Winterized Biodiesel And Straight Vegetable Oil Conversion
http://www.dancingrabbit.org/energy/winter_svo.php
so SKF gonna bounce off the 200?
Making BioDiesel - It’s a piece of piss
There’s nothing we like more at SchNEWS towers than a spot of DIY, be it a pint of homebrew or a free party. But one piece of DIY that we reckon is up there with free parties is home made diesel.
Yep, forget about handing your hard-earned coffers over to the corrupt, greedy and killing corporations like Shell and BP, take a squeezy bottle, a piece of sticky backed plastic and make your own biodiesel. No seriously, biodiesel is a fuel made from waste vegetable oil, of which there is literally tons of the stuff being dumped in landfill sites up and down the country! This otherwise waste is easily collected from chip shops and restaurants and without too much hassle processed to make biodiesel that can be used to run any diesel engine. Biodiesel, far from being an inferior homemade product, is better for your engine than the usual crappy fossil-based fuel that is helping to screw up the environment and people’s health. Biodiesel can be made in your own backyard with little start up cost involved and works out at about 30 pence per litre. Wanna know more? Then read on.
Let’s first rewind and go back to the beginning of the 1900s where Dr Rudolf Diesel has just invented the diesel engine and is displaying it at the Paris exhibition. Sat right there is the mother of all diesel engines happily chugging away running on peanut oil! Rudolf had designed the Diesel engine to be run a variety of fuels and during his Paris speech said, "the diesel engine can be fed with vegetable oils and will help considerably in the development of the agriculture of the countries which use it." Sounds good for developing countries but not so good for the petroleum industry. A few years later and Rudolf Diesel’s body is found drifting face down in the English Channel. After holding secret talks with the UK navy about fitting diesel engines into their submarine fleet Rudolf Diesel was killed by the French to stop his diesel technology being fitted into submarines over the world, nothing new there then! After Diesel’s death the petroleum industry capitalised on the diesel engine by naming one of their crappy by-products of petroleum distillation ‘diesel fuel’. That’s how dirty diesel fuel has come to be the fuel for diesel engines.
Fast-forward to the beginning of a brave new millennium, one where oil is running out, the climate is fucked and Biodiesel can save the world, well no but it can do its bit! More at http://www.schnews.org.uk/diyguide/howtomakebiodiesel.htm

PharmaGap compound tests selectivity to PKC theta
2008-04-24 07:59 MT - News Release
Mr. Robert McInnis reports
PHARMAGAP REPORTS POSITIVE EARLY RESULTS FOR NEXT DRUG COMPOUND
PharmaGap Inc. has successfully completed in vitro or "bench" testing of a new compound designed to be a selective inhibitor of Protein Kinase C Theta (PKC theta), showing indication of selectivity to and inhibition of PKC theta. This new compound follows on the successful completion of the research and development phase of preclinical testing for the company's selective inhibitor of PKC alpha, PhG-alpha-1, announced last week.
PKC theta was selected as the target for the company's next compound on the basis of interest expressed by Dr. Gary Schwartz of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute New York in working with the company to develop a selective inhibitor of PKC theta for use in treatment of sarcomas, cancers of supportive and connective tissue (that is bone, cartilage, fat, muscle and blood vessels). Dr. Schwartz is chief of Sloan Kettering's Melanoma and Sarcoma service. In vitro testing of the new PKC theta inhibitor will continue at PharmaGap and in Dr. Schwartz's laboratories at Sloan-Kettering.
Said Sloan-Kettering's Dr. Schwartz: "I look forward to continuing my collaboration with PharmaGap for this exciting new compound, as it holds the promise of new treatment alternatives in the future for sarcoma patients. Selectively targeting PKC theta may provide therapeutic benefits not provided by current treatments."
This initial positive in vitro test result for the new PKC theta inhibitor also demonstrates the company's ability to apply its knowledge base and proprietary techniques to develop a rich pipeline of peptide drug compounds targeting the PKC family of proteins. Proprietary analytical tools provide the Company with the ability to design and test drug designs inside the computer, allowing for the optimization of the compound design prior to synthesis and commencement of laboratory testing.
From its inception, the company has undertaken the scientific research and development work required to understand the many ways in which the 11 unique isoforms making up the family of proteins named Protein Kinase C act within the human body in relation to human diseases. PharmaGap has developed proprietary computer-based methodologies that provide the ability to design selective inhibitors for PKC isoforms. The importance of the PKC family is well known in the medical and pharmaceutical industry and has been and continues to be the subject of significant preclinical and clinical research.
PKCs are associated with a range of human disease conditions, including not only cancer, but also metabolic diseases such as diabetes (PKC beta, epsilon), cardiac disease (PKC delta), Alzheimer's (PKC epsilon) and neurological disease (PKC gamma). In addition to its compounds targeting PKC alpha and theta, PharmaGap has designed, and is currently optimizing prior to synthesis and testing, an inhibitor for PKC epsilon.

US Ag Secretary: Stores Move To Limit Rice Buys Driven By Emotion
Dow Jones April 24, 2008: 05:52 PM EST
KANSAS CITY (AP)--U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer said Thursday that a decision by the two biggest U.S. warehouse chains to limit how much rice customers can buy is driven by emotion, not by evidence that rice is in short supply.
On Wednesday, Sam's Club, a division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT), said it would limit customers to four bags at a time of certain types of rice. That followed a decision by Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST) to limit bulk rice purchases in some of its stores.
During a news conference here, Schafer said there's no evidence of a shortage of rice in the world. But he acknowledged some countries' concern about food security.

CBC targets Chinese hockey fans with Mandarin broadcasts of NHL playoffs
Canadian Press Apr 20, 2008, 1:30 PM EDT
VANCOUVER - There's no word for hockey puck in Mandarin.
So Jason Wang, who's been calling the Montreal-Boston series of the NHL playoffs in his native Chinese language for the CBC - a first for the public broadcaster - just uses the Mandarin word for ball.
It's one of the many hockey terms Wang has had to translate and in some cases make up as he calls the games for a Chinese audience. He says it's no easy task.
"Especially in hockey, where Chinese culture doesn't have a context for it, so I have to translate a lot of the terms, all the penalty calls, and sometimes I have to borrow from other sports," says Wang, sitting in the small recording booth at the CBC building in Vancouver where he calls the games while watching them on a large TV.
"I have an entire list of penalty translations that can get a little tricky," he adds, holding up a cheat sheet of his translations. "I'm speaking to pictures, so I think the audience will catch on pretty quickly."
Wang will call one series in each of the four playoff rounds, with the Mandarin broadcasts streaming on the CBC Sports website. He adds that the games are also being shown on several satellite and specialty TV stations.
Wang started calling sports with the University of British Columbia campus radio station, where he provided the play-by-play for varsity athletics.
He added Mandarin into the mix last year when he called several Vancouver Whitecaps soccer games in his mother tongue.
The producer Wang worked with for the Whitecaps games then approached the CBC about adding Mandarin to "Hockey Night in Canada."
Wang, a 24-year-old aspiring broadcaster who was born in Taiwan, says it's too early to know how many people are tuning into the games, but he says the audience for such Chinese-language programing is only getting bigger.
"With such a growing Chinese-Canadian community throughout the country, especially in the major cities ... we think this is a market that will continue to grow," he says. "We just believe that it will grow as time goes on."
Larry Kwong, who became the first Chinese player in the NHL when he played a single game for the New York Rangers in 1948, lets out a delighted chuckle when he hears about the broadcasts.
"No kidding, I can't believe that," says the 84-year-old, who was born in Interior British Columbia and now lives in Calgary.
"Why not? You know how popular hockey is here, and I can't see why it shouldn't be good to get them (Chinese-Canadians) involved in it."
Kwong, who speaks Cantonese and not Mandarin, says he thinks the broadcasts could attract more Chinese fans to the NHL, just as he hopes his own short-lived appearance in the league did more than a half-century ago.
"It brought some Chinese in, yes, but there wasn't enough of it," he says. "There wasn't much interest in the Chinese population for hockey, but now, with TV and all the games getting broadcast, they can't help but take some interest in it."
Kwong's NHL career was brief: he was a Ranger for just one game before returning to the club's farm team, the New York Rovers, and he was only on the ice for a single shift.
"They didn't give me much of a chance," he says. "I was really nervous to start with, and to get just a minute and a half on the ice, that's not good."
Still, Kwong says he doesn't think his ethnicity ever stood in the way of his hockey career.
In fact, Kwong, who made a living playing in several minor and senior leagues, including a year with the Nottingham Panthers in England, said it was easier to get onto a hockey team than it was to find a job.
"I didn't think there was a barrier against Chinese players playing. There was a barrier for working and things like that," he said. "In my days, we played hockey to get a job. Jobs were hard to get in those days - those were the things that we had to fight against."
It's difficult to find references to other Chinese players in the NHL.
One of the more recent examples was Peter Ing, a goaltender who had short stints with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Edmonton Oilers and the Detroit Red Wings in the 1990s. And there have also been only a handful of players from other Asian countries.
As for Wang, he hopes the CBC invites him back to call more games next season - and if that happens, he wants to trade his quiet recording studio at the CBC for a chance to broadcast live from the stadium.
"That's where you get the most atmospheric feel to the game," he says. "You can feel the crowd, you can feel the play developing ahead of you instead of relying on the cameraman."
