 27th - randomly convenient for the US listing too.
with aoi stating drilling will cease before this month is out theres little time for corporate games to be played - halleluyah - its high time rrl was let loose im sure the relative sp boosting components are in place.
once announced successful [very hopeful given the updates and placement] im sure some of the withheld news will be used to both maintain and improve the sp - in complete contrast to rmp who will peak on the spike maybe subject to a placement re off shore and still may not participate, they have no further news except geo spud or next punty drill, its not difficult to envisage an exodus upon a successful result - good buy though mid 30s imo. Heres a few bullet points that will keep rrl's sp bouyant

Morning All,
Just wanted to post something uplifting. Sure, the SP drop is not appreciated from a profit point of view but from a TA point of view, its a good thing. The RSI is resetting itself to allow a fast and strong movement upwards and secondly, the SP at 12.5 definitely means that the price channel we were in has broken to the downside.
This means that a new price channel must be created - this can either be a new channel based on the current angle of movement downwards or it can mean that the upper channel will soon be breached and will act as support. (and given the anticipated news, I know which one I reckon)
My guess is that the SP will be below or at 13p into tommorow and then we will see a very rapid movement to 16 or 16.5 and then a new channel will be established.
Panic not - whatever they do with the SP today and into tommorow.

Nice one TF, good point on the bullish engulfing combined with Friday's to make a nice hammerstick. Knowing you you've probably done good business on it this morning? ;) I was a little surprised how relatively long we dwelt in the lower 12s this morning, unless it was deliberately 'held' there for some purpose, a bit longer an equilibrium than we usually see on such dips, particularly given the placing price was presumably the technical target. I'm assuming that with it being a little below the support line, the price being dropped there first thing caused a load of sells seeing that as support breached... the 2m sell(s) and some big 500k, 750K DMAs on the ask side sacrificed to the AT monster. Rapid rise perhaps fuelled by some of those scrambling back in, though the volume doesn't quite stack up.

Somali Envoy Accuses Western Nations of Resource Greed
Somalia’s Envoy in Egypt Abdullahi Hassan Mahamud today accused the United Nations and the Western world of only intervening in Somalia to profit from the nation’s plentiful and under-exploited resources. He additionally pointed the finger at the Arab states, whom he is sent to delegate with, for allegedly watching Somalia’s suffering and doing nothing substantial to support the broken nation and fellow Arab League member.
He stated that while some Arab states stepped up to support Somalia in its twenty-year struggle, the majority did not pay mind at all. The envoy additionally added that he sat down with many Arab leaders but few had any genuine thoughts on the issues in Somalia, with most waiting for the American protocol instead of taking action on the war-torn state’s grievances.
Hassan also accused the United Nations of not doing its job as a humanitarian organization, and said that the recent London Conference on Somalia was not about genuine care for Somalia or its people, but rather an opportunity for Western nations and their firms to exploit the nation’s oil and mineral reserves.

Puntland Leader Hosts Dinner for Traditional Elders
Yesterday, Puntland president Abdirahman Faroole hosted a dinner for the state’s highest-ranking traditional elders, including the customary leader, or ‘Isim,’ of his own clan in Puntland’s presidential compound in the capital Garowe.
This dinner was held for the state’s most prestigious elders, and was attended by Puntland’s highest-ranking political figures. Present among government heads were Abdisamad Shire, the vice president, Abdirashid Mohamed Hirsi, the speaker of parliament, and Mohamed Hassan Barre, the head of the election commission.
The main topic at last night’s event was the coming political transitions in both Puntland and Mogadishu, and the lighter subject matters relating to the recent Karkaar peace negotiations and the future of the ongoing oil exploration program. Events like last night’s have become commonplace in Garowe over the last few months.

UK’s Secret Oil Deal with Somalia
Last week, I told you there were massive oil finds in the Indian Ocean, and that the United States is in a covert war to get them.
This is important.
Just look at the takeover battle with Cove Energy (COVE)…
Cove was up another 20% on Friday as Thai PTT raised the ante on Shell to $1.8 billion.
Bloomberg reports: “Cove’s assets are world class and have high potential for discovering a large amount of gas.”
But it’s not just Cove who is a player here. Tullow Energy (TLW) found “$30 billion worth of oil in Uganda and French Guiana.”
Eni SpA (ENI) and Anadarko Petroleum Corp (APC) “led exploration off Africa’s east coast that yielded the biggest gas finds in a decade.”
Very Oily Area.
There is a lot of oil in East Africa and just off the coast in the Indian Ocean.
A few years ago, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted their own analysis…
Their conclusion: Over 71 billion barrels of crude lay untouched in shallow pockets dotting the East Africa region.
These deposits, it turns out, are a mirror image of the Middle Eastern fossil fuel super-system.
More specifically, they are a southwestern extension of the Marib-Shabwa and Sayun-Masila Basins that created the Saudi Oil Empire — and gave rise to the world’s first and only trillionaire family.
As I wrote last week, Obama and his NATO allies want that oil.
The Americans and the French have large numbers of special forces soldiers in Djibouti right next to Somalia.
On the surface, they are there to halt piracy. But they’re really after the extension of Saudi oil fields which run into Africa.
Hillary Wants It.
There was a major international meeting in London last week.
Hillary Clinton, David Cameron, and forty other high-level diplomats met to talk about bringing peace to Somalia and destroying the al-Qaeda-backed force of al-Shabaab.
A few days before the meeting, the UN raised the African Union force that’s on the ground in Somalia from 12,000 to 18,000.
Some local websites are reporting al-Shabaab leadership has fled to Yemen, but it’s too soon to know for sure…
The summit followed a surprise visit by British Foreign Secretary William Hague to Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, where he discussed “the beginnings of an opportunity” to rebuild the country. Britain also appointed an ambassador to the country.
Turkey went so far as to set up an embassy.
Getting Serious.
The battle for Mogadishu and the Black Hawk down story happened 18 years ago.
So why are the U.S. and its allies getting serious now?
Simple. The world needs oil.
Brent Sea Crude is above $125 a barrel and Europe is facing a severe depression.
In a back room over cooling tea and crumpets, Britain proposed giving Somalia humanitarian and security aid in exchange for drilling rights.
According to the Guardian:
Abdulkadir Abdi Hashi, minister for international cooperation in Puntland, north-east Somalia, said, “We have spoken to a number of UK officials, some have offered to help us with the future management of oil revenues. They will help us build our capacity to maximise (sic) future earnings from the oil industry.”
Hashi said, “Somalia would talk to BP at the right time about technology needed to explore Somalia’s oil reserves.”
The Next Phase.
Last month, a small Canadian company started drilling for oil in Somalia. This is the first new well in 21 years. Oil is expected to be extracted within 20 to 30 days.
In response, al-Qaeda groups went to Twitter and declared all oil and gas licenses were nullified. But these cutthroat thugs are losing…
This isn’t 1993. The world is no longer afraid of taking out terrorists.
Attack drones are quietly destroying al-Qaeda militants.
African Union troops are nearing Mogadishu.
At the same time, Kenyan and Ethiopian forces are taking control of southern and central Somalia.
Oil has a way of galvanizing will and focusing motivation.

Major Puntland Oil Updates Around the Corner
The buzz of Puntland oil has gone from the cafes of Puntland’s towns and cities to the hotel lobbies and public meeting squares of Nairobi and other global cities where Somalis are prominent.
Updates were the topic of discussion. Somalis worldwide have been glued to the global market as Dharoor Valley exploration companies Red Emperor Resources, Range Resources, Horn Petroleum, and Africa Oil took the headlines in financial news, and communities both at home and abroad are awaiting news at any moment.
This is the first time that the Somali community has taken to the financial, foreign angle of oil exploration in their country, looking at how the global marketplace is reacting to their nation’s potential treasures.
Speaking to friends and family in Nairobi, we’ve been told that an imminent update, perhaps more than one on the same subject, is expected very soon, and that the anticipated report is to be nothing less than spectacular.
Aside from local opinions and expectations, the massive buying frenzy and stock mobility shown by the exploration firms in Puntland is expected to trigger releases.

Hunting
Been looking for good long term investments in oilies, and havent come across a single company of Ranges size that has such a diverse portfolio of projects, risk here is pretty well non-existent only upside from here IMHO.
Not in any way ramping just an opinion based on my own search.
Have invested in a small number of other Oilies that are all undervalued.
Also tend to invest following Pete Landaus lead, if its good enough for him thats all the recommendation I need.

OFF AND RUNNING
We are leaving the launch pad Wiggy, hoping for good week next week, hang on to them shares, noticed a lot of stop losses getting triggered on RRL & RMP, poor buggers got robbed, the ones that got triggered were set about 15- 20% under sale price.
The spreads were held and sales were popping up well under the price.
Risky putting a stop loss on AIM
Can you explain B4(eod)
Proactive investor Latest report:
Range Resources revenues rise as production ramps up
11:30 am by Philip Whiterow Range Resources’ (LON:RRL ASX:RRS) revenues soared in its latest half-year as the group ramped up its operation in the Caribbean.
Revenues rose to US$12.8 million from US$1.1 million, though net losses were little changed at US$2.2 million after heavy drilling costs. Gross producton for the half was just shy of 150,000 barrels of oil and 827 mcf of gas.
Range added it had drilled another three wells on its Trinidad acreage since the end of December, which had increased output to about 750 barrels of oil per day.
Range is in the middle of an extensive drilling campaign in Trinidad and said the number of rigs operating on its onshore licences will double during March and April when another two rigs join up.
The remaining two company rigs will also begin work towards the end of June and this will mean a significant ramp up in drilling activity and production.
Range added that work is nearing completion on the reprocessing of its 3D seismic database in Trinidad.
This is expected to improve Range's ability to identify and image deeper drilling targets across its Morne Diablo and South Quarry acreage, including the Herrera Formation.
The company believes that improved imaging of its 3D dataset will help define existing targets and lead to additional prospects.
Once data reprocessing is completed, the company will look at its deeper drilling targets with the expectation of drilling its first deep test well in the third quarter of 2012.
In the US, Range said work is currently underway to revise the reserve estimates at North Chapman Ranch and is expected to be finalised once the Albrecht #1 appraisal well comes on line.
Elsewhere, Range is part of the consortium drilling the first wells in Puntland, Somalia for twenty years.
The highly anticipated first well spudded in January and will take 90 days to drill and evaluate.
Shares rose 0.5p to 14.75p.
