For those who may remain in the dark or in denial as to my mantra of "any machine readable input," I offer up the following from Scania's post:
Although the present invention applies to any machine-readable code technology, such as but not limited to linear and two-dimensional bar codes, matrix codes, RFID codes, and magnetic stripe codes, the preferred embodiment uses optical imaging of barcodes and the like. Thus, the machine readable code will be referred to herein as a barcode, the messaging systems will be referred to herein as optical messaging systems (OMS), and the messaging interchange system will be referred to herein as an optical messaging interchange (OMI).

Mobile QR Code Coupon Redemptions to Surge
July 2, 2018
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/mobile-qr-code-coupon-redemptions-surge-jonathan-gross
The redemption of mobile QR codes is growing – with its best days yet to come.
According to a study from Juniper Research, the number of QR code coupons redeemed via mobile devices will increase from an estimated 1.3 billion in 2017 to 5.3 billion by 2022. The research found that the use of QR codes to deliver coupons and discount offers will increase substantially, driven by in-built QR functionality on mobile devices with Apple leading the way.
Recent changes by Apple, to include QR code reader functionality as part of the camera application on iPhone devices, led Juniper to revise upwards its mobile coupon forecasts. Juniper forecasts that over 1 billion mobile devices will access coupons through QR codes by 2022.
“Apple’s addition of QR code reading facilities directly addresses a major barrier for use in Western markets. The lack of an in-built reader had been a hindrance, with consumers needing to download a separate QR code scanner app,” said research author Lauren Foye.
Juniper believes retailers are set to take advantage of an increasingly receptive audience for QR codes. For example, Target announced a QR code-based payments system to scan offers directly to their device stored payment cards, which can then be scanned at checkout for instant payment.
The research also found that mobile-enabled loyalty cards will double, with nearly 4 billion cards set to be active by 2022, up from 2 billion in 2017. Growth will be aided by digitalization of offers, alongside newer, innovative technologies being applied by retailers.
Meanwhile, Juniper said chatbots and voice assistants are major driving factors in delivering consumer loyalty, with these programs aiding in delivering recommended offers and incentives, as well as addressing any customer queries. However, teething problems such as misunderstood queries or incorrectly recorded information risks alienating users.
Redemption levels will be highest for web-based chatbot coupons, as Juniper believes these interactions are more likely to stem from scenarios where consumers are actively seeking coupons and offers, therefore more inclined to use them. However, in terms of volume, the chatbot coupons space will be dominated by both messaging and discrete app coupon redemptions, as far more coupons are delivered.

FINALLY! The following is exceedingly significant, IMSO. I have anxiously awaited news of apps which incorporate digital coupons to be automatically and seamlessly applied at checkout:
Walmart boosts Scan & Go self-checkout with mobile coupons
https://www.retaildive.com/ex/mobilecommercedaily/walmart-boosts-scan-go-self-checkout-with-mobile-coupons
EXCERPT:
Walmart continues to ramp up its mobile in-store Scan & Go program by giving users the ability to clip coupons by tapping their smartphones and having the savings automatically applied when they check out.
...and...
The infamous Scanbuy:
dCouponManufacturer’s multi-retailer Mobile Coupon System
http://www.scanlife.com/dCoupon
EXCERPT:
Consumers gain access to mobile coupon savings for neighborhood supermarkets by clicking or scanning QR Codes, URL links or retailer loyalty cards. No app download is required and consumers may redeem all valid coupons simultaneously at checkout.
MY COMMENT:
The industry has been eagerly awaiting this. This enables redemption of digital coupons at Point of Sale without stagnating the checkout lines with individuals hunting for the coupons they stored. As I interpret these articles, these apps will AUTOMATICALLY apply the coupons at checkout!!

An article I posted in 2017 carried a message I was too stubborn to consider at that time.
Had I considered it seriously I would have realized we were still a year away.
This message became somewhat clear this past May and June at which time several new articles confirmed the original, and additional indicators began lining up. While my timing has been far off the mark for years, I now believe all is imminent (merely my personal view of matters, however, this go around I feel extraordinarily Confident).
I will not take time to find and repost the information I refer to. It will simply be distorted and discarded by naysayers. I should also note that I am NOT advising any iHubbers to accumulate shares. I have mentioned the above for those who have demonstrated an interest in my posts over time, and to provide them hope and suggest they HOLD (not accumulate) their shares.
I have also heard rumblings within the ecosystem. While we continue to witness only silence from Neom/NM/YA it remains my opinion we are imminently close to success at this particular juncture. Could I be mistaken..
of course I could. My timing until now has been horrendous. But I remain steadfast.
Again, I will not post the articles I refer to. I will, however, suggest all iHubbers begin searching aggressively for leading indicators. Should you look, they will present themselves...mine did.

Improving Convenience for All, Conduent to Bring Digital, Cashless Payment Options to NJ TRANSIT
Technology upgrades will offer multiple fare payment options for customers
Sep 26, 2018, 06:45 ET
FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Sept. 26, 2018/PRNewswire/ -- Conduent Transportation, a business unit of Conduent Incorporated (NYSE: CNDT), has begun incorporating advances in payment technologies into NJ TRANSIT's fare payment system that will enable customers to "tap and ride" using their mobile devices and other cashless payment methods, such as contactless bank cards.
As part of the project, more than 500 ticket vending machines, 200 platform validators and 65 fare gates will be refreshed to accept payments via mobile phones and contactless bank cards. Conduent will also add 2,500 validators on buses so riders can easily tap on to validate or pay their fare.
Conduent's contract with NJ TRANSIT began earlier this year and will include four phases over a five-year period. The company's travel account system, once upgraded, will securely process all user transactions, deducting fares from riders' account balances, recognizing a monthly plan or directly debiting their payment card, or their PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay account. Customers will also be able to access their transit accounts to view transaction details and manage their travel expenses.
"Advances in telecommunications combined with the rollout of contactless bank cards and mobile wallets allow agencies to offer alternative payment options to their customers," said Mick Slattery, CEO, Conduent Transportation. "The enhancements to NJ TRANSIT's fare payment system will enable the agency to focus on its core mission of transporting people, while we make sure the technology continues to deliver an enhanced rider experience."
Conduent Transportation is a leading provider of public transportation and mobility solutions – including electronic toll collection, parking management, and advanced transit and safety systems – that offer automated, analytics-based and personalized services for government agencies and their constituents. The Launch of Faster Payment System (FPS)
https://www.hkma.gov.hk/eng/key-information/press-releases/2018/20180917-3.shtml
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced the launch of the Faster Payment System (FPS) today.
The FPS is one of the seven initiatives announced by the HKMA in September 2017 for preparing Hong Kong to move into a new era of Smart Banking. The FPS operates on a round-the-clock basis and connects banks and stored-value facility (SVF) operators on the same platform. It enables the public to transfer funds anytime, anywhere, across different banks or SVFs with funds available almost immediately. Fund transfer will become very user-friendly with the use of mobile number or email address as account proxy for the payee. In addition to the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD), the FPS also supports Renminbi (RMB) payments.
Mr Norman Chan, Chief Executive of the HKMA, said, “The FPS is a unique platform as it supports instant payments in the HKD and the RMB with the use of mobile phone numbers, email addresses or QR codes, and achieves full connectivity among banks and SVF accounts. It makes retail fund transfers and payments much quicker and easier. The launch of the FPS signifies the payment system, which forms the core part of the Hong Kong’s financial infrastructure, will enter into a new era. While it will bring new opportunities to the retail payment industry, it will also promote innovation in financial technology, providing greater convenience and new experience to the public.”
Starting from today, the public can make use of the mobile app of participating banks and SVFs to register their mobile phone number or email address with the FPS as an account proxy for receiving funds. And from 30 September, the public can make transfers or receive funds using the FPS. Currently, a total of 21 banks (including most retail banks) and 10 SVFs in Hong Kong have participated in the system to provide FPS services for their customers at launch (see Annex for the list).
Similar to the HKD Clearing House Automated Transfer System (CHATS) and RMB CHATS, the HKD FPS and RMB FPS are subject to the HKMA’s oversight under the Payment Systems and Stored Value Facilities Ordinance (PSSVFO). The PSSVFO also provides statutory backing to the finality of settlement for transactions made through the HKD FPS and RMB FPS by protecting the settlement finality from insolvency laws or any other laws.
In addition, to promote the adoption of QR code (Quick Response code) payments in Hong Kong, the HKMA announced the Common QR Code Standard for Retail Payments in Hong Kong together with the launch of an associated mobile application tool. A free mobile application tool, namely “Hong Kong Common QR Code” (HKQR), is released today, which can be used for converting multiple QR codes from different payment service providers into a single, combined QR code. This would facilitate merchants, especially small and medium enterprises, in using a single QR code to accept different payment schemes, instead of displaying multiple QR codes to their customers. The HKQR mobile application is available for download from Google Play Store and Apple App Store from today.
The public may contact their banks or SVF operators for more details of the FPS service as well as the common QR code. More information of the FPS and the Common QR Code can be found in the website www.hkma.gov.hk/fps.

Tencent and Alibaba’s mobile payment war shows how far China is ahead of the US
The Chinese tech giants are dropping major cash to rise to the top in the country’s mobile payment battle.
The scale: In 2017, $15.4 trillionworth of mobile payments were handled by third-party platforms in China—more than 40 times the amount processed in the US. Alipay, owned by Alibaba, handled nearly 54 percent of those payments, and WeChat Pay, owned by Tencent, processed around 39 percent.
The cost: Holding onto market share cost Ant Financial, an arm of Alibaba, a pretty penny. The discounts and rebates it provided to keep people on Alipay contributed to an uncommon quarterly loss. Despite such efforts, though, WeChat Pay is gaining ground—it’s been cutting more and more into AliPay’s customer base each year.
Why it matters: It’s all about the data. Sure, transaction fees are nice, but market dominance over mobile payments mean companies can amass data on the largest number of people possible. That can then be used to pitch consumers other products, like loans or investment funds.
America is lagging: The US is dragging its feet on mobile payment adoption. Plenty of people’s smartphones have the capability—think Apple and Google Pay—but not many stores or services have gotten with the program. Starbucks stands out as an exception, accounting for around 40 percent of all mobile payments in America.

PayPay Corporation
SoftBank Corp.
Yahoo Japan Corporation
One97 Communications Limited (Paytm)
PayPay Corporation, a joint venture established by SoftBank Corp. (“SoftBank”) and Yahoo Japan Corporation (“Yahoo Japan”), today announced that the company will launch “PayPay” smartphone payment services using barcodes (QR code) in fall 2018. PayPay Corporation will team up with India's largest digital payment company Paytm, a SoftBank Vision Fund portfolio company, to utilize Paytm's technology and expertise in mobile payments.
In Japan, cash (bank notes and coins) is still the mainstream payment methodology, with the current cashless payment ratio remaining at 20%. Consequently, the Japanese government is taking measures to raise the cashless payment ratio to 40% by 2025, with a long-term goal of 80%*1, the highest level globally. To aid these efforts, SoftBank and Yahoo Japan established PayPay Corporation*2 in June 2018 and will launch its user-oriented payments platform in the fall 2018. This will promote the broader use of cashless payment in Japan and provide highly convenient services to both consumers and affiliated stores. Paytm leads the digital payments ecosystem in India and has pioneered the use of Barcode (QR)-based technology, offering seamless mobile payments to over 300 million customers and 8 million merchants.
PayPay Corporation, SoftBank, Yahoo Japan and Paytm will expand the number of users by including the customer base of SoftBank, and “Yahoo! Wallet” which comprises approximately 40 million accounts. They will also deploy the platform using SoftBank's sales know-how, and develop a tailored service offering leveraging Paytm's technology. Their aim is for PayPay to become the top provider of smartphone payment services in terms of the number of users as well as affiliated stores.
With the launch of “PayPay,” Yahoo Japan will terminate “Yahoo! Wallet's” current smartphone settlement function*3 (termination date has not been decided). The “PayPay” platform will be seamlessly integrated with Yahoo! JAPAN ID, giving existing “Yahoo! Wallet” customers the option to use PayPay functions within Yahoo! JAPAN's smartphone application.
Overview of “PayPay”Launch Timing
Fall 2018 (Planned)
Service Use
Cashless payment will be available on either “PayPay” app or “Yahoo! JAPAN” app.
Affiliated Stores Accepting PayPay Payment Services
Over time customers will be able to use the services at a wide range of stores from nationwide chain stores to individual merchants in each region.
Features of Main Functions
Customers can select from two types of payment methods, namely credit cards and electronic money.Provide two methods, namely merchant reading the QR code displayed by the store with the user app and scanning the barcode (one-dimensional barcode, QR code) presented by the user at the cash register.
Business plan for affiliated stores
In the “user-oriented code-reading format”, initial set up costs are low as the merchant only needs to display the code inside the shop. In addition, the service will be free to affiliate stores for the first three years from its launch.Future promotional activities are planned for participating merchants.*1

Simply astounding as to where all of this is progressing:
Internal QR codes could thwart counterfeiting of 3D-printed objects
Ben Coxworth 6 hours ago
https://newatlas.com/qr-codes-3d-printing/55995/
As more and more products are manufactured via 3D printing, the potential for inferior-quality 3D-printed counterfeit versions of those products rises accordingly. With that in mind, scientists have devised a method of ensuring that a printed item is the real thing, by building an "exploded" QR (quick response) code into it.
Developed by scientists at New York University's Tandon School of Engineering, the system instructs manufacturers' 3D printers to include hundreds of tiny elements within objects, as they're being printed. These elements are made up of inert materials, they're located in various layers within the object, and they reportedly don't compromise its structural integrity.
When the inside of that object is imaged using a micro-CT scanner or other device, all of those elements show up at once, creating a two-dimensional pattern. As long as the person operating the scanner knows the correct orientation from which to scan the object (i.e: the correct position of the object relative to the scanner), that pattern will make up a QR code which is distinct to the genuine product and its legitimate manufacturer.
If a counterfeiter were to take a product and try CT-scanning it from various angles in order to obtain its QR code, the elements within would align in various patterns, creating multiple codes – unless the counterfeiter knew the orientation in which the object was supposed to be scanned, they would have no way of knowing which code (if any) was the right one.
"By converting a relatively simple two-dimensional tag into a complex 3D feature comprising hundreds of tiny elements dispersed within the printed component, we are able to create many 'false faces,' which lets us hide the correct QR code from anyone who doesn't know where to look," says associate professor Nikhil Gupta, leader of the study.
The system has so far been successfully tested on items such as cubes, bars and spheres printed from thermoplastics, photopolymers, and metal alloys. It could also be used to create 3D exploded bar codes, or other identifiers.
A paper on the research was recently published in The Journal of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.
