Flesh-Eating Bacteria Kills Louisiana Man
Man Fell Overboard, Cut Hand
POSTED: 9:39 am PDT July 23, 2007
COCODRIE, La. -- After flesh-eating bacteria claimed the life of his father, Michael Theriot is warning people against swimming in Louisiana bayous.
Last month, Michael Theriot Sr. was on the Robinson Canal in Cocodrie, La., when he fell overboard and cut his hand on a piece of tin.
From then on, he battled an infection of Vibrio vulnificus, a disease found during the summer months in warm salt water.
"Twenty-six days he stayed in the hospital on life support, from the time of the accident until he passed away on June 12," Theriot said.
Symptoms include fever, chills, diarrhea and intense stomach pain. Vibrio vulnificus can be treated with antibiotics, but it has to be treated early.
Or, as Theriot warned, don't go into the water at all.
"As we have seen in the last month, it can be very devastating," he said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said bloodstream infections are fatal in about 50 percent of cases.

Thousands flee floods
AP
Monday 2nd July, 2007
OSAWATOMIE, Kan. (AP) – Rivers swollen to record levels by days of heavy rain continued inching higher in parts of the southern Plains on Monday, keeping people from returning to ruined homes.
The Kansas National Guard was sent to help with a mandatory evacuation of Osawatomie, a small town in eastern Kansas and one of the hardest–hit communities in the region. The town evacuated 40 percent of its 4,600 residents after two rivers – Pottawatomie Creek on the town’s south flank and the Marais des Cygnes on the north – rose out of their banks.
"I think the Marais des Cygnes will be OK," Mayor Philip Dudley said. "I’m still concerned about Pottawatomie Creek. It’s supposed to get over 49 feet on Monday."
Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius planned to survey the damage Monday.
Levees and dikes held after volunteers reinforced them with sandbags, but water pooling in low–lying areas overwhelmed pumps and flooded neighborhoods.
Retired welder Claude Blackmon, 65, stood in a street in southeast Osawatomie and pointed out the mobile home where he had lived for the two years since his wife died.
It wasn’t easy to spot – water covered all but the top 18 inches of the trailer.
Blackmon saved his riding lawnmower, his guns and some important papers. Everything else – new appliances, family heirlooms – was inundated.
None of it was insured. "I don’t know what I’m going to do," he said. "I’m a little too old to start over now."
"It’s going to be a few days before we get some of the higher rivers to come down," said Maren Stoflet, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Pleasant Hill, Mo.
More rain was scattered over Texas and eastern Oklahoma on Sunday and Monday, the latest in nearly two weeks of storms that have inundated parts of Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma. Eleven deaths have been blamed on the storms and flooding in Texas, where two men are missing.
The overnight rainfall flooded a few roads in South Texas but there were no reports of stranded motorists or evacuations, authorities said.
During June, the weather service measured more than 11 inches of rain at Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport, about a half–inch shy of the 1928 record. The Texas town of Marble Falls, northwest of Austin, collected about 18 inches in one night last week.
At least 200 people were still displaced from their homes near the Brazos River in Texas’ Parker County.
Although some flooding eased in northern and central Texas, officials cautioned that more was possible.
"It’s a continuous up and down situation," said Shawn Scott, Parker County emergency management coordinator. "This could be ongoing for the next few days."
Oklahoma also has suffered flooding, with some of the worst on Sunday near Bartlesville, where the Caney River was more than 3 feet above flood stage.
Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer passenger rail service between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth was halted Sunday because of flooding in north Texas, said Terry Angier, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. Passengers were placed on buses.
Elsewhere in Kansas, officials in Independence and Coffeyville prepared for additional flooding along the Verdigris River, which already had reached record levels, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers planned to open floodgates at the Elk City and Fall River Toronto Lake reservoirs upstream to ease pressure on their dams.
The Verdigris River at Independence rose to a record 52.4 feet Sunday morning, shattering the old mark of 47.6 feet and more than 20 feet above flood stage. In Coffeyville, the old record of 26.6 feet fell Saturday night as the river surged past 29 feet, more than 10 feet above flood stage.

Floods rout Oklahomans; oil slick is reservoir-bound
The Associated Press
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 07.04.2007
http://www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/190367
MIAMI, Okla. — Hundreds of residents fled their northeastern Oklahoma homes Tuesday with all they could carry as floodwaters pushed destruction downstream, and one river carried an oil slick toward a large reservoir that supplies water to several cities.
An estimated 42,000 gallons of thick crude oil that spilled from a Kansas refinery on Sunday floated with mud and debris down the Verdigris River, coating everything it touched with a slimy, smelly layer of goo.
The slick wasn't expected to have an effect on water supply intakes located well below the surface Oklahoma's Oologah Lake, about 30 miles northeast of Tulsa, said Skylar McElhaney, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.
The oil joins other causes of misery for thousands affected by flooding in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Torrential downpours led to fast-rising water early Tuesday in eastern Texas, prompting a couple of people to be rescued from waterlogged vehicles.
A 70-year-old man was swept off the top of a car into floodwaters, and he held onto a tree for about four hours before being rescued by game wardens, said Richard Hill, Hunt County's emergency management coordinator.
No homes were flooded, Hill said Tuesday afternoon.
"We have had probably a good four hours of no rain, and the water is receding," he said. "Right now, it's OK. But of course the forecast is for more torrential downpours tonight."
In northeastern Oklahoma, the rain-swollen Neosho River spilled over its banks, forcing at least 300 Miami residents to evacuate, and flooding buildings and apartments at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, where classes were canceled for the rest of the week.
The river, swollen from heavy rains earlier in the week upstream in southeastern Kansas, was scheduled to crest around midnight at 31 feet — more than 15 feet above flood stage, Miami City Manager Mike Spurgeon said.
In Kansas, the Verdigris River had crested and was beginning to recede Tuesday at Coffeyville, but it was kept high by water being released from the Elk City and Fall River Toronto Lake reservoirs upstream, said Jim Miller, Montgomery County emergency manager.
No injuries were reported, but Spurgeon said another 200 to 300 homes may have to be evacuated before the water recedes.

How long would it take to get a sufficiant number of units in place to treat any waste water from a hurricane?
oh! that's right, all the chiefs are in England and they cannot produce any more units without more financing.
anybody that buys this stock hoping to profit from a hurricane this season is NUTS!
jmho
why do you think this is a hurricane stock?
This company doesn't even have any product on hand.
Any order for more units will require more financing to produce those units.
This is no hurricane stock.
It was once before the news got out but no longer.
it's pretty simple really...
the lower the pressure, the better the traction.
normal driving requires a better grip on corners than on straightaways. A good grip on the front is more important than on the rear for every kind of driving except drag racing.
hence....lower pressure on the front tires.

During a later phone conversation I had with Boettcher, he told me that based on his experience, it was his opinion that I was likely on a dry run. He said he's had many of these experiences and so have many of his fellow captains. They've been trying to speak out about this but so far their words have been falling on deaf ears.

B&C is billing about $50,000 a day for the work
HOUSTON (Dow Jones)--Boots & Coots International Well Control Inc. (WEL), one
of two small firms involved in fighting oil-well fires in Iraq, said it paid off
the balance of a $1 million loan from Checkpoint Business Inc.
Jerry Winchester, chief executive of Boots & Coots, told Dow Jones Newswires
that the company on Friday paid a little more than $700,000 in principal and
interest on the $1 million loan facility provided by Checkpoint in December.
Checkpoint had proposed restructuring Boots & Coots through a Chapter 11
bankruptcy filing.
(This report and related background will be available on the Journal's Web
site, WSJ.com.)
Winchester said the company isn't currently considering bankruptcy as an
option. He said the company is focused on cutting costs and expanding the oil
well fire-prevention side of its business.
Boots & Coots, Houston, said on Jan. 31 that it was in default of the loan,
spurring speculation that Checkpoint would seek to wrest control of Boots &
Coots just as war in Iraq could bring salvation to the cash-strapped firm. He
declined to say who were the principal investors in Checkpoint, which is
incorporated in Panama, citing a confidentiality agreement.
Winchester said the company paid off the loan with revenue from first-quarter
operations, including work in Venezuela. He said the money didn't come from any
loans or payments from its contract to extinguish Iraqi oil-well fires, or from
its alliance partner Halliburton Co. (HAL), which owns 50,000 shares of
preferred stock in Boots & Coots.
Boots & Coots was one of two companies named last week as subcontractors to
work with general contractor Halliburton to fight oil-well fires. Winchester
said two teams of four or five Boots & Coots firefighters began work on Friday
on a handful of wells in southern Iraq. Boots & Coots is billing about $50,000 a
day for the work, Winchester confirmed.
Winchester said the repayment of the loan to Checkpoint is one step in
cleaning up Boots & Coots' balance sheet. The company still has $13.3 million in
debt, not including preferred stock. He said the company was exploring ways to
restructure the debt, including through consolidation. But he said the company's
heavy debt load wouldn't affect its ability to fight oil-well fires in Iraq.
"We are capable of responding not only to anything that happens in Iraq but to
our customers wherever they may be," Winchester said.

Boots & Coots Announces Payment of Checkpoint Business, Inc. Note
Friday March 28, 7:23 pm ET
HOUSTON, March 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boots & Coots International Well Control, Inc. (Amex: WEL - News) announced today that its Board of Directors decided against the restructuring proposal from Checkpoint Business, Inc. ("Checkpoint"). This proposal would have involved a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing by Boots & Coots and the cancellation of Boots & Coots' common equity as part of the bankruptcy process. Additionally, Boots & Coots announced that it had paid in full its principal balance and interest outstanding under its Loan Agreement with Checkpoint.
Boots & Coots Chairman Kirk Krist said, "Satisfying the financial obligation with Checkpoint is one more significant step in our financial restructuring initiatives. The Company continues to pursue opportunities to improve our balance sheet and shareholder value. This has been a difficult process and we are appreciative of our shareholders' patience. We remain committed to working in the best interest of our creditors and shareholders
TIME-TRAVELER' BUSTED FOR INSIDER TRADING
Wednesday March 19, 2003
By CHAD KULTGEN
NEW YORK -- Federal investigators have arrested an enigmatic Wall Street wiz on insider-trading charges -- and incredibly, he claims to be a time-traveler from the year 2256!
Sources at the Security and Exchange Commission confirm that 44-year-old Andrew Carlssin offered the bizarre explanation for his uncanny success in the stock market after being led off in handcuffs on January 28.
"We don't believe this guy's story -- he's either a lunatic or a pathological liar," says an SEC insider.
"But the fact is, with an initial investment of only $800, in two weeks' time he had a portfolio valued at over $350 million. Every trade he made capitalized on unexpected business developments, which simply can't be pure luck.
"The only way he could pull it off is with illegal inside information. He's going to sit in a jail cell on Rikers Island until he agrees to give up his sources."
The past year of nose-diving stock prices has left most investors crying in their beer. So when Carlssin made a flurry of 126 high-risk trades and came out the winner every time, it raised the eyebrows of Wall Street watchdogs.
"If a company's stock rose due to a merger or technological breakthrough that was supposed to be secret, Mr. Carlssin somehow knew about it in advance," says the SEC source close to the hush-hush, ongoing investigation.
When investigators hauled Carlssin in for questioning, they got more than they bargained for: A mind-boggling four-hour confession.
Carlssin declared that he had traveled back in time from over 200 years in the future, when it is common knowledge that our era experienced one of the worst stock plunges in history. Yet anyone armed with knowledge of the handful of stocks destined to go through the roof could make a fortune.
"It was just too tempting to resist," Carlssin allegedly said in his videotaped confession. "I had planned to make it look natural, you know, lose a little here and there so it doesn't look too perfect. But I just got caught in the moment."
In a bid for leniency, Carlssin has reportedly offered to divulge "historical facts" such as the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden and a cure for AIDS.
All he wants is to be allowed to return to the future in his "time craft."
However, he refuses to reveal the location of the machine or discuss how it works, supposedly out of fear the technology could "fall into the wrong hands."
Officials are quite confident the "time-traveler's" claims are bogus. Yet the SEC source admits, "No one can find any record of any Andrew Carlssin existing anywhere before December 2002."
Weekly World News will continue to follow this story as it unfolds. Keep watching for further developments.
