Michael Burry Is Long Farmable Land, And Agrees With Paulson On Gold (But Not The Other "Recovery" Themes)
Submitted by Tyler Durden
on 09/07/2010 10:32 -0500
Michael Burry, who needs no introduction, was on Bloomberg TV earlier discussing his latest investment allocation, which no longer focuses on shorting real estate via the cheapest possible instrument, and instead is going long cash assets in the form of farmable land (oddly enough, not multi apartment commercial real estate), small tech, and, yes, gold. “I believe that agriculture land -- productive agricultural land with water on site -- will be very valuable in the future. I’ve put a good amount of money into that.” Burry, just like Zero Hedge, laments the surge in cross-asset correlations, which makes all hedging strategies virtually impossible, and is a primary reason for why so many rational investors have decided to depart from the market: "I’m interested in finding investments that aren’t just simply going to float up and down with the market. The incredible correlation that we’re experiencing -- we’ve been experiencing for a number of years -- is problematic." Lastly, Burry agrees with the Paulson-Greenspan view on gold, but not any of the other Paulson "Recovery" themes we presented in extreme detail over the weekend: "Paulson's big in gold, and that's something that is interesting to me given how I see the world playing out, but other than gold I haven't really bought into any of the other theses." (And no, you still can't eat it, dammit).

Chart of the Day - Nonfarm Payrolls
Today, the Labor Department reported that nonfarm payrolls (jobs) decreased by 54,000 in August -- the third consecutive decline. Today's chart puts the latest data into perspective by comparing job losses following the beginning of the current economic recession (solid red line) to that of the last recession (dashed gold line) and the average recession from 1950-1999 (dashed blue line). As today's chart illustrates, the current job market has suffered losses that are more than triple as much as what occurs at the lows of the average recession/job loss cycle. Also, today's decline in jobs provides further evidence that the current 'economic recovery' remains sluggish at best.

It is designed here, built there, sold here, counterfeited there.
It's a good thing it is not projected for the Gulf, these people living in that area barely get a chance to breathe before another disaster occurs.
Your welcome OS, I think both PCIO and MNJA are sleeper stocks (no pun intended 8^). Legalizing MaryJane has passed before on a local level and there are more and more dispensaries popping up everyday. Once it passes (almost a done deal) on a state level, there is a good chance that these skyrocket (no pun intended here either 8^)...

Vis-a-vis, whose business is it what we do with our money?
Perhaps this will suffice?

US LEI Increases
19 August, 2010
The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the U.S. increased 0.1 percent in July to 109.8, following a 0.3 percent decline in June, and a 0.5 percent increase in May.

“The indicators point to a slow expansion through the end of the year,” says Ken Goldstein, economist at The Conference Board. “With inventory rebuilding moderating, the industrial core of the economy has moved to a slower pace. There appears to be no change in the pace of the service sector. Combined, the result is a weak economy with little forward momentum. However, the good news is that the data do not point to a recession.”
Says Ataman Ozyildirim, economist at The Conference Board: “The economy should continue expanding, albeit slowly. The LEI is growing at its slowest pace since mid-2009 and it has been essentially flat since March. However, the index is still well above pre-recession levels and the CEI remains on a rising trend that began in late 2009. All four coincident indicators have risen over the last six months, with July’s gain in industrial production offsetting the recent weakness in employment.”
The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI) for the U.S. increased 0.2 percent in July to 101.4, following a 0.1 percent decline in June, and a 0.4 percent increase in May. The Conference Board Lagging Economic Index® (LAG) increased 0.4 percent in July to 107.9, following a 0.1 percent increase in June, and a 0.1 percent decline in May.
About The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the U.S. The composite economic indexes are the key elements in an analytic system designed to signal peaks and troughs in the business cycle. The leading, coincident, and lagging economic indexes are essentially composite averages of several individual leading, coincident, or lagging indicators. They are constructed to summarize and reveal common turning point patterns in economic data in a clearer and more convincing manner than any individual component – primarily because they smooth out some of the volatility of individual components.
The ten components of The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® for the U.S. include:
• Average weekly hours, manufacturing
• Average weekly initial claims for unemployment insurance
• Manufacturers’ new orders, consumer goods and materials
• Index of supplier deliveries – vendor performance
• Manufacturers' new orders, nondefense capital goods
• Building permits, new private housing units
• Stock prices, 500 common stocks
• Money supply, M2
• Interest rate spread, 10-year Treasury bonds less federal funds
• Index of consumer expectations
