Well stated!
BC, Thanks for the post(s) and the perfectly logical summation.
Pesonalizit, no disagreement from me.
I hope (and currently believe) you are correct. The statement merely reflected what the official notice from TAG stated about the transition that needs to occur in 2015.
Neom/Nellymoser is obviously the best option moving forward.
Cheers!
For what it's worth, I just scanned a TAG barcode and it still goes through Microsoft.com.
http://wp.tag.microsoft.com/R/2/T/E.aspx?K=HTEYgky4806QezkzZqSzww2&V=1&C=sXZB18JKSlpkoUSozm0qWY6sDdmYDubRNBP_JfQMlLzUtpjXvjRyv8fy9nf7wxG01s3eP-QJ4CtLIocv9JX9yfKI2w4pISe1COIU6Zzx_IY7lh7630W0RX3K1cz-whUgpbYK-yDg-m0UaANxGYd1LNQ1AiApPTJO9EukXThO77e_9BPX-bu6FAKiVWH0lQhLvR5ZzbMT8k9p5_r6wjtJ-7F9eO0QuTdNFQoIPlUtzire5bUQSf77MNjlIe2rCRASTZw3nLQQYLTcxJkAQ9p3Sz8Rs43m0_-bI8Q9tjwAwc1
(Note, I intentionally changed one letter in this path because this tag was related to a workplace) The tag worked as expected.
Also, I have created tags in the past and they all still resolve to tag.Microsoft.com before being (in)directed to the defined destination/action. Just go to http://tag.microsoft.com/manageads.aspx to see this (you will need to create an account).
I know I have a choice to switch to Scanbuhbye, but I won't.
SOG, thank you for the accurate information (and) supporting references!
Don't confuse symbology with Code Resolution.
The paper Vero referenced (Thanks Vero!) is very clear on this extraordinarily important distinction and to imply otherwise is simply misleading.
Symbology
The algorithm by which data is encoded as visual elements (typically arrangements of lines or squares), and the resultant “look and feel” for the user.
See 2.2 Informative References for other types of symbologies that are supported.
Code Resolution (or Code Resolution function)
The process of mapping a Direct Code or an Indirect Code into either content to be consumed directly by the device, or the address of content (or a service) to be accessed by the device. Typically, Code Resolution for Indirect Codes requires access to network service.
REF: 6.2.1 1D Barcode Specific Requirements (For Future Release)
Other pertinent definitions from the doc:
Code Clearing House function
The process of Indirect Code routing based on the Indirect Code Identifier, through which:
a) the Resolving CMP is determined, and
b) the Indirect Code Identifier is forwarded to the Resolving CMP.
Code Management Platform (CMP)
The Code Management Platform provides a resolution service pertaining to Indirect Codes; it is normally capable of performing both the Code Clearing House (CCH) function and Code Resolution (CR) and may also interact with other Code Management Platforms, as required. In certain deployment scenarios, the CCH function and the CR function may be implemented in two separate Code Management platforms.
(See Split-CMP-Parent and Split-CMP-Child).
Code Transfer
The ability for a Mobile Code Publisher to change the Resolving CMP for a single or multiple Indirect
Code Identifiers.
Direct Code
A Mobile Code that contains either:
(a) content for direct consumption by the device, or
(b) the address of content (or a service) to be accessed (typically, a URI [URI]).
Home CMP
The CMP to which a particular MCC is configured to send all Code Resolution requests. Where applicable in a Split-CMP deployment scenario, the Home CMP may be a Split-CMP-Parent.
Indirect Code
A Mobile Code that contains an Indirect Code Identifier.
Indirect Code Identifier
An identifier in the Indirect Code that has to be resolved in order to access the intended content or service.
See also Code Resolution.
Mobile Code
A 1D or 2D barcode as read by camera-equipped devices.
Mobile Code Client The MC Enabler software entity that resides in the device, and contains the functionality to acquire,
decode, and extract the encoded information for further processing as required. This is often referred to as
a Mobile Code Reader and these terms can be used synonymously.
Mobile Code Data Format
The syntactical description of the information contained within a Mobile Code.
Mobile Code Publisher
This is a brand (business, organisation or individual) who distributes certain content or services (e.g., an
advertising campaign) to a mass audience by using Mobile Code Scanning as a channel.
Mobile Code Registry
A local registry responsible for sub-allocation of Mobile Code Routing Prefixes within the ranges of Routing Prefixes obtained from OMNA. The Mobile Code Registry (MCR) also supports a data look-up facility accessible by authorised principals (e.g. CMPs or Split-CMP-Parents) for Routing Prefixes in its database.
Resolution Identifier
That part of the Indirect Code Identifier that is used to index the content or service.
Resolving CMP
The CMP (or Split-CMP-Child, where applicable) that is able to resolve a particular Indirect Code
Identifier.
Routing Prefix
That part of the Indirect Code Identifier that contains a value that is uniquely assigned to the CMP
I strongly suggest everyone read this paper if you are interested in Direct and Indirect Codes and the resolution possibilities.

This post definitely calls for more cowbell!
Poptech, I see now why you are lost.
Did you scan the code? I think it will help put this in perspective.
Also, look at the (Album:Timeline Photos) you will see many examples of this common theme throughout.
I have a feeling you are going to love it!
This whitepaper does not say that images are not permitted, perhaps you may be taking this out of context from the intent of the document.
These are "Best Practices" for breathing life into traditional and digital marketing media by allowing brands to instantly engage with their target audience.
What does this mean?
Same here. Now I just get an option for searching Amazon when scanning a 1D code.
*I did get the shopsavvy option in the past (after initially running my current update I believe), but have not seen it in a while.
It might be of some interest that when I changed my Country to "United Kingdom" the Amazon search was going through www.amazon.co.uk.
And for grins I tried some other Countries and the amazon search went to the country-specific site.
France -> www.amazon.fr
Germany -> www.amazon.de
Brazil -> www.amazon.com.br
China -> www.amazon.cn
Thanks for the heads-up le-bon ton-roule!
Intuitive and very useful in my opinion !!
NICE!
Thanks for the heads up le-bon ton-roule!!
It will be interesting to see how these updates will be leveraged long-term.
Excellent Post lesnshawn!
Makes perfect sense ...
Your response appears to be inadequate. On the surface, that may have appeared to be an obvious response from a simple web search, but that "obvious link that appears in the response" ( Googlization mentality ) appears to not adequately answer the question in the proper context.
Is this what you are both looking for with respect to Disclosure Requirements?

Nice summary!
Thanks JP!
Also, I saw a copy of the Verizon Yellow Book (Superpages) that has a 2D barcode on the cover and in many advertisements. (Scanbuy?)
I am very anxious to see this implemented within the AT&T Yellow Pages as well. It seems very compelling to have an Indirect code as part of the advertisement, with the ability to change/refresh the code resolution anytime throughout the year without any requirement to re-print the code.
(Vero posted about the Green/Reusable Codes which is a great way to look at it in my view.)
I Agree 100%.
Also, when you login to AT&T Create-a-Code, the site root is MobileTag.
Just as you mention, I was also simply looking for clarity on any association with or tangible benefit to NEOM.
Thanks Again!
Of course...
Poptech
Thanks for the reply, rickyaces!!
Yes, very interesting, I really appreciate the clarification because I thought we had heard from an insider that MobileTag wasn't involved. Glad to hear that is not the case.

On the AT&T Create-a-Code login page (http://www.createacode.att.mobiletag.com/index.php) I noticed there is a note about this USPS discount and there is a link to more information regarding how to qualify. (This information alludes to the fact that AT&T might still be in the barcode business)...
Thanks Vero! (and Beambe)
Very interesting, ~6:20 mark they show quite a few advertisements (codes). My German is very spotty, I could only pick out bits and pieces, but it was certainly interesting.
Here is the German-->English translation of the web page, but I would definitely be interested in the complete transcript: http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=de&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ruhrtour.tv%2Fwp%2F

ROADOG,
Thanks for the post/reminder about this important event. Please re-post after the store meeting today with any insight or information.
Regarding GS1, for personal reasons I am extremely happy about the (accurate) allergen information that is/will be available on products, but I think there are numerous other benefits to consumers from this alliance.
Thanks again for providing real-world information to the Asylum, it is always interesting.
(I had to piggy-back this reply since the original was gone before I could reply)
So, I was right. You were scanning a product that is not available on Amazon or eBay. (Booze is not available on either) That hardly equates to your statement that NeoReader did not retrieve results on Amazon.
Also, your Hidden Valley Ranch code was invalid (it contains an extra trailing 0).
If you remove that incorrect digit, you can find this product on Amazon that is a 6-count box. The correct code should be 071100005516, you or anyone can just type this in to the CODE section of NeoReader to find it or go here.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=071100005516
Regarding ShopSavvy, I have already looked at ShopSavvy in the past. You are correct on this one point, ShopSavvy is certainly not the gold standard nor the topic of this conversation.
Searching 1D Codes on NeoReader works great for me on iPhone 3G (since day1 when this functionality was released) and Windows 7 Phone. I don't have a BlackBerry so I can't speak to that, but I would not expect there to be any real difference in the OS to deliver this functionality. (although I would be interested in hearing experiences from the board)
I haven't scanned anything yet that Amazon doesn't carry. Maybe if you can share what you are scanning, others can verify the results. Most likely you are scanning a product that is not available on Amazon or eBay.
-What is the exact failure you encounter?
and
-What was the specific product/code that you were scanning?
Amazon and eBay won't have as many results for a given product, but I find both much more usable than the the massive result-set from Google, I suspect it just depends on whether you are looking for information on a product or want to purchase online. For example, eBay won't carry BAND-AIDs or Snickers, but Amazon carries both.
(also if you know of any commercial AT&T codes the board can scan that would be very helpful)
Hope that Helps
I watched this again for proably the 5th. time and it is still awesome, thanks for posting again.
One interesting note was that in the Experience section, all of those barcodes resolved successfully using the MobileTag reader.
They lead to http://getunity.com/mobilebarcodes/video1
(video2, video3, video4,video5 etc..)
Someone on this board stated previously that:
vero, your post makes perfect sense to me.
EBay is certainly a leader in this emerging industry and they appear to be executing their strategy and making loads of $$.
As you mention, I also find it difficult to imagine EBay did this for kicks. IMO, they did their homework and realized it is cheaper in the long run to pony-up now.
It borders on absurd to think they signed the license agreement with no intent on ever using this technology. It is even more absurd this notion was the immediate response you got from your post.
Wouldn't (BigInJapan/ShopSavvy http://shopsavvy.mobi/) be a candidate for licensing for similar use of the technology??
Queue Popfuscation response in 3, 2, 1.....
FWIW,
I tested (5) codes that were created on AT&T create-a-code
http://www.att.com/createacode/ -->>
http://www.createacode.att.mobiletag.com/
(4) "web page" codes
(1) "contact card" code
(Datamatrix symbology is covered today by several ISO/IEC standards and is in the public domain)
Results
========
(2) of the web page codes were successfully read by the MobileTag reader (the other two tags returned a "409 Conflict" error).
The "Contact Card" code also scanned successfully on the MobileTag reader.
Given these results, would you agree there is some synchronization happening between the management platform databases? (if they are indeed different)
Also, the analogy of the AT&T barcode INDEX being like an IP address falls short and is somewhat misleading. Since the INDEX must be resolved before you are directed to the ultimate destination, this would be more akin to a VIP (Virtual IP) where middle tier (logic) determines the nexthop or final destination based on configuration (much like the barcode will resolve to a destination based on the most recent configuration by the user). Given the ultimate destination of the code can be changed anytime in the barcode management platform, this is not really like an IP address at all.
Having said that, I am still unclear what this means for NEOM, but am anxious to find out more.
When I scan this code it contains:
http://jhc.com/r/By8
This ultimately takes me to a different web page that is presented when I view the same URL on my computer (vs. scanning from my phone.)
--->>> http://thehomedepot.jhc.com/index.asp?dpid=48904
On my phone this is a really nice interface that includes detail of the specific Tree that is very readable and contains a ton of information. From my comuter, I just get a high level web page that goes to the Garden Club and allows me to search for plants etc..
No Spin Zone
for almost 10 minutes anyway...
I would encourage everyone that has a vested interest in this technology to try a (currently free) account for both Microsoft Tag -and- AT&T create-a-code.
To verify whether the encoding has changed on the AT&T site, I created a couple of new "web page codes".
-AT&T Create-a-Code encoded in DataMatrix as:
5415400002002888
-and-
-"The Asylum" encoded in DataMatrix as:
5415400002002887
*It might be interesting to note that when you sign in to AT&T Create-a-code, you still sign in through MobileTag
http://www.createacode.att.mobiletag.com
(someone here alluded earlier that MobileTag was no longer involved), but this does not appear to have changed.
Very anxious to see how NEOM plays into all of the above (and more)...
My best to all longs! Bottom Line, we need !!MORE COWBELL!!
Very Nice!
QR code: http://SCN.BY/9T9AB0HTW8HNK5 -->
http://app.scanlife.com/appdownload/dl
(the destination is dependent on scanning OS version, I ended up going to the base URL, but other phone models will potentially have a different experience...and they can change that experience behind the scenes without reprinting the code)
Interesting use of terminology in parts of this description.
Clarification Needed if you don't mind:
If I just type in http://getreader.com on my computer I go here:
http://getreader.com/dt_en.shtml
Note also the hint to visit the page from your mobile device to get an applicable reader is implying I will get a different result if I do this from a phone (depending upon the phone model/manufacturer).
If I type this same URL http://getreader.com into the browser on my phone I end up going to http://www.get.neoreader.com and it detects the exact version of my phone.
If I use NeoReader to scan the barcode encoded with the URL http://getreader.com it goes to the following URL http://getreader.com/varIDGo677827_s.shtml
This URL was not reachable from my computer.
This page contains manufacturer options that would differ from yours since I use a different phone.
I realize there is a root URL encoded in the 2D code. (encoding)
I want to make sure I understand your definition and whether you are only referring to the encoding and not the processing? I am referring to the latter.
You state this is a direct code. By your definition are you saying a Direct code is simply a root website URL? (with no visible index related to the processing methodology)
i.e. http://getreader.com/varIDGoxxx.html compared to
http://getreader.com ??
What I am looking to understand is which methodology is used to process this code? It appears this methodology takes into account the phone manufacturer and presents the options accordingly based on this information. The (processing methodology) result is thus different depending upon several determining factors.
Which methodology is used here to process (not encode) the URL?
Thanks again, just want to make sure I understand.
Awesome! More fun with Partial Indirect. I will anxiously await Laura letting us know whether any of this can be monetized and to what extent.
I looked around for 5 minutes and found quite a few interesting links. Some old names popped up (Bems/Mastercard, Roundtree) as well as some new ones I have not seen referenced previously.
This is non-exhaustive slice of the 8 character Index based on the previous example. I only tried a range of 200 different numbers, so there is likely much more going on while some in the asylum are claiming otherwise.

Were these not your questions?
These questions were addressed explicitly and in great detail. Hopefully once and for all we can clear up this base confusion.
Again, I humbly submit everyone should listen to the call (and review the whitepaper mentioned in the call) and draw your own conclusions. I merely submit for perusal the trasnscript and time where these questions were asked/addressed.
23:53
Question:
With 2D barcodes being cheap to implement, why aren't we seeing more major Brands talking about them and using them?
Answer:
(Laura) I believe we are seeing lots of major brands using them today.
Best Buy, Costco, Kodak, AT&T, Pepsi, Heineken
All examples of Brands using barcodes, and seeing success in their initiatives.
We do feel that many large Brands are still in the trial phases of their deployments and rollouts are still to follow.
24:21
Next Question:
Has the Neustar 2D Indirect EcoSystem (shown growing) revenue for us?
How is NeoMedia leveraging Neustar's clearing house with the new direction of MANAGED DIRECT?
Answer:
Questions regarding the success of Neustar's clearing house and the approach they are taking to market will need to be directed towards Neustar as we are not able to speak on their behalf.
Neustar continues to be a partner to NeoMedia, and the accounts that are appropriate for clearinghouse opportunities, NeoMedia is evangelizing the Neustar solution per the terms of our agreement with them.
24:58
Next Question:
How long before MANAGED Barcodes (which generate revenue for NeoMedia) begin to rapidly accelerate in the marketplace?
Answer:
For those not familair with the nomenclature around methodologies for DIRECT, INDIRECT and PARTIAL INDIRECT,
I would encourage you to review NeoMedia's Whitepaper titled "2D Mobile Barcodes, the Definitive Guide"
This is available on our website http://www.neom.com under Resources and then Whitepapers.
NeoMedia and many other players in the industry support MANAGED Barcodes, however pure DIRECT codes are also being deployed en-masse. Primarily because the are quick, easy and usually free to setup. However DIRECT Barcodes can actually hamper the success of a compaign. Once created, they cannot be modified, forcing the brand to generate a new code to generate new code each time they want to deliver new content. DIRECT codes are also not scalable for Brands or businesses wanting to launch a large compaign that may change throughout its lifecycle.
Moreover, Mobile's other key other key benefit (its tracabiltiy) is also lost using a DIRECT code as they limit the ability to gather anything more than basic information about scan rates. A PARTIAL INDIRECT code on the other hand has the reach of a DIRECT code combined with valuable customization capability allowing marketers to use a single code and the flexibility to change the code routing at any time, or linking to multiple pieces of content simultaneously based on a user's voluntary demographic information, saving significant time and reprint costs.
Using a PARTIAL INDIRECT Code also allows Brands to gather substantially more data including time, date, location of scan etc... NeoMedia is working on educating the market on the differences between DIRECT, INDIRECT and PARTIAL INDIRECT so that we can help the industry understand the difference and the value to a PARTIAL INDIRECT deployment.
For the Brand, it ensures the message hits the consumer's sweet spot, encouraging additional engagement and action. Giving them maximum reach and providing them with valuable analytics upon which future campaigns can be based.
