Clean Energy Pathways Signs Agreement to Develop $28 Million Solar Power Plant in North Carolina

Clean Energy Pathways, Inc. (Pink Sheets:CPWY), an alternative and renewable energy solutions company, has signed a joint venture agreement with Green Mountain Properties to develop a $28 million solar power plant in Green Mountain, NC. Under the agreement, Green Mountain will provide 40 acres of land for the facility. Clean Energy Pathways will be lead developer, engaging ESA Renewables, LLC as co-developer to provide a turnkey solution to have the project operational within four to six weeks of breaking ground.


Clean Energy Pathways will own the plant, which is expected to generate approximately $5.7 million in revenue for the company within the first year. Company CEO J. Michael Parsons says this is the start of a series of such projects that will be a significant part of the company's future. "This first solar power development is the beginning of a pipeline of such projects we have planned for 2011," said Parsons.

ESA Renewables has an extensive track record of fast-track development and management of solar power projects. Based in Florida, the company has developed over 400 solar power facilities in the last two years. Jeff Burkett, CEO of ESA Renewables, said that the initial Green Mountain development can be completed very quickly. "ESA employs a technique that allows us to build a 4 megawatt solar power facility in fewer than 8 weeks after we have received permits," said Burkett.

JH: Where you have a problem with the batteries in the Volt or Leaf is with power production. They're lower-voltage batteries. They're around 3.2 or 3.3 volts, and they're what are called '10C' batteries. An amp hour-rated battery can kick out 10 amps or charge at 10 amps all day and night without overheating or becoming damaged. At 10 amps of current and 3.2 or 3.3 volts, you're looking at a 33-watt cell. That's a reasonable amount of power, but it's not outrageous.

If you look at a lithium-vanadium phosphate battery, it's a 4.2-volt cell, but the battery itself is a 50C battery. That means the same amp hour-rated battery can kick out 50 amps of current for as long as it lasts. The advantage here is that it's 50 amps of current times 4.2 volts. That's 210 watts of power as opposed to 33 watts.

You've got a lithium-ion battery in both cases, but because of the addition of vanadium to the cathode in that battery, you've got something that can produce more than six times the power. Obviously, power is important and the most important thing in a hybrid car application. It's important in terms of being able to charge the battery more quickly and get the driver back on to the road more quickly. But it's also important to power utilities. A lot of utilities are looking to use lithium batteries as a backup to some of their substations during peak periods. They want a battery that produces power inexpensively. Frankly, lithium-vanadium batteries at six times the power rating of some of their automotive cousins are a very inexpensive method of producing power.

The element[vanadium] occurs naturally in about 65 different minerals and in fossil fuel deposits. It is produced in China and Russia from steel smelter slag; other countries produce it either from the flue dust of heavy oil, or as a byproduct of uranium mining

The Company intends to build its business through the exploration and development of the existing Property; the acquisition, exploration, staking and development of future gold properties and the acquisition of producing gold properties. The Company’s strategy is to diversify its revenue sources by combining the secure and reliable revenue source of producing gold properties with the potential of gold exploration projects. The Company plans to explore and stake new gold properties, acquire development stage gold exploration properties, carry out exploration programs on the acquired properties, and develop any viable gold producing properties it discovers, acquires and is able to pursue, assuming that it is able to raise the requisite financing for such activities.
